South Africa on the Cheap(ish)

This surprised me as I had checked the OneWorld lounge finder and that only shows lounges in the international terminal so I assumed no lounges for domestic flights in South Africa. Excellent, I get lounge access included with my $70 flight!

I went through the same process for the JNB-DUR-JNB flights and booked the flights. I selected the same seats as the CPT flight and printed the itinerary. The SLOW Lounge invitation was there for the JNB departure but not for DUR. I assumed that there is no SLOW Lounge at DUR but thanks to Cool Cat Phil’s post above, I now know that there is. Sweet.

I nearly forgot the points and SC earn. Crediting this to Qantas will earn 275 points and 15 SC for JNB-CPT and 100 points and 10 SC each way for JNB-DUR. That will be a total earn for all flights on this trip of 475 QFF points and 35 SC each. That’s not the worst SC earn at ~$5 per SC.

The price I got lasted only one day, so I’m glad I jumped in quick. I am very happy with the deal I got. It wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for google flight alerts, so I highly recommend using them in this type of situation.

Here is a link for information about the SLOW lounges:

SLOW

You did very well with your internal airfares. I know I paid a lot more when I traveled in South Africa.

I just changed the return flights that I booked in December.

I had booked SQ J awards CPT-JNB-SIN-ADL. The original cost was 123,250 KF miles plus ZAR9,970 (~A$1000 at the time) for two pax.

The flight times for CPT-JNB-SIN on the A350 are excellent, departing CPT at 10:40 and arriving at SIN at 06:10 the next morning. I have a significant preference for daytime flights and these flights allow for quite a few hours enjoying the SQ J service and then about six hours of alcohol assisted sleep before arrival at SIN. Unfortunately, the only SIN-ADL flight departs at 23:10 which means an 18 hour layover. I was on this flight in February after a nine hour layover and didn’t enjoy it at all. It is an A330 with 2-2-2 seating with only supper service. Anyway, I was happy to find availability for the date I required so I booked it.

On 3 April AusBT published an article about SQ207 SIN-MEL becoming an A350 service. It departs SIN at 07:45 so that got me thinking. If I changed the SIN-ADL to SIN-MEL we would have a 90 minute layover and a nice daytime flight in J on the A350. With the recent KF changes, and only 19,000 miles available, I didn’t think I’d have much chance of making it work but checked it out for fun anyway.

CPT-JNB-SIN-MEL using SQ207 was only available for waitlisting but it showed me that this flight combination was possible (MCT etc.) and also that I would need an extra 32,750 KF miles and that the new taxes were ZAR1465 (~A$140), so A$860 less cash.

I then had a look to see if just SQ207 was available on the date required and I was surprised to see that it was. What surprised me even more was that it was available as a J saver award (58,000 miles) but could only be waitlisted as a standard award (90,000 miles). If anyone can explain why a saver award is available but a standard award can only be waitlisted, I’d be very interested. Here’s a pic of what I mean:

SQSaver.JPG

Getting on SQ207 wasn’t looking promising but I decided to persevere as I enjoy a challenge. Even if I could change the SQ flight, we still needed to get from MEL to ADL. SQ207 is due to arrive at MEL at 17:10 and the last QF MEL-ADL flight of the day departs at 20:35. Three hours between flights would be my absolute minimum on separate PNRs so this was still a possibility.

I have some spare BA Avios, and a J award MEL-ADL on QF is one of the BA award sweet spots at only 9000 Avios and A$21 per pax. Two seats were available!

This was still a slim possibility so I decided to call SQ and see what happened. My problems at this point were that there was only waitlist available for the route as booked, although the segment I wanted was available, and I only had 26,000 VFF points which could be instantly converted to 19,000 KF miles, 14,000 less than I needed. I had read that I might be able to buy the extra points at the time of booking but I wasn't sure.

I spoke to a very professional CSA and explained that I wanted to change the final segment to SQ207 SIN-MEL. He had a look and said it was available and then explained that the KF award costs had changed since I had booked, and that he would have to re-price it at the current rates. I explained that I was 14,000 points short, but I had heard that I could buy the extra points. He said yes, that was fine for US$40 per 1000 points. He then waited while I transferred my VFF points to KF.

The CSA explained that I would have to pay US$560 (A$745) for the new points and US$20 per pax re-issue fee now, and that I would get a refund for the money already paid (A$1000), less the new taxes (A$140). I said “that’s fine”, he took my credit card details and said that it would be ticketed in three days.

I then booked the MEL-ADL flights using Avios.

The SQ flights have now been ticketed. I managed to get my preferred seats 11A and 12A as the cabin was wide open. Sweet!

The total cost to make the change was 26,000 VFF points and 18,000 Avios. I will end up ~A$150 ahead cash-wise. For this I get a short layover at SIN and a nice A350 daytime flight to MEL, followed by QF J to ADL, instead of an 18 hour layover and overnight A330. If all goes to plan we get home 10 hours earlier at 10pm and straight to bed.

If it all goes to cough we’ll be stuck in MEL overnight and I’ll have to buy last minute tickets to ADL for the next day. SQ207 was diverted to SYD a couple of days ago which would have caused a misconnect. If JNB-SIN is delayed by more than an hour that will stuff us up too. The risk doesn’t bother me, I’ll deal with it if it happens.

It’s a shame I didn’t have the extra KF points available and had to buy them. I would have been very happy to make the change for 32,750 KF points and get around $800 back.

7 Night Kruger Safari

To do this the "cheapskate way" there is no need to go on safari.

Kruger is very easy to do by just hiring a rental car and staying in the National Park Camps. They have selection of various huts at great prices. https://www.sanparks.org/parks/kruger/tourism/availability.php Renting cars is also very cheap in South Africa.

The camps are well set up. You can buy meals at the cafes/restaurants at most camps ( It does vary by the size of each camp though in terms of options and quality) or self catering including bbq's.

Depending on your time (and you have 7 nights you can stay at several camps as Kruger is a massive park.

I would in particular recommend the Lower Sabie Rest Camp. Good views of the river from the camp, and gamespotting nearby is excellent. The camp is of good start with quite a good restaurant.

Olifants
is visually stunning as it is set high on a cliff and so the views are amazing. The animal spotting neraby is not as prolific and as varied as at Lower Sabie though. However the plains just south of it do tend to very good for spotting a range of big cats.

With most of the SANParks there are short safari and walking trips each morning and afternoon, and some at night too provided by the rangers at low cost. Mix this in with game-spotting from your rental car for a great trip. Going on the short drives with the rangers provides you with good knowledge of what and how to spot and on the wildlife that you are seeing. Having your own car provides the freedom to concentrate on aspects that you like most. From birdspotting to the big cats.

On my trip I had a 4WD driving from Nairobi to Victoria Falls overland through numerous game parks and while that was amazing, doing it on the cheap in Kruger in a rental car was equally as good.

If anyone can explain why a saver award is available but a standard award can only be waitlisted, I’d be very interested.

Capacity control and married segments.

SIN-MEL will be a connecting flight from many different ports. If you search from London to Melbourne on 23 May saver awards in business class are sold out, but standard awards are available. This includes the 0745 and 1045 connecting departures from SIN-MEL on the 24th of May.

The standard award is available on waitlist when searching the individual sector (as you saw), but can be confirmed instantly if booking all the way from London.

SQ does this to maximise the price it can get for the LON-MEL itinerary.

Unfortunately I have quite limited mobility now so I arranged this trip because I found a tour company that specialises in safaris for the disabled. I agree that it's not particularly cheapskate but I hope it turns out to be good value.

I may have to stop calling myself a cheapskate, although the trip after this one is first class to London on points and staying for free at my aunties place for two weeks ;).

Only saw Antartica once flying SYD - JNB but it was well worth it. I got some awesome pics. However not always possible to see, sometimes flight path is a bit off for visibility and other times depending on seating, you cant get to the window in J, or they have the blinds down as even though daylight they make it night. So peeking is limited somewhat, though I believe if you ask the FA to tell you when its visible they will. But not guaranteed if that makes you feel better for choosing J over possible views.

I like to keep things as flexible as possible when making travel bookings so that I can make changes as cheaply as possible. The international flights would be on points so that’s about as flexible as it gets. I could see online that there was good availability for both the Rhino River Lodge and the safari so I decided to try to book the international flights first.

The safari I wanted runs once each month and the dates are available online which made it easy to work out the best dates for the flights.

I have a strong preference for day flights so that I can maximise my enjoyment of the business class service. Did I mention that I wanted to use my points on business class flights?

My plan was to transfer Velocity points to KrisFlyer and then fly one way on SQ. In the other direction I planned to use QFF points. Another consideration was a visit to the QF SYD F Lounge. I’ve also read many AFF trip reports about QF63 often flying over Antarctica so that pretty much meant flying QF on the outbound leg and SQ on the inbound. This also means that all international flights would be during the day except SIN-ADL.

I could see that SQ was wide open for two seats in J on CPT-JNB-SIN-ADL but QF had no J availability at all. Oh dear!

We currently have seats 1A & 2A on the non-refurb 747 and I'm really hoping we keep them. I believe they are the best seats for ice viewing.

Sounds good then. IMG_3778.jpg

Couple of of my fav shots of ice! The size of the square berg considering we flying around 38.000 must be gigantic. Hope you get to see some.

We’re off! We left Adelaide yesterday for a one night stopover at Rydges Hotel, Sydney International Terminal. The hotel rate was $226 including a $35 food and beverage credit. We arrived at the hotel at about 4pm.

I had requested a runway view which was granted – on level one! We watched the Port v West Coast game and then headed to the sports bar at the hotel for dinner at about 7pm. Michael has a scotch fillet steak and I just had chicken wings. He had four glasses of shiraz and I had five beers for a total bill of $123. My Rydges black card weaved its 50% magic (surprisingly) and the bill was reduced to $61.50, which was then reduced by the $35 credit at checkout. The cheapskate was happy :D.

Today we leave for Johannesburg on QF63. I've been watching the seat maps for ages and was happy when about six weeks ago our aircraft changed from a refurbished 747 to one of the two unrefurbed planes that still have the old F cabin sold as J. I selected 1A & 2A immediately. This all got a lot more exciting when last week we found out that one of the two planes, VH-OEB, had received an F cabin refresh with new seat covers and carpet. I checked flightaware.com yesterday to see where VH-OEB was and unfortunately it was on its way to Johannesburg, so there was no way it would be back in time for QF63 today. Such is life.

We are currently sitting if the SYD F Lounge. Breakfast was good and I’m now enjoying a Chivas Regal Ultis scotch whiskey which sells at Dan Murphy’s for $220 for 700ml.

I took advantage of my cheapskate tendencies to get an $88 GST refund from a Laptop PC I bought a couple of weeks ago, and two bottles of Jack Daniel’s duty free with $10 off each bottle with vouchers I found on OzBargain.

We’re looking forward to the flight and hoping to see some ice on the way.

Have stayed at IC Joberg airport a few times and the Hotel is fantastic, great upgrades if you are a premium member, restaurant was very slow service though

Could I ask how long the queues were? I'm departing SYD soon at about the same time of day but the thought of waiting an hour to get a $100 GST refund is not exciting me.

Just make sure you do the GST refund online so you have all the paper work done. There are two lines, one for people who have done the online application and have the bar code, and the other line for those who haven't. The trouble is the chinese fill up both lines. So every now and then someone comes along the line to check on if you are in the right line !!

Happy travels froggerADL.

Darn, I just missed you, QF63/64 usually goes right over my house (at about 35,000ft). You probably passed over about an hour or two ago. We get the usual SYD-MEL traffic overhead, but 63/64 is very distinct.

Really looking forward to hearing this TR.

yes we didn't know about this last year, but quickly got onto the phone and filled the form in and by the time we got to the end of the shorter queue it was all done. :)

I just used it on Friday departing on QF11, so a bit earlier. I must have been in the line around 8am and it was super quick. Only two people in front of me.

Only took ten minutes or so in the queue that is only for those that have completed their claim using the TSA app.
