Many moons ago we flew SQ on our honeymoon. Somehow SQ found out about it and a cake appeared!! (Cabin class Y)

8 years ago - we flew MEL-CDG on SQ J to stay in Paris for a month for our 40th wedding anniversary. I'd chatted to the crew the evening before, and they woke us up with a cake, a handwritten card signed by all the crew, and a bottle of bubbles. Trying to eat rich chocolate cake at 4.30 am wasn't ideal but a lovely gesture. Flying in a very lightly loaded A380 was all part of the fun

Just about to book the return for my next SQ trip. It'll need to be over the phone as it doesn't look like the website will allow bookings out of CMN. Best connection is via IST, arriving in IST at 22:30 and leaving the next day at about 13:00. Does SQ just consider this a "connection" given it's under 24 hours?

I do a long transit in SIN (to JFK), and they DO consider it a transit at no cost.

Judging from this thread, there are some members who know the seating arrangements of Sq J intimately. Can you give me your opinion on seat 14K on the 777-300ER please?

The flight is the red eye SQ218, so I want to get some sleep. I’m flying on a codeshare so I can’t pick my seat online. When I logged into SQ they wouldn’t show me the seat map, but they allowed me to pick my preference for a window. They assigned me 14k on the way over and 14k on the A380 SQ231. Both appear to be in the forward mini cabin, but seat guru comes up with a warning for 14k on the 700-300: “proximity to the lavatories and galleys might be bothersome”. Is it really that bad? Should I bother ringing up to try and change it or is it enough that the smaller cabin is apparently quieter?

As an aside, is it worth ringing up to book the cook on a red eye? I’m not sure if I want to eat at midnight. I will be doing a short hop between Bangkok and Singapore as well, but it appears you can only book the cook from Singapore to Bangkok, not the other way round. My SIN-BKK flight is early morning and the book the cook options for breakfast look pretty banal, so really, the red eyes are the only ones I’d consider. Again, I have to ring up for that. As a codeshare I can’t even see the inflight menu, which is a pain.

It’s my first SQ business class flight and I’m very excited. I want it to be perfect!

On Singapore business class you ideally want the bulkhead seats. These come with full-sized footwells, rather then the small cubby holes you get with the other rows. This is one of the few exceptions where I take a bulkhead over mid-cabin, as the potential trade off of galley and WC noise is worth it for all the extra foot room.

Otherwise, I would generally go for a seat mid cabin. That gets you the least noise, disturbance and foot traffic. 14K being right by the galley is going to have more noise and foot traffic.

For you red eye you can have your book the cook selection in place of breakfast.

No book the cook ex BKK.

Book the cook is fine if you must have lobster on board. Otherwise there’s something to the surprise of seeing the menu on the day and getting to pick. At least it helps pass 10 minutes of time

Thanks! I did a dummy booking and it looks like 15A and K are free (the larger cabin bulkhead seats). There are also quite a few mid-cabin. I’ll change my seat to 15 I think.

Thank you for confirming my feelings re book the cook. Part of me wanted to order the lobster because that’s what everyone gets excited about, but honestly, I can get much fresher lobster anytime in Hobart. If I were on a daytime flight I’d go for one of the hawker dishes because I can’t get that back home. The element of surprise in regards to the inflight menu is definitely fuelling my anticipation. Even in economy I get excited about the SQ’s little menus. I’ll leave book the cook till next time when I hopefully can take a day flight.

So I just searched MEL-SIN for June 2020 in F and saw SQ208/207 available for redemption. Checked other dates and pretty much from 28th of March onwards all SQ208 flights are on 777 and F is available.

Does anyone know why? Is this just a temp change?

A few questions to check my understanding is correct. Will be making my first SQ F redemption shortly when my Amplify points get posted.

1. I know that TPR access for onward flights in J is same day only. Is this the day of arrival into SIN. The 6.05pm flight out of Sydney arrives at 12.20am so not sure whether I would get access at 10am on that day.
2. Do you need to ring for mixed class ie Syd to Sin in F then Sin to Kul in ?. I cannot seem to make any mixed class bookings come up even though the individual sectors do.

It’s day of arrival/legitimate transit for your inbound F boarding pass. Arriving 0020 and departing 1000 will be fine. Some have stretched it far more than the hours you have.

You need to call for mixed class redemptions, they can’t be done on line.

PS Boy are the 11am and 3pm flights out of Sydney hard to get on weekends!!!

Make sure they don't charge you for making the booking on the phone, they waive the fees for bookings that cannot be done online, but I've had to remind them of this before.

I can't tell you how to price it, but I can tell you what we paid/redeemed if that helps you calculate?

A one-way saver in J flying SYD-SIN-LAX is 121,000 miles + taxes per person

A one-way saver in R SYD-SIN is 85,000 miles + taxes per person
A one-way saver in J SIN-LAX is 95,000 miles + taxes per person
This would total 180,000 miles + taxes per person if booked individually

We booked SYD-SIN in R and SIN-LAX in J as a mixed redemption, and it was 167,000 miles and 119.80SGD in taxes.

The extra 46K miles for us to fly suites in the afternoon (full first dinner service), and have access to TPR after we arrive for a couple of drinks, then take a nap at Ambassador or Aerotel and back to TPR for breakfast was worth it for us.

Check the classes available on your flight before making a redemption.

Excellent question and the answer is probably no - would totally depend how late the sub was, the route / origin, Crew deployment and F & B provision - many factors involved.

This did happen to me once and there was no F cabin manned or offered on the sub aircraft - god it was so long ago I really cannot clearly remember the circumstances or route - don’t quote me I really don’t know but rarely would this ever happen.
