From a report in today's Oz:

DoSomething Foundation managing director Jon Dee, who spearheaded the push to reintroduce dietary specific meals to economy passengers, said it now appeared Qantas was doing all vegetarian fare on an increasing number of flights.

He said the lack of choice was disappointing for passengers who expected more from the Flying Kangaroo, especially when airfares were so expensive.

“Qantas used to be great with their food, ensuring all types of dietary needs were met,” Mr Dee said. “That customer care is totally out of the window these days. The cuts in services are one of the reasons why they make so much money.”

and (my bolding of the quote of the year)

Mr Dee said Qantas needed to improve its current food offering or “give up the pretence that they’re a premium airline”.

At the moment, the Qantas food offerings are below the standard you’d expect from a 1930s budget biplane operation,” he said.

“It appears they’ve become a low-quality budget airline where profit trumps customer satisfaction and service.”

No kidding?

Ummm… I’m siding with QF on this one. The lower the denominator the more dietary needs are accommodated! I’m very happy with QF’s vegetarian options. (Although on my flight the other day the chicken panini was delicious! I ended up with three of them as around half the pax declined to eat. Their loss!)

I don't understand . . . the person who wanted more vegetarian options is now complaining that . . . there are too many vegetarian options? (Asking as a vegetarian myself)

Yes - may indicate that Qantas has gone a bit far. But as we know, beans are cheaper than mince.

Do they give an option on QF whY?
They do! On my last couple of flights they had a panini or pie with meat, and zucchini fritters for vegetarian. All contained lots of sugar, salt and fat… and were delicious!

I think the problem with the guy complaining is that he’s talking about dietary ‘needs’ when in fact he’s talking about dietary ‘wants’. Two different things.

I have a gluten allergy that is rarely catered for in Y, no choice, no big deal, move on. Take my own if needed.

Good-o!! Better than my last couple of trips on QF J, where they had run out of the choices by row 2 (of 3) :)

A few years ago, in domestic Y, you could have chosen an option that catered for your allergy in ‘Manage my booking’…. fares were a lot cheaper than they are now.

Sounds like you must be the dominate character in Qantas’ focus groups… happy to pay more for less. :D

Haha, helps that work pays. Though a recent EK flight in Y to UK and return and the gf food was disgusting/inedible. At least I had the F lounge in Dubai to soften that blow.

Lol yes fair point on the quality, i’ve never actually chosen the option … just remembered it was there.

You do mean that veggie meals emit less CO2 in production. When an animal eats a veggie meal much more CO2 is produced. The animals that emit most CO2 are all vegetarian.
