Hey Vim

Everywhere is fairly busy during that period, especially places around the track. No harm in making a forward reservation well in advance to get the time/date you want - they may require a deposit or something similar though.

I'm up in Singapore early Oct for a conference and want to get out of the sessions to introduce a few friends to a hawker centre nearby - any recommendations around Marina Bay Sands?
Thanks,
Peter

Real hawker centre or touristy one? Lau Pau Sat is touristy, Old airport rd is real. Taxi to old airport rd, but you'd save the fare in cheaper food, and it will be better!

Thanks appreciate the response - and of course a REAL one. Spent some time up there years ago for work and ate at HCs every day. just awesome cheap food.
Cheers,

Just checking!:)

When the most commonly mentioned centre is Newton and the concierge sends you to lguttons bay when you ask for a real one, I always double check what people actually want.

Tiong Bahru is a good one too, easily accessible by train but I think you'll need to change at Raffles Place. Or catch a taxi, they are nice and cheap in Singas.

A few of my favourites here for entertaining clients on business in Singapore:
Flutes at the Fort
Le Bistro du Sommelier

I also went to a little place called the Bark Cafe for drink last week with a client which is next to the airport, handy if you want to be somewhere close to the aiport, 5 mins by taxi and beer was just the right temperature!

Good options there and thanks to all who responded. Turns out Mrs. pgsdiver now thinks a shopping trip up there will be fun, so we'll be hitting up the KF points later in the year I think.
Regards,
Peter

Well we are back in Singapore and our first lunch was back at Iggys. It has changed a bit.New chef who is Japanese so the food has a Japanese feel. Also the $S85 lunch is now only 3 courses and a choice in main course only-today lamb, waygu and pork. The wines are also dearer. We however had the tasting menu at $S150 with a bottle of Sancerre.
We started with 2 amuse bouche-first Japanese mini prawns with a curry powder. We both enjoyed this-

.

Next I had a sashimi which was on a capsicum, nut and citrus sauce with caviar. As mrsdrron cant eat capsicum she had rice noodle with caviar.

.

Both very nice. Our first course was quail, quail egg veggies and black truffle. We both agreed this was the best dish.cooked in a clear paper-

.

The aroma of the truffle, the moistness and sweetness of the quail ball plus the melt in your mouth mushrooms was great.
The next course was on the $85 menu.Tuna on caramelised garlic onions with mozzarella came out steaming though a cold dish.Very good presentation and lovely tuna-

.

Next a cocotte with Hokkaido scallop and veggies.Really nice.Number 3 dish on our list of likes-
DSC01637.JPG
.

Then the next course also from the smaller lunch menu-spaghettini with Hokkaido crab. There was a lot of crab hiding under the pasta-

.

The main course was wagyu beef with mushrooms and Japanese yam-

Very nice but simple.Next the dessert the runner up on our like list.Just called berry berries.Raspberry icecream with an occasional blueberry, raspberry meringue and a marscapone ball hidden inside of which was a white chocolate ball full of a delicious cherry sauce-

.

With the tasting menu you also get a selection of petit 4s and coffee or tea-

My macaroon was a truffle one-very interesting.Mrsdrron had the orange. We both passed on the wasabi one.
All up $S440.Enjoyed it immensely and both glad we had the tasting menu as it contained our top 3 choices which we would have missed with the cheaper option.

This is the best guide for singapore restaurants and all those photos are so inviting, thanks drone for those updates.

So Monday and we were at Raffles City so decided to try out Salt Tapas and Bar by Luke Mangan.Anyone should know how to get there just from the view from our table-
DSC01654.JPG
.

There is a lunch special of $35 for 2 courses which is your value option. We decided to share dishes. There are some from his main menu at salt, some typical Spanish tapas and a couple of extras. We started with the chicken liver and foie gras parfait with pear chutney and toasted brioche plus his parmesan and truffle fries. Here they are nearly all gone-

.

Then the chorizo sausage, silky mash, green beans and caramelised onion jus-
DSC01656.JPG
.

The beans became peas and the caramelised onion drowned in the mash and chorizo not great though OK.A glass of house white and a cider-

and the bill came to $S110.Would rather go to his Salt restaurant on Orchard rd.

... which I did last year, on your recommendation, during a 6 hour stop-over at SIN on my way to Europe. Dis-embark, through immigration, onto MRT, 2 changes of train, stop at one of the down-town stations, catch 2 lifts straight up to Salt, have sensational dinner with sensational views, then reverse back to departure lounge. :)

Today and it was Les Amis. They have a $55 lunch menu,a $70 version and a $125 Epicurean menu which we both had.It is hidden in a side street of Scott's road in the Shaw Centre. Two floors of dining.Larger than Iggys and much noisier.
So the food.Straight to the first course Oscietra caviar with cold angel hair pasta and sherry vinegar with truffle. This was beautiful and the best dish we had.
DSC01658.JPG
.

Next Pan seared duck foie gras with toasted Japanese sesame seeds,Goma and grapefruit/apple sauce.Definitely inferior to true foie gras and the grapefruit/apple mix didn't really go well plus the sesame seeds did nothing for the dish-
DSC01659.JPG
.

Next was crispy langoustine with a Folichonne side salad.I thought this was the next best dish.
DSC01660.JPG
.

Next pan fried Amadai (Japanese tile fish) with verjus sauce and organic aromatic vegetables. On the $70 menu this has a $S25 surcharge.Unless you are a true lover of tile fish you would be disappointed. It was nice though.
DSC01661.JPG
.

Then the last main.Grilled beef tenderloin from Omi with Aromate, asparagus and a rich jus.Nice steak.
DSC01662.JPG
.

Dessert was strawberries and Sicilian pistachio in a fraisier-
DSC01663.JPG
.

Finished with 2 coffees with small chocolate balls.Plus a bottle of sancerre-
DSC01664.JPG
.

Bill came to $S422 so just $S20 cheaper than Iggys. However Iggys won on the ambience, service and food so personally I will go back to Iggys but not Les Amis. The food at Iggys had more flair and executed well. Here it was much more traditional fare without much excitement.

Continuing the reviews for restaurants in Singapore

Had lunch at Restaurant Andre recently

Apart from the annoying need to put down a deposit, this was a very good lunch.

Will try to post pics soon

Definitely recommended (for lunch at least, can't say about dinner)

Some snacks to start
PCR 7.5

Crisps on the twigs and potato and "mushroom" on garlic chocolate soil

sounds weird but the chocolate garlic soil was interestingly tasty

Whipped mandarin, mangosteen, lychee sorbet, lemon grass granite
