Sheraton Mirage,Gold Coast

In the last quarter SPG promotion we earnt 3 free resort nights.The only problem was very few places we could use them so decided on a mini break on the Gold Coast.It has been many years since we had stayed here and reviews are not always complimentary but hey the price was right!Now on this occasion there will be no pics-didn't even bring a camera.
Check in.Absolutely no problems.A friendly and informed agent.All Plat benefits explained.Upgraded to an ocean view rooms-the free nights are for standard rooms with no upgrade quaranteed so a good bonus.However on floor 1 it really is an ocean side room as no view of the sea over the dunes.We had one of the larger corner rooms with a large spa bath that easily accommadated the 2 of us.
Now this hotel is about 40 years old and is fairly typical 1970's beach resort style.Would not suit those who like W's-yes Keith thinking of you-why the loss of love for QF?However despite a few cracks and bits lost it was still a very acceptable room.Bed very comfortable-absolutely necessary as 2 days before arriving I decided having a d*cky right knee wasn't enough so decided to try left sided sciatica as well.Not nice!.
Had absolutely no problems.Parking is free.Not a long walk to the car park lift so I had no problems.After walking around Surfers Paradise I certainly think the Mirage's position is way better than the new Hilton.
Thinking of doing a short TR of the Gold Coast as we did have some nice food experiences.

I haven't been to the Mirage for a couple of years - but that line is pretty damning given the hotel was opened in 1987 so is just under 25 years old! Lol

I always found it a bit of a throwback to the Skase era - gold taps and cane furniture. But '70's might be just a bit too harsh

Also haven't been there in a couple years. Last visit was for high tea, and they do that well, even earned some points to keep my SPG account active.

Well there you go.I remember staying when I lived in the Hunter Valley and left there in 1992 so presumed it was a fair bit earlier.
I doubt though there is much difference between 70's and 80's beach decor.But then what would I remember!

I will be interested in your food experiences. We tend to dine around the Broadbeach area,but looking for good places in the northern GC area.

Its about to go into a refurb that will take three years, so I suspect the cane is on its way out!

OK we just had 3 nights here, and I am getting in before Drron does his usual review. As he says I am a lot harsher in reviews than him but we will see.

For check in etc, I stayed in the car, and Ron did all that, so after we had parked and made our way to the " you have been upgraded room " 3010. It was a spa room. Refurbed, but in the dark, you could be anywhere style. Hell we are in QLD - on the coast - whats wrong with a little bit of turquoise ! SO the plantation shutter are gone, our room looked over the road, so the large window needs to be double glazed to block out road noises. Bland beige furniture with brown accents. The room had a smallish flat screen TV mounted on the wall. There was no hotel compendium to tell you where stuff was. Bathroom was unchanged from what I remember. Towels look original - very thin and small, 2nd day we got thicker bath sheets. Room servicing was very hap-hazzard - one day we got water, next day no wine glasses. a pen but No paper to write on !! All small stuff, but it adds up !

This time mrsdrron is being fair.The upgrade was to a Spa studio room which is a one category upgrade.I had put in for suite night upgrades but not granted even though a Garden terrace suite was for sale 5 days out.With SNAs if a suite is available 5 days out it is yours.These suites are the Mirages standard suite.

The suite was still for sale at checkin as were Ocean front rooms which are a higher category than the spa studios.again the SPG promise for plats is best available room at check in so a definite fail.Form letter given to you at checkin.Nothing in room,not even water.So a fail by management.

Mirrors my couple of experiences there ... poor decor and mediocre service. One stay we had at least 4 knocks on the door for the usual (mini bar check, room check, blah blah) before we put on the "do not disturb" sign ... and the knocking continued!

One interesting thing was 2x minis of Baileys out on the table one time when we were upgraded to a suite-like room (after complaining about previous privacy interuptions). Wasn't sure if they were complimentary? We left them alone just in case.

The last two times I was at the Mirage were in October and then again in November and when asked about the upgrade,, they told me that all suites are full. Strangely both the times, the room they gave me happened to be one nextto a suiteand there was no one in there...asked the truthful room service people. I don't mind if an upgrade is not possible due to the property being full...but to come lie without reason is just poor showing. The even more not so funny experience was that they upgraded a non spg member as well to the same type of room that they upgraded me. And I stay at the Mirage at least 7-8 times a year...i should say used to!!!

lying is the most disingenuous behaviour. I simply don't tolerate that. Get the manager down to open the rooms !

actually Avis have been good. Have rented off them recently, every week for a year. There's slovenly girl who looks after me!!
