I didn't mind the Tiguan I hired once - full of features and comfy. I had a T-Roc recently for a few weeks in Italy and disliked it, mainly because of the cruise control issues. I don't really drive to 'challenge' the vehicle or me or the road, but I wouldn't own a VW on principle.

True, of most... but I'd still much rather something like a Camry or Liberty, than the Tig. At least the controls and instruments are all the same, so there's no familiarisation aspect to deal with! On day 17, now, and I'm also getting better at waiting for a muuuu-u-u-ch wider gap when entering or turning across traffic

Interested to know more, I had a T-Roc recently in the Balkans and it just kept randomly slamming on the brakes when I was using cruise control when there was clearly no vehicle in front. Dangerous.

I think the issue with the bog spec Tiguan (noting by comparison we have at home a GTI and a Touareg) - as assessed on a 11 day rental in FNQ earlier this year - is the (relative) lag whilst the turbo spools up on what is a fairly small volume motor - so no low down torque. This is done for fuel economy, at the expense of performance. I also found it took a while to spool up And had to “adjust”.


In other words, you need to drive it like a rental car……

It took me a while to figure out that it has an auto speed change thing that was responding to different speed limits on other roads including the 50 or 80km/hr off ramps and side roads. Not nice when belting along at 130km/hr! Could not figure out how to turn it off so stopped using the cruise control. Feel very fortunate we weren't rear-ended, given that tailgating is par for the course over there.

Sounds like this issue, linked below, which I’ve heard of through VW forums, but thankfully never experienced in the couple of cars I’ve owned (both with the full assistance package on them).

I did turn off a number of ‘assists’ that I didn’t like taking control, like lane guidance, but front assist is still on and seems to work well… except (and it’s an issue for many/most makes & models with this feature) for when I’m nearing a bend from a straight road, and there are cars waiting at the bend to turn off. Invariably the car thinks I’m about to plow into them, rather than take the curve, but as I’m aware it does this, I either move to the left lane, or slow down enough that it won’t freak out. It’s not actually applied the brakes on me, it just blasts a big warning tone.

Fortunately it mainly happened once we were in Montenegro, where the speed limit most of the time was 40 (hence using it - PITA to do yourself as it is so slow!); so not a major impact but still a shock every time it happened and gave the car a jolt (and screeching tyres a few times as it forced the brakes).

The nearby roads had to be fairly close though, for the cruise control to react. Sometimes it went the other way too, ie sped the car up and lurched forward. My car (a 320i wagon) has active cruise control which confuses cars in turning lanes/off ramps with ones it should avoid. It can brake unexpectedly but never a sudden large decrease in speed or jolt though. Sounds similar.
