Was down the S Coast today and did a small detour to check out the launch day today. Looks like 95% finished just small bits and bobs to finish. Was very busy within the area in what looks like a dead industrial port "end of town" sort of area.

I guess the downside is Station Pier is in a great location for tourists, accessible by Tram, and has some great food options right out front. Seems the only way to get to this new port is by car, train/taxi combo.

You drive through North Shore when navigating back to the M1. Possibly one of the worst suburbs I have ever driven through. Lock your doors.

haha yes spot on, I grew up nearby, in the European area of Bell Park & North Geelong, but yes North Shore is the pits, not a safe area during daylight, after dark, stay indoors at all cost, hope the ships dock during sunlight hours!

The dock pier as you say is in dead industrial area so little different, few run down old varying manufacturing buildings.

Mind you the old manufact buildings are interesting to look at as they haven't changed much since the area closed down, (if you look beyond broken glass windows & graffiti), port closed etc. Some arty farty museum store there & couple old 60's era memorabilia type well worth a look in.

I have my (and the car's) tickets booked. Hopefully it will have stopped raining by then (April). The boss is going to fly with Rex and meet me at Devonport.

Was Port Melbourne much better than that 40 years ago?

Was that when you wanted to go? Stories are that the bookings are very tight even 6 months out and if you have a caravan or trailer fergeddaboutit.

Yes, you'd hope it stops raining by April. About 3 days' sailings were cancelled last week due to high river inflows into Devonport harbour! I think water levels too high for the infrastructure.

For those wondering there is a public car park/viewing area which they have built, and is sort of hidden down the back. You drive in as per normal and follow the road right down to the end of the pier then keep going toward the end and is a big car park. Good place to see people off too. Good spot to take the kids if they want to see the boat as it then spins around right in front of you. I have a new found fascination in boats now, loved the rumble of the engines as it spun around 🤣IMG_0588.jpg
