My view of this thread is that it is to discuss whether or not mistake fares, and other sloppy practices by airlines that benefit us should be widely publicised.

Having benefited from some of the things posted here, especially ASAs and combining them with DSC offers thus getting to LTG quickly I can see both sides.

This suggests that maybe a compromise would be a better idea. Something along the lines of Flyertalk's OMNI access where you need a minimum of 180 posts and 180 days membership to gain access.

Noting that Playground posts don't count and that post padding is discouraged and appropriately dealt with by the moderators this would require a concerted effort to attain access. Perhaps the wine threads should also be excluded from post count given they aren't really flying/travel related?

I put this in the too hard basket. And that's before I even started thinking about whether it is right to exploit, let alone tell others about, mistakes that allow you to obtain something for less than its offered cost - even if it is a big company that can look after itself.

In the end though, I'd answer no, given:
a) It's not what this forum is about in my opinion - free exchange of information and experiences,
b) There are avenues to keep things more private if desired,
c) we are not the only place these matters are discussed
d) there's too much grey to easily moderate - eg, DSC vouchers are one person's glitch, but another person's very sensible marketing tool by QF that generates upfront revenue and future bookings
e) it would eliminate a means to give feedback to companies that may be lurking - eg, DSC vouchers many of us have said if these are denied we won't be making use of DSCs in future (80%of my DSC use in the past two years, and 100% of friends/family/colleagues I have directed them to have been vouchers).
f) even though I'm lateish to the party (I have no idea what Brazil or fuel dumps are referring to!) I have benefited greatly from this forum and it is mainly from posts (I don't have time or opportunity to attend many events) so to cut it off now would feel like it was hurting future kermatus.

Anyway, great thread and question OP.

I think that there is not one right answer and that any situation needs to be thought about.

Travel advice, tips, etc should be freely shared and I do. How to do more with less etc. Best use of redemptions...linking Aexes etc.

But there are also travel/point opportunities some of which should be shared but some of which cannot really be.

  • I think that there are generally two types of these opportunities.
    • Those where you are just making the most of the rules as they stand. And you can pretty freely share these as the bell curve comes into play and there often more gain than by the supplier in the status quo even if some can maximise things.
    • But then there are also massive glitches or pricing errors or complete blunders in how things were set-up etc that if may start/started to use will get shut down as they are simply too much pain for the company to bare. In addition in recent times many online deals are reneged upon so that even the starting can miss out.
      • Some of this are a healthy discount rather than a massive error, and in which case IMO can be shared. So for example today's VA opportunity I think would only be shut down, and not reneged upno. So I think sharing that was/would be ok.

It is interesting to note that for the current 'VFF discounted award' thread, it was only eight hours from when the initial post was made to when the lurking VFF rep discovered it.

In this particular case they confirmed that everything was good (which is actually a positive). However, they could of have easily shut it down if it was not.

Even more interesting is the amount of VFF rep posts in the last few years...

I remember when VFF and RedRoo would post regularly. Their insights were invaluable and gave us all a warm fuzzy feeling, usually :)

I do sometimes wish there was a "please don't repeat a loophole in all its detail before you are brave enough to try it (when its already been discussed) " and a "read the thread" button

The 'moderators' have confirmed beyond any doubt (by a recent action) that no censorship of any deals/loopholes etc will be tolerated.

I will embrace this decision by exposing any I come across to the fullest extent....

Not sure why the dummy spit, but in any case preferable in my opinion to the ugliness that went on with the early discovery of the Velocity reward points discount. This wasn't exactly proving the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, but the strutting quickly got to be unbearable and the repeated "Fight Club" references were suggestive of one concussion too many.

And the "This is why we can't have nice things" whining is about as pleasant as the last-refugee-off-the-boat or "cough* off we're full" mentality.

Why try to take ownership of pure fortuitousness? And who cares whether it benefits you, me, my friend, or someone on OzBargain? I thought we were all on the same side...

If you want to keep something to yourself, that's fine too. I know I do from time to time.
