SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Recently read somewhere that you can let SQ know if your flight is for a special occasion and they may organise you a cake or something "special". I have a couple of J award seats booked through velocity for my wife and I's 10 year wedding anniversary to CDG. Do they do this for Velocity rewards, and how do I organise this? It would be a nice little surprise for her, as she knows everything else going on for the getaway.

My wife and I are flying Suites redemption on the weekend for our anniversary and they've ordered a cake for us. I redeemed by converting Velocity points to SQ points so technically a 'pure' SQ redemption but should be ok. Give them a call and ask. Shouldn't matter what points currency you used to redeem.

For those of you who may be interested, here are a couple of photos of the food from my recent Suites flight on SQ308 (SIN-LHR). Breakfast and lunch served.

Had BTC poached eggs which were absolutely perfectly runny. Main for lunch was BTC Boston lobster thermidor.

Has anyone tried to move to an earlier flight on the day of travel?

We have 5 in total and 3 are flying TPE-SIN-SYD around 2-3hrs earlier than the other 2 (all J). Was wondering if there would be a chance that they could put us all on the same flight on the day..

Hi,

I'm flying to Maldives tomorrow with Singapore with SQ. I've this afternoon seen news reports of potential volcanic activity in Indonesia. This could potentially cause us delays given Singapore's proximity to Indonesia.

I've been in touch with my insurer Allianz who has told me that Indonesian volcanic activity is specifically excluded from their policies.

I understand I've left my run a little late. I was hoping to avail myself of the generosity of other members' experiences. Might here be any other insurers (happy to pay extra to buy a new policy) who might not have this exclusion (I understand it's Saturday night so might be pushing my luck if an insurer doesn't have an online option).

Appreciate any information. Apologies in advance if I should have posted this in another thread.

Albyd.

Even if you find a company that will cover it, I'd be doubtful they'd cover this specific event as it's pre-existing.

I wouldn't worry. If all the flights are on the one ticket you'll be accommodated on other flights if yours is delayed. At worst case, if you are delayed in Singapore and the airline doesn't provide accommodation in the event of weather delay, hotels are plentiful and in all price ranges.

There are a range of possible flight paths between SYD and SIN, that give scope to avoid ash clouds coming from Indonesian volcanos. From memory last time there was an eruption that affected the operation of flights into and out of Bali, flights between SYD and SIN and even SYD and Jakarta were not affected. Of course there is always a chance that it could delay things, but I wouldn't be overly concerned at this stage.

Interesting find today:

Search availability on SQ website - website returns no availability at all on MEL-SIN-HAN in J for the dates I'm searching. Call SQ and ask to search for TG flights MEL-BKK-HAN as this also works, and they say no *A availability, but the SQ J flights that are waitlisted only on website is available over the phone as J saver. Definitely no tracer sent or request - just flat out was available.

No arguments as got what I needed for mother tizey, but is this a common occurrence?

I had the opposite experience...
Found online
SYD-SIN (Suites)
SIN-MLE (Y, J waitlist)
MLE-SIN (Y, J waitlist)
SIN-SYD (Suites)
Called up to get the long legs in Suites and the hop SIN-MLE and back in Y,all on one ticket and was told the Suites legs were only available for waitlist, as were the Y SIN-MLE-SIN, which contradicted what was on the screen in front of me.
I said I'd 'check my dates' as I didn't want waitlist, and call back.
I received a call 5 mins later with the SQ operator saying he now had one of the Y legs as non-waitlist but available.
I was still seeing all 4 of my required legs as available @ saver.
So, ended up booking online, separate tickets SYD-SIN-SYD in suites (hopefully the new ones, April next year) and SIN-MLE-SIN in Y.

Just in the SQ F lounge at SYD. Wanted to say thanks to everyone on this thread for all the advice and learnings. About to take my first Suites Flight. Have just finished lunch and am enjoying the lounge and have just received my Hand written TPR invite. Shame I'm not more of a drinker ... need to pace myself or I'll sleep through the flight!

Have a great flight! It's a good short sector to enjoy the service, then you can get a good sleep on the connecting flight.

I need to fly in F with more people like you ;). Though if you're a Dom drinker we'll be fine, but if I see you looking at the bottle of Krug it's champagne corks at 20 paces :D

49 days till my F trip to Japan.

My feeling was they were happy to cook you something if they had the ingredients.

Just make sure you keep room for the 10+ courses you'll be served on your flight.

Only 10 courses!

The boss asked for an 11th - ice cream.

After some consternation, the hostess came back, very apologetically with ice cream.

90 seconds of apologies later, the boss was enjoying 11th course and was not at all fazed that it had come from 'Economy'. Unlike the hostess who was mortified at the thought of serving any item in Suites not on china, let alone in a CARDBOARD container. The boss described the look on the hostess' face as if she was worried about being hit by lightening!

The boss only revealed the ice cream's existence as we were walking down the corridor AFTER the flight to SYD. Little did I realise being in 1F vs 2F did have some drawbacks!

The first world problems we have to bear (2 actually!)

I have received a birthday cake in flight before - as it was my actual birthday. Served with 3 mimosas (for 2 people). However it seems it was simply done by SQ as no one arranged it for me.

My boss asked why the stewardess did not put it into a bowl before serving? :D

We have 4 going in December so that sounds wonderful. The two youngsters heading to London with us are wait listed for Suites on our flight to London. Naturally I thought first in best dressed. They are currently landing 3 hours after us but are hoping their wait list to our flight comes thru.
