Agree, this doesn't sound quite right. And even if it was, you can't tell me there was no way to put something over the screen (i.e. in the event that a parent wished to prevent their child from watching the screen in front of them).

Yes, but that doesn't mean that the film should have been shown or kept being shown when its content became apparent.

Sarcasm aside, I'd love to know how many passengers spoke up about the unsuitability of the film. Leaving it run for an hour before switching film choice sounds a bit unlikely (unless it took that long for people to decide that the film was too racy for general viewing).

From the report, quoting Qantas, when they realised it was unsuitable (presumably, it took a while for the juicy bits to appear) they tried to neuter the screens that wanted it not shown and failed. So they then turned it off.

Just a mistake, that was attempted to be rectified, couldn't, so turned off. Fair enough.

Not really. The OP article said it was X rated (ie, literal cough). There’s a whopping difference between showing that to children vs an MA film.

Yes, a red herring. Irrespective of classification it contained nudity and obscenities in text. Doesn't matter if its MA or X. Unsuitable for general, unavoidable broadcast.

It does matter. It’s the difference between an apology and a court case.

I’m not defending the act but to treat the two as the same is ridiculous.

Even with working IFE plenty of kids subjected to nudity etc from their neighbours seat / row in front etc. if it’s unsuitable it shouldn’t be loaded in the system.

With respect, where do you draw the line on what should/shouldn't be loaded onto the IFE system? Considering the Australian Classification standards, anything under an R18+ rating is technically fair game for anyone 15 and under (provided there is at least parental supervision).

I think a simple error. I doubt the CC would have any indepth knowdge of the movie's classification. Likely wont happen again as Qantas CSMs would know to check the classification before broadcast moving forward. Or only choose from a "safe" category. The airline can organise the IFE catalog to that end

Do we really need clunky built in IFE?.
Most people have BYO IFE. Forget the olives, there are better ways to save weight

That's kind of my point thought. Wasn't this film given an MA15+ classification? Or did I misunderstand your earlier comment and you were meaning that to R18+ (and beyond) should not be loaded?

No, my comment was in reply to RF - basically if it’s suitable for the IFE, any pax could be watching it and thus any other pax can be exposed to its imagery. I think MA is about right, what you get on FTA.

The point you are not considering in this is that, irrespective of its classification, irrespective that kids might see it by looking between seats etc (and then it becomes a matter for parent's control), in this case it was in everyone's face, without (we are told) it being able to be turned off. That's the difference.

Under proper controls, and choice, as is usual on aircraft, of course it could be loaded into the IFE, as many adult films are. But in this case, again, it was on everyone's screen, in kids' faces, without choice and, by Qantas' acknowledgment, it WAS unsuitable for 'general exhibition'. They tried to stop the general viewing, failed, so they turned it off. No scandal, just a stuff up.

QF doesn’t load adult films and I think you know that.

Your careless wording is my point. Reporting that cough was shown to a flight is completely different than a MA rated film. Just because neither is acceptable doesn’t make them the same.

If the news article said “MA film shown to flight” we wouldn’t even be talking about this.
