So... what car do you guys drive when not flying?

Just have to consider whether I should get my first EV or not, no solar panels so charged from mains
The Tesla electricity usage (Model Y long range) averages 14.5kWh/100km

If your overnight electricity tariff is 25c/kWh, 100km = $3.60
This equates to about 2L petrol/100km

If you drive 15000/year the electricity cost is $540.

There are also electricity tariffs which are EV charging friendly and has a super low overnight tariff. Some are 8c/kWh but they get it back by putting up the other parts of the tariffs.

Solar is not necessary to own an EV and in fact may actually cost depending on when most of your electricity of consumed as the feed in tariff these days is minuscule.

Tesla car owners have described "phantom braking". The incidence has significantly reduced with OTA software upgrades

An RUC is a great idea. All vehicles should contribute to roads capital works and maintenance. Just do it on a per km basis. The pink slip records the odometer - easy. For the new cars with 5 year exemption - just a declaration is all that is needed
Why should new cars get a 5yr exemption? That is elitist with people eligible for taxation benefits on their vehicle never paying road tax if the turn their car over every few years. Just absurd.

Tax should be based on annual mileage, not fossil fuels or electrons. With double cost for US tanks.

Reality is that the generic US "tank", is lighter than an ev.
Engineering says that weight is the primary driver of road wear so ev's as a genera should pay more than an ice...

Never had a car that did this until my most recent. Coming up to an intersection with a car turning left so I proceed to accelerate as I am quite capable of judgeing the situation. Suddenly the brakes jam up leaving my car at a dead stop in the middle of the intersection with no control for a couple of seconds, enough to get me killed had something untoward happened. Meanwhile said car ahead is 80-100m up the side road. I turn it off now.
Had similar experience, usually happens when car in front has almost but not completely completed its turn. So that car appears to be almost stopped wrt its apparent speed in the same direction as you, which is not its actual speed.

I suspect software not developed enough, and also to know that I have assessed and have the option to simply change lanes if needed. But at least it reassesses and releases brakes when front car clears.

Suppose someone somewhere considers it saves more lives than it kills. Too bad if you're on the wrong side of the equation.

I’ve heard this many times but I compare between the actual vehicles we have/had and were considering, as an example my Prado was 2595kg and my EV9 is 2648… not a massive difference I would say especially as the Prado would have another 150 liters of diesel in it. When comparing the beemer we were looking at to my wife’s EV6 she ended up getting it is actually 400kg lighter.
A friend did the same comparison when getting a Tesla model 3 comparing the weight with a bmw 3 series, it is again nearly the same.
Now looking at all the Dodge Rams, F250’s and Silverados that are driving around my area with a weight of 3+ tons…

I like the look of the Arteon but can't/won't buy VW due to their emissions debacle.
A truly beautiful car. The kind that you have a tendency to look back at after you’ve parked it*.

VW have paid their penalties, and then some; go for it!

Cheers,
Matt.

* At least, that’s what I tend to do with my own Arteon! 😎
