So... what car do you guys drive when not flying?

Went to the EV car show.. quite a few interesting Chinese vehicles coming out next year. Xpeng and zeekr impressed me the most for the quick look I gave them

We are travelling in EU at the moment and so many electric cars, plus all the charging stations. Living in regional Queensland these days not sure if electric works for me, but I do support electric.
Having said that we currently have 3 cars - crazy I know .
2003 Holden Statesman which we have had since new , we use it for a fun drive every couple of weeks, and if we go out with friends we take that as it’s so comfortable and roomy.
2013 Suzuki LX which we use as our shopping cart and beach car
2023 BMW 440i convertible is the fun car.
Living in Bargara we find that parking in Bundaberg is dreadful so we choose to keep the Suzuki , other drivers have no respect for you side panels etc.
However this being a FF forum, currently I am in a Renault Megane wagon for 73 days as we drive around Europe, our cars at home are being looked after by friends and family.
A nephew got lucky with the BMW but he has one of his own and a spare car space at his apartment

Who arranged the lease on the Renault? Where did you collect, happy?
How's the boot for travel luggage? This is my big concern as I'd prefer to be able to get checked bag and cabin size luggage out of sight.

The Megane isn't massive, so similar size boot to the VW Golf really even though the car is a different shape etc.

If you have excess rooftop solar and the car often sits at home during the day - then an EV becomes a very cheap vehicle to operate.

Depends on how you are going to use the car, how many km, long distance driving, etc etc

What about a Toyota Corolla/Camry? - especially the hybrids
Also consider that a lot of EV are priced sharply. I personally would not get a ICE vehicle these days.
EVs are eligible for 100% tax deductibility for private use if self employed, or if employer provides you with an EV

I have a VW Golf TDi that is hitting 300,000km - about to get its third timing belt changed in Jan. Good brand. Even got some $$$$ back after VWGate.

I hear good things about the Corolla Cross too - I have a Lexus UX which is basically a fancy version of the Corolla Cross and its a great car. Not sure if the price difference between the top grade Corolla Cross and the Lexus is worth it but thats a whole other topic....

Was kicking myself last week when I realised that I had left my charger set to charge at full rate 7kW instead of tracking my rooftop solar generation, until I realised that at 25c per kWh for the 8kW that got added, even if I pulled it all from the grid (which it didn't - it was a sunny day but not 7kW worth of sun) it would have cost me all of $2.08 for the whole charge instead of 27c worth of solar FIT.

I've gotten over it.

Ahem ......... VM diesel emissions scandal in Europe .............. surely that takes away from 'good brand' (I assume that's what you were referring to by VWGate)

VWgate or Dieselgate class action sent me over $7k. Apparently the legal theory was I was duped into buying the car based on emission specs (even though Im sure I didn't) and as a result the cehicle I bought had lost value. I don't know how they knew as no one from the lawyers asked me.

In terms of reliability the various VW has been superlative.

Looked at a hybrid recently, given our time of life and value for money, we decided to go with a petrol engine. The comparable hybrids were way more expensive, and yes I'm biased, but I will avoid any communist china produced car, ev or ice, that unfortunately includes Volvo.
I will add that my bias also includes anything made by tesla. Sad? I know, but I have my reasons.
Battery power will improve, I'm sure, but I'm very happy with my decision and I'll live with it.

As for VW's issues, I'm sure all the makers did the same, VW was just silly enough to get caught!

Of course as usual ymmv.

I will add that if we were much younger, or we had grand kids, My view might be very different.

I've had the 140kW troc rline since mid 2021. It's excellent.. love it.

With Audi (part of the same group) if you're buying brand new you can customise and have it built without. Do they not offer that for VW or are you buying straight off the lot?
