Should I stay or should I go - Hong Kong [protests]

Grrrr. We were due to be in transit in Hong Kong only arriving from Adelaide then on to Europe. Cathay just cancelled our onward flight to Europe and rebooking us on one 18 frigging hours later! Not happy Jan. Do not want to Hong Kong and stay. Qantas trying to change flight from Adelaide. Used the message feature on the Qantas app as requested and it was as useless as a fork to cut steak and told them that.

My PER-HKG day flight was cancelled a couple of days ago & have been rebooked on the midnight departure, at least it's now an A350 instead of A330. Wonder if it's a sign of the protests having an effect on CX or just routine schedule changes.

I looked at CX flights coming into Perth in May 2020 with preferences for the 0550 arrival. EF shows zero availability though the flights are still listed. For me arriving into PER between 1900 and 0500 is useless.....

Trying to be wandering

CX143? From what I can see the that flight ceases at the end of March 2020 & you either have the A350 CX171 which is outside your preferred times or to fly via ADL which is

HKG saga continues. Hopefully its resolved soon & Hopefully CX flight changes are routine

I am at SIN for last 2 days, and will head to HKG tomorrow for 6 days. We have already bought 2 day Disney ticket packages online. Will report back once we have gone to Disneyland.

We have a return flight booked through CX for August. When is your flight scheduled? I’m trying to get a handle on whether the return flight will be likewise impacted. And I think their passenger numbers must be down.

Apologies for the delayed reply, flat out at work.

My PER-HKG is in mid May. I fly out of a few days later, HKG-BCN with CX so I am really hoping that flight is not affected as well!

How dare work get in the way of AFF! 😂
They seem to have cancelled Flights up to August so if it’s sticking now it may be fine.

I’m on my way to HK today. My niece who lives there tells me she has yet to be impacted by protests so not overly concerned!
And currently loving my time here, all good so far. There’s a protest New Years Day but we fly out early so will miss it. Plenty of very cheap hotel deals!!

My time here to date has likewise been issue free. There was supposedly a sit in near my hotel yesterday, but i missed it being out about. I have a lunch date in finance district then an evening flight tomorrow,so am hoping i dont have issues getting to airport.

Any examples? There doesn't appear to be a lot of downwards pressure on prices online.

Langham in Tsimshatsui has been pretty well priced especially via Amex FHR.

Marriott at Ocean Park also under $200 equivalent. Even places like the Sheraton and Renaissance are hovering around the $200-$250 mark.

Thanks @Isochronous - will look into those. I'm not eligible for FHR but will get a card that will fix that in about, oh, 18 months time.

I booked Hilton garden inn for a trip in May, just over AU$400 for 3 nights then a $80 Amex cash back on top

What i found was that prices have only dropped for immediate future. I had luckily booked a fully refundable room 9 months out, but as got to start of December and people started cancelling, hotels that were out of my price range suddenly became affordable, so cancelled my original reservation and upgraded.

I think hotels have held nomal pricing hoping things improve, but when it is clear near term bookings are low, then discount their rooms.

Got airport express train to HKG no issue, no sign of protests and just had toshow boarding pass and passport to enter departures concourse from tHe station. Enjoying preflight drinks in the Qantas Business lounge which is much nicer than the Sydney Qantas International Business Lounge.

Friend i had lunch with who lives in mid levels says he got caught up in the protests only once when he was kicked out of shopping mall, but mostly easy to avoid. I wouldn't be afraid to stop over.

I think that the security issue now seems to have been sorted. But the sequelae - ie Cathay and impact on its scheduling, has kicked in.
