So... what car do you guys drive when not flying?

I have a neighbour who was a mechanic for an Australian F1 driver in his youth. He’s in his late 70s now, but has a wonderful collection of cars in his garage.

Had a look at another brand of cars yesterday. For some obscure reason, their styling seems to incorporate a pair of enlarged nostrils. They had good seats. No spare, or anywhere to put one. And they’re the only local dealer that I’ve seen who only has RRP, exclusive of all of the on road costs on their prices. So, add at least 10-20%. Cheeky.

I’ve worked out the perfect vehicle though:
Telsa 3 drive train
Golf diesel range
RRS towing ability
BMW seats
Audi panel gaps
Audi RS3 sound
Hyundai price
And a real spare tyre

With that list you could build a new Airbus A390.
Meanwhile I have acquired a Lexus 600HL as a family extra car. It came with a thimble of fuel and it took more than 75 litres of fuel to give it a range of 820 kms. I never run fuel so low just in case there is a bit of dirt in the bottom of the petrol tank.Second key was dead so Battery World fixed that little issue for $8.
Very smooth to drive so I am happy to have it.

sigh . first world problems abound.
Every time I drive my black seated VW with it's faux spare tire… I smile…...

Still no new car... yet. Apparently ducks are in a row, just waiting for insurance to pay Mazda and then new car will be delivered. I poked them today cause I had to call to extend the hire car again. But turns out we have to swap hire cars tomorrow morning since the one we have has to go in for maintenance.

We've got the exact same car coming to us, except in red. (I forget if I mentioned that earlier or not).

Well, I took the step and quit me job for greener pastures. Or maybe it’s just grass. Anyway... gotta go buy a car after three years of driving a company one.

thinking a CX5 or a Tucson. Anyone got any experience?

DF is a mechanic, so I’m very limited to what I’m allowed to buy (if I want to keep getting free servicing 😏)

Neither vehicle is available yet, but the new Defender 90 sounds interesting, as does the Mercedes GLB.

Looking is very cheap.

smashed into by a L player who was unsupervised and not displaying L plates.

smash repairer says eyeball in excess of $20k. The B pillar is a dent and it’s a structural pillar so will need to be cut out and another piece engineered in. Will require the dash to be removed, the sunroof to becremoved and the roof trim and right side interior trim to be removed.
I’m hoping a write off because the VIN stickers and regulatory stickers - tyre placard etc are on that B pillar. Tampering with it - removing and sticking it back on is clear evidence that part of the car has been repaired, and will immediately devalue the car.

If its a write off, I cant replace it with another Golf diesel. They dont make them anymore for Australi

Was thinking of just getting a Camry Hybrid but there is a long lead time due to popularity.

there is nothing that replaces the Golf diesel

Holy moly! Glad you're okay. And I hope that despite their silliness at driving unsupervised and without their plates displayed, that the L plater is okay too. Good luck sorting it out.

L plater is Ok. He will get a visit from cops though. Mandatory 3 month suspension and fine

Not his car apparently so there will be an issue with the owner and whether their insurance will cover an unsupervised L plater
My NRMA comprehensive car insurance policy has a general exclusion :
"we dont provide cover if the driver of your vehicle:... was a learner driver who was not accompanied bya licensed driver that held a urrent licence that was valid for that vehicle:

Essentially my claim on NRMA will be a "not at fault claim" but they will have to chase the driver and owner for the money.
This makes it all the more difficult for NRMA to call mine a writeoff.

Note to NSW drivers involved in an accident
Be careful with the Digital car licenses stored on mobile phones when exchanging details. The address of the license holder is below the screen - access by scrolling up. You have to take 2 photos of the digital license to capture the address.

I’m in the market to replace my MY15 Merc C250. I’ve pretty much decided on the new BMW 330 M Sport, but just biding my time as I predict the new car market will turn decidedly worse in the next 3-12 months with the economic and financial consequences of COVID19.

Just today Genesis released images of the new G80 which caught my attention. 2021 Genesis G80 revealed: Australian debut later this year | CarAdvice

Resale/depreciation aside, that is one fine looking car inside and out. Keen to see one in the flesh when they arrive. The V6 option would be sweet.

I showed the photo and your description to my son who is a smash repairer. He thinks probably a good chance of a write-off.

When do expect to get the final assessment?
