Seemingly trivial reasons why you choose one hotel/airline/shop over another

Not so trivial but for me room rate is the most important when choosing a hotel.

In Thailand the first rule is to ignore any hotel >$100/night. It's money wasted. In fact my preference is $30-$50/night unless family staying with me or it's high season and then I may spend $60-$70/night.

Next week have 8 nights with full breakfast for 2 @ $44/night in a 2-3 star hotel and to end the trip 5 nights @ $27/night in a Superior room in a 2 star hotel.

What threw me out totally was coughet end of this month. Tourism must be in full swing again as room rates are ridiculously expensive. coughet must be one of those places where it's either hostel cheap or resort expensive and not much in between so I did the next best thing.

I've got over 700,000 IHG points so I've lashed out 71,000 IHG points on 5 nights which retail at ~$600.

2 night Patong Holiday Inn Resort
1 night Patong Hotel Indigo
2 night Patong Holiday Inn Express

Not a mattress run but check out the hotels for next time.

Oh yes! I will NEVER stay at another W. We get it, you provide edible undies and condoms in the room, you're so cool!
Too funny 😆 I still love a lot of the Ws I’ve stayed in, though 😎

Forgot about this. I will always choose the hotel/BnB with washing machine as I do not like travelling with dirty clothes.
I’m still getting marketing emails from the (surprisingly affordable) washing+drying+drycleaning service I used in Glasgow 6 years ago! But finding & getting to such a place takes time you don’t always have (or want to spend).

The shower so true

The fix
A decent shelf, a generous towel rack that isn’t right over the toilet, some indirect LEDs lights, neutral-smelling toiletries and simple shower controls. Not hard, surely?

I'd also like to add a shelf to put some toiletries on

Access to a washing machine
I also tend to book accommodation with access to a guest laundry. At least once per week that I'm away. I refuse to use those annoying overpriced hotel dry cleaning services.
Has a power point or USB charger on both sides of the bed - we both have phones to charge!
Close to public transport
Close to non- hotel food options
Access to power points, period, is helpful. Most places seem to either not have any available points, requiring something in the room, like a lamp, to be unplugged or the available points are hidden behind something (like the bed) or far away from where you need the power.
One trip I ended up getting a ~2m US/JP extension cable with in built double adapter so I can get power from the desk in the far corner of the hotel room closer to where I need to use the power. It now sits in my laptop bag with my xx-AU plug adapters.

And importantly for some of us @VPS the shelf for our glasses.
I have to memorise which container is which before I get in !

Oh yes... you remind me. I often forget to travel with a glasses case, so I always appreciate Business Class seats that have a nice secure location for me to put my glasses without risk of them falling or getting crushed.

My favourite is the Qantas 787 bulkhead J seat with the little drawer under the IFE screen.

I liked “Why people pay astonishing prices to lie uncomfortably on massage tables and get poked by strangers while listening to whale song is one of travel’s great mysteries,”

I love a massage but I want to know that the person who is doing it knows what they are doing and they are always so damned expensive on cruise ships or in "spas" except of course the F lounge ;) . The other thing he mentions is strong scented toiletries which is the bane of my life and which is why I have to take my own.

I once read on AFF that some prefer QF lounges over VA because they have spirits*.

(*Alcohol that is, not the supernatural or the pax has a certain attitude/emotions)
