So... what car do you guys drive when not flying?

Supply and demand and whether dealer is on target re kpi

I was just talking with my son. The price was c. $136K, expected to be available late Feb-early March. He's decided to go with it, figuring that he won't lose out badly in the long run as these things go forever and are classic, and irrespective of whether he decides to keep it for a long time or flick over to a LC300 in a couple of years once they have bedded down.

No chance of any discount under current circumstances. His partner's father owned a very big mining drilling company and has bought a squillion Toyotas over the year, and runs Sahara as his personal wheels. He can't even get a discount through his long-term supplier.

Wow that is full price. Thanks @JohnM
I think I’ll hold on to my non DPF Lc200 a. It longer

had a friend buy a VX (the model down from the sahara. He got it for $95k but that was in May when the dealers were desperate for a sale

I'm certainly glad that I bought my Everest in April when the dealers had laid of staff and the world looked like it was going to end. A handful of weeks later and the place was going nuts. My dealer (a Perth legend and our most prominent multi-brand outfit) stated to the media that he 'had a cricket team' employed just scouring the whole country for used stock.

Might have been him offering me $70k for my LC200 Sahara. Said he would send me the $$$ electronically and clear the funds and the flat bed would turn up to take the vehicle from Sydney
couldn’t go through as I would have to replace its with the new Uber hard to get non discount Lc200

John Hughes?

Easily the best built comfy bush basher = great retained value..even with a tractor drive train and roadholding to match

Still looking for the sports drivetrain with the superb road holding ability with a 3500km tow and 350kg tow ball capacity with the stability during tow to match because the vehicle mass is same or greater than the trailer

I am pretty sure a Toyota Supra or similar can’t do that . Imagine a supra with a 3000kg GVM

It's just horses for courses , have you driven a new American Truck lately, massive fail at a moose test but pretty good everywhere else.
There is a genuine low volume demand for high capacity and comfy towmasters that is being met by the yank tank importers.
Mate is spending a bomb to upgrade the GVM/GCM of his newish Prado which has been disappointing as a tow vehicle.

Shoulda bought a Lc200 and upgrade its GVM.
Problem with the massive American trucks is that the payload is poor for the size of the vehicle and the limitation on a normal car license.
I think a normal car license allows the driver to drive a vehicle no more than 4500kg.
The GVM of the Silverado 2500 is 4490. Just shy of license limit.
The tare is I think 3600.
So payload would be 890kg.

Not a lot for a massive vehicle.

I always think that if you need to change the GVM of a vehicle, you are carrying too much. And additionally you are changing the driving dynamics of the vehicle and making it unsafe. The tow vehicle should always be heavier than the towed trailer be it horse float or caravan.

Well our 2011 X1 had a service - outcome was maintenance / repairs imminently likely were greater than the value of the car, so at 203,xx_ kms, we said goodbye and welcomed one of the last of the Mk 7.5 Golf GTIs to the household. It cert

It’s quite the go-kart by comparison.... and really does”feel’ not dis-similar to the 2008 MkV we used to own.😁

Do they have the “progressive steering”

My R-line 7.5 Tdi (written off - post 28360/page-97 ) had it as part of the “R” package but I didn’t notice much difference compared to the normal steering

The steering is electronic assisted of course but not sure exactly what you mean by progressive - feels fairly direct and roughly same “force” required at low and high speed, perhaps a little more assisted at low speed (of course the setup is presumably to adjust the boost/assist at low speeds when “heavier” without ”power steering”). Have done ~ 750km so far in it so maybe too early to notice any foibles in the steering aspect (and its way more direct than the X1 which had pretty good steering but much smaller wheels/tyres - 225/50 17s vs 19s with a 35 aspect - not sure exact width).

Cars like these - do you sell it to scrap dealers, gumtree or part it out
In this case, traded it in (price negotiated separately after the fact). It needed quite some repairs but was still worth a not insignificant amount (measured in the mid 4 figures) which surprised me. I’d resigned myself to getting “nothing” for it.

Earlier in the year we “disposed” of an old car (2006 Astra) that was stuffed (ran ok but lots of broken bits....) by flogging via a “buymycar” type arrangement. But you’re getting a rock bottom price (but also convenience disposal wise). Was an easy way to get rid of a sub-$1000 car.
