SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

While I'm here.... Have only flown F/R on SQ, but am flying J in November. A380 SYD to SIN and the 330 to DPS (Upgraded to R for the day flight SYD-SIN though). Re seat selection on the 380, does anyone know if 18 D&F are as favoured as 17 A&K. We want the bit of extra foot/leg room without the cubby, but want to sit together. Its SQ221 so we will be sleeping for most of the flight, hence not wanting the cubby confinement.

Great, thanks for the advice.
I will def try that next time when kids are older, I am thinking it would be waste to put them into F/R at this point in time.
Ended up booking J last night for next year in April, CBR-SIN. Our first time in anything better then cattle ...
Not the best plane in the world, but catching a flight from SYD or MELB time-wise did not work out for us.

Once you do a confirmed award booking in J, can you just upgrade them to F/R for the difference in points?

Kind of, we did it this way:
Called and reserved the flight in R (given 4 or 5 days to finalise the booking), and cancelled the booking in J, she then refunded the points and submitted our refund, stating it could take 4 weeks for the refund (although it only took 2 days)
Called the next day when all the points showed back in the account, confirmed the R booking and paid the tax.

You can do just a change, but the cancel fee is less than the change fee ($15 instead of $20 per Pax for KF Silver). Thats two beers in Bali (I think).

Its not strictly an upgrade, its a new award booking. I do not think there is any F on the 777-200 flight from CBR-SIN (but I could be wrong). In any case, as mentioned above, you would need to book the F seats, pay the points and then cancel the J reward.

I do not know about the current system, but in the past I have been able to upgrade from J to F online for no $ as long as the route was not changed. But I did change the date of travel.

If a rout does not have F on one leg I don't think you would be able to change online as the option probably will not come up.

Yep you are right, no F CBR-SIN
We were thinking of flying to melb or Syd then flying F, but getting seats for 4 people too much work. Rather work our way up.

Would like to take this opportunity to thank the AFF community for the info provided. There is no way we would of been able to put out the odd $15k for these tickets, but at a fraction of the cost it was possible due to this forum, especially the AMEX sub forum. It is a shame I could not jump on this sooner...I had always though of AMEX as an expensive overrated card due to myths and popular beliefs, but this is far from the truth!

Yup, i also have to say a big thank you to the AFF community for patiently answering my never ending questions about booking my first J and F award redemption with SQ (and other travel related questions and alerting me to great promos and credit card signups) This site is a wonderful resource. Never in my wildest dreams could i imagine myself in a $10k plus flight for less than 1k in credit card annual fees :D

spoilt my dad with a ticket in J on SQ from SYD to DEL return.

he in his mid 60s now, flying since early 80s all over the world for work but never in J.
he's already told me I've spoilt him now and there is no going back to Y, lol uh oh.

I've got the outbound leg of next year's Euro-trip booked, the inbound leg should come available for booking in a few weeks.

Award saver F between MEL and SIN and R between SIN and LHR. Departing Sat morning which is a big plus, previous premium award flights with other airlines usually have to depart Tue to Thu at some strange hour.

I note the R seats between MEL-SIN seem to be in hot demand, most(all?) legs waitlist immediately.

I looked in the SQ wiki, but couldn't see it
IS F class : Suites and R Class : 1st class?
cheers

Thanks for that
Just a question regarding suites, do they allow more then 1 person into it?
Like if I had a friend in economy, for some of the flight could they chill out in my area? It's so spacious!

Imagine Suites if everyone had a friend.....

A big part of the benefit of F/Suites is the exclusivity and the greater quiet etc.

However having said that I have had read reports of it sometimes being allowed. But it is normally a no from what I can gather for the obvious reasons.

Unfortunately not. You can ask a friend to join you for a meal, if they are also travelling in F.

I have seen someone from J come up to F to have a pre-dinner drink with their friend in F (but were served J champagne while the F pax had F champagne.)

My wife and mother have J saver bookings Brisbane to Paris on 8 September 2017 to see son/grandson in Toulouse. Mother now wants to delay her flight due to issues with Dad in a nursing home.

Phoned SQ tonight to see about changing Mums bookings by 2 weeks. Had already checked availability and only waitlist for 22 September and a few days either side.

SQ told me no problem with the Brisbane to Singapore flight but the Singapore to Paris is the waitlist. Changed the booking over the phone to waitlist. The SQ rep mentioned something about booking being cancelled by 3 September but did not understand what he was getting at. Have since received the email with change to the booking which reads:

Please note that the ticket issuance time limit for your Singapore Airlines/SilkAir flights is
03 Sep 2017 1000 hours GMT, after which your booking will be
cancelled. Kindly arrange for your ticket(s) to be issued early and do take into consideration the operating hours of your local Singapore Airlines office.

Is anyone able to shed any light what that means? Is it that if waitlist has not cleared that Mum is stuck with 8 September booking?

Have checked Expert Flyer and the Singapore to Paris flight on 23 September has only 10 vacant whereas the one the next day has 28 vacant seats. Either day suits Mum. Is it possible to have multiple waitlists?

That means if the waitlists don't confirm by then and the booking isn't ticketed, the waitlists will fall out, and you will be stuck with Sep 8 ticket (assuming they haven't cancelled that one already). You can be proactive and re-waitlist or ask the deadline to be extended. It's usually possible to have multiple waitlists.

Also have you considered other ports as back up plan (eg Barcelona + surface transport to Toulouse, FRA or ZRH with transfer to Toulouse on LH or LX ... and convert the ticket to a star alliance ticket (could even be lower mileage)?
