SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

It looks like it would become quite a good missile in sudden turbulence.

Which is why I am surprised it's being recommended by crew to be used as a dining chair. It is not anchored and there is no seat belt (which goes against the 'recommendation' to have your seat-belt fastened while seated). Something I hadn't thought about but I guess there must be two oxygen masks for each suite (in the event of a lap infant), so it might not contravene the rule on that particular ground.

So nobody wants to have a crack at what this is?

It is simply a 'stool' found only in new R that serves 2 purposes:
1. It is the stool that a partner can perch on to enable 2 pax to dine together in 1 Suite - remember no ottoman in new R as in old or indeed in all F seats.
2. Footrest / leg rest is so short in new R that anybody over about 5' 10" or so is going to have half their lower leg extended over end of leg rest - so uncomfortable - so place this stool at end of footrest extended or deployed and then you have a complete footrest:

And people wonder why I say the new R is simply hideous? But even worserer - when seats are deployed in forward facing direction footrest simply WILL NOT deploy as that position is deemed at Take Off or Landing:
View attachment 172077
The only only time footrest can be raised to any level is when seat swivelled and facing TV - except !A and 1F which will rotate 180deg so can face partner in 2A or 2F and in this position footrest will also deploy.

Now bear in mind I think there is only 2 of these stools onboard so claim one quickly.

I still don’t get how carriers can invest $100’s of millions in to sears like this that just aren’t fit for purpose. Crazy.

So I need to be in BKK in December this year for a wedding and had a look at economy prices (ex SYD), SQ was asking for $1,600 rtn, Thai at $1,350 and QF at $1,500. Given you can get rtn fares around $700-$800 in low season, I'm bit loathed to part with my hard earned. I have a stash of KF miles which I could use ( with some availabilty showing in KF), is this a wise use of 56,000 KF miles - an economy redemption in peak season?

Yeah, it's not a bad redemption when the economy fare is that high.

Normally the best value redemptions are for premium (first or business class) awards where the cost of the tickets are high. But in this case you're actually getting better value than a business class redemption*. So unless you're saving up for another trip using SQ points this is an ok buy.

*Economy award = 56K for $1600 = 2.85c per point
Business award = 124K for $3280 = 2.64c per point

Although the value is slightly less compared to the TG economy price = 56K for $1350 = 2.4c per point, but still very close to the business class level.

Hi guys,

Have just finished reading through all 345 pages of this thread - it's been very informative and helpful to get my head around booking a suites award to Europe.

I've been doing dummy searches on KF to try and gauge availability for suites between SIN-FRA but I haven't been able to find any saver award availability, not even waitlist between 30 days to 354 days out. I have noticed the waitlist option finally opens up less than 30 days out only. Can someone else do a dummy search to confirm?

Cheers

Welcome to AFF @akan28

SIN-FRA is one of the hardest routes to find saver availability on. Your best chance is to book either when seats open or waitlist closer to departure.

Wouldn't it be safer to wait list as early as possible (up to a year) and then hope it clears? Rather than wait until last minute and hope

Sure, if can find availability.

Usually I try to waitlist few options to increase my chances.
For example if need to get to FRA I ask to list CDG and LHR as well. In case of them clears (and FRA not) it’s possible to add *A connection to final destination.

Agreed - is it just MEL that has these eyesore of a BP given out or have other ports shared the same fate too?

Same out of JNB and CPT. It’s not only white, but like a Woolworths receipt.

I think that’s the same for all airlines there though. The printers all seem to be the same and all print the flimsy LCC boarding passes.

Thanks boomy. I'm trying to get a PER-JFK award in F with a stopover in FRA otherwise would consider other EU ports too.

I've read through the suites saver thread too and was wondering which of the below would be better if you or anyone else could give some advice?

1. Add a waitlist for a PER-JFK F saver when the seat is released and then if that gets confirmed, try to change the FRA-JFK to a later date and add a stopover in FRA or
2. Waitlist SIN-FRA and FRA-JFK in F saver separately and if one sector comes through, push to get the other confirmed?

In the mean time, get a confirmed J booking on the required dates for either option in case nothing comes through and to add the WLs to this booking.

SQ experts... if i make award bookings for 2 pax but on seperate PNR, are these easily merged on to one PNR by SQ ? Same flights.

Want to be able to sit together

Unfortunately this can't be done. While you can split PNRs, you can't join them. If in economy you'll have to wait until seat allocation opens up (if you aren't eligible in advance).

Will be in J... so guessing will have to try best to sit together thru seat map?

You can reserve your seats at the time of booking so there shouldn't be any worries. It's far better to pick your own seats together than rely on the airline to do it just 24 hours before departure as you could find yourself separated.

Thank you, much appreciated.

With that route so hard to get saver on, even more so in the past year, you're just going to have to be super flexible with your travel plans.

If you want a guaranteed seat, then you should secure a J flight for your preferred dates, but don't be surprised if F waitlist never clears.

You could also consider a RTW F ticket, depending on where you want to go, but this is subject to the same availability constraints.

SQ award seats are now back up on United.com.

I was able to change our J award from SQ225 00:05 A330 to seats on SQ223 09:40 A350.

No 17 hour layover in changi and a proper flat bed is a great result,

Just thought I'd check my seat and meal selections for SQ208->306 tomorrow, and I find that 'manage my booking' is not showing any of the seat selections that I made when booking. For SQ 208 the only PE seat available is shown as 31E, in the middle with a bassinet seat at either end! But my boading pass shows 33A which I had booked (strong preference for window seat). Which do I believe? And is there a chance to regain my other selections at check-in?

And although I selected "print all boarding passes" at online check-in yesterday, only the .pdf for the first, for SQ208, was available for printing. Again, I assume this can be rectified at check-in.

Have never had glitches like this in past SQ bookings.
