Should I stay or should I go - Hong Kong [protests]

I am also traveling to HK in 4 weeks time for work, really hesitant to book now given the unrest.

The late night CX138 and QF117 from SYD-HKG and CX178 from MEL and CX156 from BNE all seem to be still going

Looks like no departures until 6am tomorrow HKT:
Impacted direct flights to Aus are: CX 111 to SYD, CX 135 to MEL, VA 68 to MEL, QF 128 to SYD, VA 82 to SYD, QF 30 to MEL, QF 98 to BNE, CX 161 to SYD, QF 118 to SYD, CX 101 to SYD, CX 105 to MEL.

Note that as of their recent disbanding from HKIA, the arrangement the protesters had agreed on was to reconvene for much of the same tomorrow. Not sure whether it is just talk at this point and/or whether the police may have a plan to reduce the effectiveness of a repeat event however there are a lot of outbound flights affected.

I just wonder what the protestors have as their goal
And what will happen to resolve this situation. It was inevitable after the handover and took longer than I had predicted to eventuate.

5 goals;
1. The immediate ending of the extradition bill (allows HK citizens critical of China to be extradited to The mainland)
2. The immediate stepping down of the SAR government leadership
3. The government (SAR) must retract their comments about the protests being a violent uprising or riot
4. Must be an independent investigation into the actions of the police
5. Any arrested from the protested must be released and face no charges.

The first is kinda already been agreed to

And only number 1 will happen as it’s already been agreed to. I can’t see China backing down one bit. Currently with No 1 that was a backdown in HK. The rest must be China initiatives.

In 2008 I was on a plane that flew into BKK during its occupation by the yellow shirts.

I was incredibly fortunate to have previously booked a room at the Novatel so had a bed for the night. The AP was occupied for at least a week and Qantas evacuated their pax by putting on buses from downtown Bangkok to coughet. Then flying us to SIN and then home.

It was amazing effort by QF and the lessons learnt there will surely be used in this incident. Although, I wonder where pax could be taken to, to get them home?

I met DFAT officials at BKK AP and they were very happy to hear that my TI had already agreed to cover the extra cost of my extended stay. And they did within a fortnight of me submitting my application.

Having since been fortunate enough to visit QFs Integrated Operations Centre I can only imagine how busy they are now.

I'm not sure the CCP will be very happy about the airport shutdown. It makes it much harder to spin in the state run media when it impacts mainlanders directly. BBC reports that there were 27 million mainlander tourist visits to HK in the first half of 2019 and when you have this sort of thing happening regularly it is going to stir up some discussion domestically that the Chinese govt would rather not deal with.

Also, one inbound flight impacted: Scoot flight turns back to Singapore - Hong Kong-bound flight TR980 is returning to the city state. It took off just past 2pm and was supposed to land in Hong Kong at 6.05pm. The plane is now due to arrive back at Changi Airport in Singapore at 9pm

Well my husband and son are caught up in all this. They were to fly out on QF118 tonight. I spent ages on Qantas and then also eventually SMS chat who kept saying that the flights were going ahead. I kept sending them links of news reports and also the offical notification from Hong Kong airport of the cancellation. They asked me where I got it??
This went on for hours with Qantas. My husband and son still have not been notified anything (by email or SMS) offical from Qantas. Husband and son tried to get on the airport train to the airport from Central they were blocked by the protesters who told them to go to the nearest hotel which was the four seasons. They got the last room! so we will wait and see how this all pans out. But Qantas have not been very proactive so far. I did get a copy of the Qantas chat emailed to my husband. We will wait and see

Can't see 2-5 happening. Only a matter of time b4 China flexes its muscles!

Looks like most inbound flights since 6PM are affected as well. I count 20 that have landed since 6PM, with easily 150 or more inbound flights canceled.

But Qantas have not been very proactive so far.

What exactly are you expecting? Take a look at the scope of the issue right now. No passenger could even make it into the airport to be triaged. It's a little inane to expect an airline to handle this issue at the moment when the protesters are literally threatening to return to the airport immediately if operations resume.

Maybe a notice on their website stating flights are cancelled and what pax should do?

My husband and son have been in Hong Kong since last Tuesday. They have had a wonderful time. Haven't seen any protestors or anything. They fly out late tonight. There was a peaceful sit in at the arrivals hall at the airport on the weekend, but no violence.
My advice to them when they arrived was to speak to the concierge about any no go areas. The concierge said most protests were on the weekend.

My son and husband have been all over Hong Kong with no dramas.

Hope they are ok but must be stressful times. I'm sorry but all the AFFers in this thread who said above they will still go to HK...
