Did qantas just email you say they cancelled? When is the flight? We are booked on SFO-SYD on 18 December and I have called qantas 3 times and they assure me the flight is going ahead

EDIT: Spoke to very helpful HBA agent, got routed MEL-LAX-SFO (was an award booking)

I just now got an email from qantas advising me of the change. No mention of getting from SFO to Lax! What’s an HBA agent?

We are on awards bookings also

Just got the e-mail as well. I have a reward booking so no attempts to get me from SFO-LAX, but unlike many who are understandably not happy with the sudden dump to/from LAX, I am fine with coming back from LAX as I have to position myself in California either way.

However, it has thrown off my schedule a bit, so I called in and asked to change the new LAX-SYD sector to the same flight two days earlier. Fiji immediately made the change in the booking which I can see (looks like they've just opened up J class and put me on it), but whether it actually tickets remains to be seen.

Ticketed within 5 minutes. We'll I'll be [choose your preferred word].

I think we will drive down to lax rather than pay the $850 for a flight since the flight leaves at 10.30 at night!

$850!! 😱

When are you booked? My flight was mid-March. I'd booked my internal positioning flight to SFO using Delta miles so that can be cancelled for free, and had a UA credit I likely wouldn't have used otherwise that will more than cover the new flight to LAX (which isn't obscenely priced this far out).

I got lucky this works out for me; very mindful it does not for most, and QF's behaviour on the SFO route for nearly a year now has been pathetic.

No, definitely a tough one.

Sorry to hear you've been Joyced on this one.

Meanwhile, they charge ahead splashing their upcoming NYC flights and teasing Chicago and Miami as destinations in the pipeline. I mean, fair enough; they're good at that. I just wonder if they intend to operate those? 🙃

My change has come through and booked onto a flight a day later than what I had originally booked, as there isn't 4 x J seats to LAX available on the original booking day, however there is 4 x J seats available on the day before the original booked day, which I will call them about. There appears to be a double daily flight to LAX on Monday's from 31 October, with a 787-9 departing at 9.55pm and the a380 at 11.20am. If I go day before the original book date, I could choose from both flights I suppose, as 4 x J availability on both. Any thoughts on the mid morning flight or night departure?

They said they are rebooking with a partner from LAX-SFO and will confirm.

I think I should call the, and ask about getting from SFO to LAX otherwise we will just driver down there. Because we are using points I think we are restricted.

Maybe some QF execs have visited San Francisco recently, and realised what a sad sorry state the city is in. When I was there in June, until some convention folk started arriving on the night before I was leaving, downtown felt like Melbourne did in the middle of the lockdowns. Although I was there over the weekend and to be fair, outside downtown/Union Square it was much busier and more pleasant.

How bad is San Francisco? We will be there just after Christmas for 3 days. We will be staying at Fisherman’s Wharf.

SFO is great. Just don’t stay Downtown 🤣.

Lots of amazing things to do and see.

Like most big US cities, there’s some major homelessness issues out and about.

also cancelled (dec 1). Dumped in LAX. Award booking. But had this in the email

However, we have reaccommodated you onto a Qantas operated service Sydney to Los Angeles and are in the process of rebooking you from Los Angeles to your final destination, as per your original booking, with a partner airline. We are prioritising these bookings in date order and will send you further communications once this has been actioned.

do not leave anything visible in the car, no matter the value. Asking for your window to be smashed

I was in SFO a few weeks ago. It is not any different to where it was before the pandemic - homeless problem is well known, like many of the major US cities.

It is a destination people want to go to, so it is a shame QF now treats it so poorly. It was the US headquarters up until the 1990s before it was moved to LAX.

Reality is it was making money with three routes before Covid. It would be making a lot of money right now.

Sure could, not enough planes (787 delivery delays) are causing big issues.

As noted, just be sensible with valuables and the like and you'll be fine in most areas. (I say that as man, which I recognise certainly makes it easier for me in dodgy situations especially late in the evenings.)

That said: stay out of the Tenderloin. It has gotten worse over the last few years --- that was already happening pre-Covid as areas around it were gentrifying and concentrating the rough bits into an ever-tighter area, but Covid exacerbated the problem. It's not as if you're doomed to a disaster (I've had to stay there for work a number of times and am here to tell the tale, albeit with some sketchy details), but otherwise there's really no reason to need to be there.

Otherwise, fairly typical large US-city with the accompanying usual issues that - while existent - seem less pronounced in major cities here.
