My current car is a Prado diesel. Love it. Prior to this I had a BMW for the weekend and Sierra for during the week. In my younger days it was Mazda Rotaries. Also ride a motorbike for pleasure.

I had a go in a Tesla S in California recently. Really nice but the finish isn't great drives like a scalextric car. Ideal in Ca as they have fast charging points etc but I'm not sure if I would have one in Australia. Oh & it's silent (obviously) & I like noise I'm thinking of the Maserati Ghibli which is similar money but I'm waiting to see what the sporty version of the Jag XE looks like. Wish they did a 4 seater F type that is a good looking car

Was looking at a Tesla S today. Very impressive with 17" instrument screen, good looking and surprisingly (for an American car) even shut lines. Just not sure I want to be a trailblazer for this technology in Australia, or can begin to justify the cost

Was looking for a thread on buying a car and found this oldie so pardon me for waking it up.

I'm looking at buying a new car through my company (own small business). Looking at the Kluger/Pathfinder/Territory/CX9 size in a 4WD/AWD. I do a bit of camping but I'm not a bushbasher so I'm not going for a real 4WD at this stage. Price range for these is around $40-60K. Cars have gone up a bit since I last bought one!

There's a lot to consider and for every good review it seems I read a bad one for each of these. When you look at when they (reviewers) test drive a heap of different cars they often pick something based on how it drove on the day rather than things like performance over time and servicing costs etc. I guess that's because they only have the car for a short time. When you look at Product Review you get all the horror stories along with 'booster' reviews. It seems there is no real stand out although some clearly appear better than others.

I'm guessing every opinion will be different here too but at least we're amongst friends here... I think.

Got two teens. Don't really need 7 seats but that appears standard and could come in handy.

Seem to be tossing up Kluger vs Pathfinder so far but open to suggestions. Pathfinder has a better price but is US made and has some sporadic problems which can result in real troubles. Kluger costs more but has better reviews in general. I don't think anyone could convince me to buy a Jeep though. Still you never know.

What do your teens like doing? We used to go camping (not so much now due to work commitments, of not just us parents but also the kids). We used to cart trail bikes, push bikes, chain saw, about 3 different size camp ovens (Lisa and I won the camp oven cooking contest at Casino a few years back) and assorted cough as well needing seating for 5 (semi-comfortably) and tow our van which weights 2.7 tonne and sleeps 7 and comes complete with full annex, queen bed, 2 x double beds, slide out lounge, surround sound, CD stacker, inside and outside speakers, satellite TV, DVD/Blu ray, video, air cond, hot/cold shower, toilet, washer, dryer, dish washer, 3 way fridge, ice maker, white wine fridge and red wine fridge (we don't do camping well).

The vehicle we chose is not 4WD and is a bit odd but suited all our requirements and we've taken it places many won't take their 4WD.

Don't get a pathfinder I had one & it was junk forever getting fixed changed it for a VW Touraeg which was better then a Range Rover sport which was really good but the fuel it used

I would take the Kluger over the Pathfinder. Very happy with my Toyota 4WD (not a Kluger)

I'm driving a Kluger now, no issues other than normal wear and tear, 4 year old and 174K on the clock. I don't bother with Toyota servicing but get my local guy to do it. It's the model before the new one which just came out. The drivers seat could be a bit better though. It has a small fuel tank and I'm forever filling up being only able to get about 550km per tank less around the city. It is annoying, the new model has the same motor and same size fuel tank.

I am thinking of changing it next year for a Territory so I can have a last hurrah with an Aussie built car.

I've been getting by with a Commodore wagon for a few years. I use it for work where I occasionally have to carry a fair bit of stuff around. Have done a lot of country driving and plenty of gravel roads which are okay but the clearance is not good enough for anything but the better roads. I don't think the clearance of these SUV type vehicles is all that great at around 150-180mm but it's a lot better than a car. Camping has tended to be in the more accessible areas but I'm keen to get out onto a few more fire trails but I don't expect to do major river crossings and climb over boulders etc.

By the time you get to some of the higher spec versions of these 7 seater SUVs the price is approaching the Prado which I sort of consider except it's a bit of a truck like most real 4WDs.

I've got a good deal on a Pathfinder but I'm a bit nervous about them although the newer versions are supposedly better. It's all so confusing...

Currently Driving a less than 12 month old Captiva 7 LX Diesel and would not recommend it due to poor Fuel Consumption.

Now if SWMBO allows it I will be changing it very shortly and Fuel Consumption will not be a consideration as looking at the SS-V Redline ... Yes yes a boys toy

Had the Territory Titanium and was very pleased with it. Had the petrol version would have liked to have tried the Diesel version.

I love my 2014 subaru forester 2.0d-s.
Get great fuel economy at 5.6-6.4l/100 on the diesel. Where I am diesel and petrol are very similar in price and it's fantastic.

Has all the wiz bangs and is comfy throughout for a leather car.

Foresters have plenty of fans but they just look a little low slung and car-like to me. Mind you I had a Subaru Brumby for work years ago that may have coloured my opinion.

What kind of economy? I drive ssv ute. 500km mainly stop start and about $85 to fill.

Up until July this year, I had the coughtiva 7 petrol and hated every minute of it. Long story short, my boss wouldn't extend my car budget to a Mazda CX-7 when my previous lease was up 3 years ago and Ford had just released the new model Territory's which were above budget as well, the Territory being end of lease car I had. Um, I probably could have got base models in both, but I like extra comforts, so got the coughtiva with sunroof & sidesteps, etc. The lag on this car was horrendous!

In July this year, the boss upgraded his CX9 Luxury and was going to use the old one as a trade in. I suggested trading in the coughtiva instead of the Mazda, which he finally agreed to. I love the CX9. Feels like I'm driving in business class now . I have to keep the CX9 for an extra year, whereas if I'd kept the coughtiva, I would get a new car next year, but I love it!
