So... what car do you guys drive when not flying?

Sounds like some driver training might be a good investment.

When my son got his licence, I put him into a new RAV4. It had airbags, stability control, etc. I've never understood the logic of putting your kids in vehicles without decent safety features.

12 years later, he's still driving it.

That's why she drives the Benz and I drove a Ford wagon!

You offering......

One day my Ford mkIII 2.8i Capri and my Escort Cosworth road car and Escort Cosworth rally car will also be up and running, maybe when there is a blue moon, the next one that it is.......

I just have to find someone in Canberra I can trust, I've been stung too many times..

Have you tried Bates down our end of town in Hume. I don't know what they are like though, but I suppose they could be a bit Toyota oriented.

You must have just about the only Escort Cosworth in Australia, does that explain your AFF handle?.

And wasn't that 2.8 Capri the last hurrah for the Capri. Had a Cologne V6 replacing the Essex 3.0L.? Seem to remember Bodie driving one in "The Professionals "

I’m not sure if I have mentioned my old MGB. But any day now it will be up and running again.

A friend of mine had one of these. He claimed he never had to change the oil as it had a constant replenishment system. Every week he'd top up the oil level to replace the stuff that had leaked out of the bottom!

There are quite a few Escort Cosworths here, all private or low volume imports. You are correct about the Capri, the 3 litre Essex wouldn't meet European emmissions, so they put a 2.8 engine in it with Bosch fuel injection, K-Jetronic.

A few photos of some of my stuff, my car, well shell really down in Tassie, rear end modified to take McPherson struts suspension.

My shell up here in Canberra, brand new motorsport shell, probably the last new one left in the world. Plus my black YBT which has since been sold and now resides in Brisvegas. Plus you can see one of my other hobbies on the back wall!

Yes, I know them well, the workshop manager told me about 10 years ago not to bring any of mine there as the guys hated working on the Cossies.
They had some very bad experiences with an Escort Cosworth a few years ago. You may have seen this one, it's a very dark green and is owned by an optometrist that works in Gamera Place and Woden, had squillions spent on it.

In the 70-80's my father worked for Ford in the U.K. He'd often visit Averly in Essex where Ford had its "Advanced Vehicle Operations" strengthening the standard body shells and assembling the high performance RS 1600, Mexico, and alike. I seem to remember him telling me about the works rally cars too, but that might have been in nearby Boreham.

Growing up in the U.K. My hero car was the Chrysler/ Talbot Sunbeam Lotus. They somehow managed to shoehorn a 2.2 L Lotus engine into its very ordinary looking hatchback shell. Coupled to a ZF gearbox it was a real wolf in sheeps clothing.
Roll on 20 years and I was reminiscing to a work colleague about this and he stunned me by telling stories of one he owned. He seemed to think that was the only one in Australia.

Great times for Ford, Boreham was where they ran the rally cars from before that part was outsourced, it was an old WWII airfield complete with it's own test track, rally stage. All gone now I think, replaced by houses.
AVO did a lot of work on the 'RS' type cars, Ford have a fabulous Heritage Museum near Dagenham, but unfortunately not open the the public.

At the end of last year I did visit the British Motor Museum at the Jaguar factory in Gaydon, very highly recommended if you get the chance and are interested.

Quite possibly is, I'm guessing there would be a few in NZ as their import rules weren't as restrictive as ours. I'd love one of those, as well as a Vauxhall Chevette and a TR7/v8 and an Opel Manta and a.............................

Thanks for the British Motor Museum tip. I'm currently in the U.K. so a visit is now very likely !. Yes Boreham is now closed, but bits of the airfield must remain as the Essex Police run their helicopters from there.

My father worked at the head office of Ford of Europe in Warley. Ford had a massive presence in Essex, beside Dagenham they had a huge R&D complex in Dunton, (with its own proving ground), and a Tractor factory in Basildon. There were also factories in Liverpool (Hailwood now owned by JLR and assembling Land Rovers), Southampton (Transit vans) Belfast ( carburettors) and Wales (engines). And that was just their UK operations.
They had factories in Belgium, Cologne, Bordeaux ( automatic gearboxes) and Valencia. At one stage Ford had the worlds largest private aircraft fleet of BAC 111 ferrying staff between the various sites with interiors in business jet configurations.
