Should I get an Ipad?

new iPad model out today, called 'new iPad', lol.

I am reading it as just now being called iPad and that new is just the descriptor. If you go to the apple store they refer to iPad mostly in a darker font - I would be interested to see what the packaging looks like to confirm the name.

Yes I think you're right. The order confirmation email from Apple refers to it as "iPad" followed by the specs "with Wi-Fi + 4G...", etc, and then "(3rd generation)" at the end. So I would guess that it's just "iPad" and, really, that's all it needs to be.

Interesting on the Australian site it is listing them as shipping between 16 and 22 March but Oz wasn't listed as a 16 March launch country...

EDIT

Did they change the prices of the iPad 2 during the year - the Oz price for the new iPad is only $899 rather than the $1,049ish I paid last year for a similar model.

We were listed in the keynote as a March 16 launch country.

Ordered the Black 64GB WIFI 4G model after a lot of messing about on the Australian Apple Store site. Very slow.

Thanks - I was following it on macrumors.com and they didnt mention us.

Just ordered mine - might need to have a conversation with mrssimongr...

Marge gets my white iPad2, mum gets Marge's first gen iPad. Lisa gets to be disappointed and use the phrase "Oh man!" repeatedly. I call that "the pecking order tech roll". ;)

Mrssimongr was meant to get iPad 1 when I got iPad 2 - toddlergr seems to have acquired it instead - mostly to watch videos on the apple tv streamed from the external hard drives.

I'm trying to talk myself in to upgrading my iPad2 to the new one.... just can't seem to find a good enough reason to bother.

The price drop for the old iPad is going to hurt some of the other tablet manufacturers, very competitive!

That conversation lasted about 2.5 seconds for me. I can't even begin to justify buying a new iPad....but I went ahead anyway!!!

Pity 4G won't work in Australia as yet.

Current released new iPad will never work in Australia.

There's one caveat to that. When it's released, iFixit will buy it and tear it down. That will enable us geeks to see exactly what radio chipset they're using, and to see if it's just software crippled to not work in the right frequencies here in AU (and other places in the world).

Part of me would like to think Apple are sensible enough to release it now with the foresight to have the product certified by authorities in local areas, and be able to 'flick a switch' via software or carrier update to enable the specific frequencies. Of course, that's logical. The iPhone 4/4S radio chipset actually has pentaband support, including the much maligned 1700mHz frequency range, but Apple have (and never will) enable it on those devices.

So until Apple annoying that a "world" LTE version is on the cards, i'm going to hold off upgrading from the 2. The Retina Display may be amazing, but it's not enough of an upgrade for me to go and drop another grand on (I have to have the 3G/LTE version for work requirements).

I was just looking on the JB Hifi website to see if the iPad2 pricing had dropped already but it is still more for an iPad2 then the published price for the "new"iPad...

*edit* the Apple website has dropped it's prices... might get a 2 after all

Hmmm now I'm thinking....

1/ Get an iPad here in the US and benefit from the exchange rate. (US $690 inc tax).

Or

2/ Hold off till the end of the month, buy it in Australia (AUD $694 inc GST), then claim the TRS back en-route to the AKL lunch ..??..??

Toddlers are the IPads natural enemy, which can come in handy........

Don't know if MatF is around, but some interesting developments with the iPhoto app - seemed like they were importing photos from the DSLRs through the camera connection kit and editing / storing / sharing them through the iPad.

Of course, this remains problematic for us due to the lack of CF (though I guess you could use the USB adapter instead of the SD one) but more importantly the 19MP limit on files iPhoto can deal with. All well and good for everything up to the 7D / D700 but a bit problematic for the 5DII/III and D800. :(

Yes, indeed

- cheers, thanks for the info.

I think I'll have to have a play around with a camera kit - can you transfer RAW files onto it, even if you can't process them? Just to be able to use the ipad as a storage device?

I was hoping for some more connectivity of some kind - I'd ideally like to be able to transfer photos (as RAW files, or even better, RAW/JPG pairs) from my camera to the ipad while travelling, and then be able to back them up to an external HDD/thumbdrives or something, possibly to mail home .... a thunderbolt port would have been nice.

I believe the storage for RAW files is possible (though naturally constrained by available capacity on the iPad, which they didn't bother to increase) but exporting out might be limited to whatever you can spit out to a computer or send over wireless to the Cloud or wherever else.

Not tempted to get a 5DMkIII and simply use the SD slot for a backup card? :p

Hehe, somewhat tempted (though not for the SD card backup ... might be more useful than I thought though!), but I don't think the Minister for Finance and War would approve at the moment.

Besides, the main improvement (to me) seems to be in the AF, and I'm on the verge of ordering one of these, which is manual focus:
Zeiss Distagon T* 21mm f/2.8 ZE Lens for Canon EF 1762-848 B&H

Mrscove ordered 2 new ones on line so our home finances must be in good shape.
