Six million people a year would use train to Melbourne Airport

It seems the direct airport rail was first mentioned in 1999 as an election promise. So you still have a long way to go to catch up with QLD. It was 130 years from the first promise of a rail line until if finally opened.
And the next line they built they forgot staff were needed to run it

The MEL rail corridor was first reserved when the airport opened in 1970. So only 75 years to go! :D

But our Maroochydore line has been suggested since the 1970s and like the line to MEL was promised in the 1999 election campaign. But unlike MEL it was included in the 2022 Federal budget with 1.6 billion set aside. Unfortunately in 2023 minister king put the Sunsine Coast into the same basket as QR and cut the funding. I am confident I will never see it built.

How long did take Perth to get an airport rail line?
Perhaps another thread is better for wandering

Oh the Melbourne Airport line will EVENTUALLY get built. But will it be built to MEL. Maybe AVV gets it. Or they build another airport in the SE ok a rail corridor extension area.

Well The site for MEL was selected because they could get a large land holding suitable for expansion ie third runway.. it is 2741 hectares. A third runway parallel to the east west runway got to the public submission stage but got knocked back because of aircraft noise on nearby suburbs. now a parallel north south runway is being considered.

Much of the original land for two additional runways was sold off.

Careful there @Melburnian1 just know we have a pile of stupids trying to upend lots of successful projects in WA. If that happens the Australian economy will stall.
Bringing back the Victorian economy will need some major rejigging as currently no one considers Victoria to be anything but a basket case.
It now costs us about $90 to get to our city apartment from the Melbourne airport so it would be nice to have a train.

While it's not 24-hour, using a myki you could travel on the 901 route bus and transfer to a train at Broadmeadows. $5.50 for a two-hour ticket or $2.75 if yuo are a senior or child. myki cards cost $6 for adults and $3 for concession holders and can be purchased from the myki machines on the ground floor at Tullamarine Airport.

The downside is being surrounded by Broadmeadows bus commuters
