SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Super excited!

Placed a suite saver waitlist for Sq232 7 Sept last Wednesday. Expert flyer showing F2. Asked for a chaser last night and the most wonderful SMS ever appeared this morning and was able to confirm saver award at 11:40am.

Can’t wait to try the new A380 suite!

Also had my first new R exp yesterday and at the risk of sounding like a wet blanket there are so many things wrong with these Suites.

The biggest plus though is how comfortable the seat is to actually ‘sit’ in - just a fabulous seat.

Whatever you do don’t choose 1A or 1F - sitting in seat for take off / landing it feels like your snout is pressed up against bulkhead. The lights for both these seats are forward of your body and shine straight into your eyes if you are trying to read - other suites the lights are over your shoulders.

So much absolutely wasted acreage in every Suite - and as for location of earphone jack - I defy anybody to find that without seeking assistance from cabin crew.

IMHO - just totally hideous design and layout.

Thanks for the heads up CE.

Only 2F and 3F left to choose so I got 2F.

I have read a lot of reviews, so I am mentally prepared for those issues. But still excited to try something new and hard to get.

I'm yet to try the a380 suites but have watched heaps of videos on them

8 find it amazing how something that's so new and gorgeously designed be so bad :)

In TPR - they're serving Dom Perignon 2009 Vintage which I have to say is rather nice. About to be accompanied by Lobster linguine.

Boston Lobster also awaits me in a few hours.

Can I ask where you are flying?

I just enquired about flights to UK 24 th sep today.
Got told 1x f, 1x j and 1x prem left.

While the rep. Was calculating my taxes, f and j disappeared. Not even avail on wait list

I called the traveller and called them. Back and the prem economy seat had disappeared too

This doesn't sound right. Normally when you book the seat it is held and secured, then they tell you the taxes (after entering in your name and everything else).

With SQ they only charge you actual taxes, no fuel surcharges. So if you find seats, just go ahead and lock them in.

At this short notice I wouldn't be expecting to find a whole bunch of awards available (September this year right?)

But if you wait another week or so Cathay Pacific should open up (they start releasing seats around 2 weeks or so before departure, right up to a couple of days prior). And Lufthansa first class will also open up at 14 days prior to departure. They fly from most major Asian hubs including Tokyo, Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore. You still need to get to Asia, but the long haul should have some options.

Hi all, just after some advice, about to start looking for reward flights for 3x J , from ADE to Frankfurt, I'm wondering if I can fly to Perth in economy paid, and link that to a reward flight flight in J to Frankfurt in order to save on points ( will need to save points for return flights) and greater availability from Perth
Advice welcome

I think. I might have asked how much taxes on a mixed cabin was so the rep had to log out and start a new booking. So that's where i shafted myself.

Yes sep this year. It's short. Notice but for a friend in need.

Thnaks for the info. About Cathay.

So how do. People booking at such short notice. If you're desired flights don't become available you run the huge risk of paying tripe regular fares

Unfortunately the simple answer is 'no'. You can't add a paid fare to an award ticket to get the benefits of a through connection.

Many people do however fly on separate tickets, you just allow a sufficient buffer to provide for any potential delays. This will vary depending on the route, frequency of operation etc. And probably avoid low cost carriers who could leave you stranded in the event of service disruptions.

I'd probably allow at least 4-5 hours buffer time (not so bad considering you'll have a lounge from three hours prior to departure).

I really wouldn't worry about taxes. You'll pay several hundred dollars surcharge to leave the UK in a premium cabin (anything but economy). But otherwise taxes from other ports in Europe will be in the region of a hundred or so dollars. Not worth losing a seat over. (No additional taxes flying in to the UK, only out).

Booking at short notice all depends on the route. You can often find seats with creative routes (for example MEL/SYD to Bali on Qantas followed by Emirates out of Bali to anywhere in Europe). Or you can look at second tier carriers (Air India for star alliance for example). And single seats always easier than two or more. Using the multi city tool can find departures AU-Asia followed by connections from Asia to Europe, these connections may not show up on a single point-to-point search.

Failing all of those, and any last-minute release of seats (like Cathay or Lufthansa, or even emirates), you either change dates or buy a ticket.

I think your return dates may also run into school holidays making availability harder?

(Appreciate this is an SQ thread, but I think the OP mentioned availability of points on other programs and carriers)

My award was for Syd-sin-pnh. I already had this itinerary confirmed for J. I asked them to add the F saver wait list on 29/8. I noticed that F saver waitlist for these new suites, at least for Syd sin last week, appear to come online around 9 days prior to flight. E.g. my 7/9 flight didn’t have F saver wait list until the early morning of 29/8. Whether this is a consistent pattern, I am not sure. I was only monitoring for a week or so.

If travelling solo 2F will give you greatest chance of securing a ‘double Suite’ all on your lonesome as 1F being bassinet seat cannot be selected online.

Just called SQ. They said 1F is occupied by a passenger, not blocked. Does that mean there is a high chance of a baby in that suite? Or do they sometimes release 1F to certain high ranked members?

Always possible that a parent with an infant will have secured this Suite but highly unlikely - anybody can call up and request 1F but will be advised that may be required to be moved if Suite required by another pax with infant.

Try calling again you may get a different answer - dunno - it may just be what it is.
