SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

On SQ flights in the past one of the absolute joys was being offered and served satay sticks while in J.

Last week I flew BNE-SIN and SIN-CDG and not a satay stick in sight.

Was I just unlucky or is this how things are now?

Both flights departed just before and just after midnight.
At least a Singapore Sling was available.

Another reason not to fly overnight?

We flown SQ246 in Sep (overnight) and got satay sticks.
Upon return on SQ245 (daytime) they did the whole satay cart ceremony but quantity served was exactly the same.

We flew in Aug-Sept. SQ 222 don't think we scored, SQ026 Yes, SQ377 Yes SQ211 Yes but I only scored 2 sticks not 3! :)

None offered at all on a recent SQ246 and was very underwhelmed with the service in general

Consistently inconsistent is what we can say about most airlines post covid. We also experienced some unusual average service onboard, particularly on daytime flights when all cabins were completely full and staff was overloaded. Just to be clear “average” service on SQ is considered 5* on some other airlines.

Yeah, I think I just got a poor flight unfortunately.
One this same flight I’ve had J flights with SQ SGN-SIN which was absolutely superb and also SIN-BKK which was also great. On the way over The BNE-SIN leg was very ordinary all round but SIN-HAN was excellent so I guess I can’t complain too much about a 1 in 4 strike rate

Have had 3x J day time departures this year and none served the satays even though it was on the menu for at least 2 of them.

Sadly as I always say the flights between Australia and SIN generally are the poorer experiences for me with the crew/offerings.

Curious why the crew seem to hate these flights ?

Not all staff hate it but generally service isn't as good on the Australian sectors.
The FA I had serving my side in J was the exception on our last flight into BNE. Great service and a couple of good conversations. for example she said that none of the staff resident in Singapore got laid off during covid only the "foreigners". So she was very grateful and so loyal to SQ. Luck of the draw.

I’ve had some absolutely wonderful flights ex Australia with SQ in the past but just luck of the draw I guess to get a fairly average crew. Probably soured more by it being my parents first SQ J long haul flight and at their age possibly their last. The good thing is I just spoke to my father who just landed back in SYD on MH in J which I purchased with QF points and he absolutely raved about it so I’m redeemed 🤣

My fiancé’s birthday today and flying FRA-SIN in J. Even though we are flying SIA rather than AC, the staff in the Maple Leaf lounge still made the effort to make up a nice little plate for her. I’ll mention to the SIA crew when we board.

She will miss a lot of her birthday I guess (though personally for me flying J on my own birthday works quite well thanks!). But I’ll make it up to her on a little layover in Sing - heading over to Raffles for a spa session 👍🏻😎

Question for the brains trust, hoping this is the best place for this: we are a family of four and my wife is flying to Europe on points in September '23, to catch up with her family, before I join with the family (kids are 7 and 5 then) a few days later. The plan was this:

wife to fly J on QF points, booked
me and kids to fly Y to Europe, booked (on SQ, fairly cheap, less than $3,800 all up, into FRA, out of ZRH, nearly back to pre-Covid pricing)
all of us fly back together, with wife in J on points, the rest of the family in Y, with changes to who is in J at some stage (we did this before).

Whilst we booked both flights in Y for myself and the two kids, and despite having points for the one way flight reward, the booking engine only displays waitlist options for the day we need, both Saver and Advantage. Looking at it more closely, it appears as if Tuesday and Wednesday departures ex Zurich have Saver availability to Sydney, the Thursday doesn't, and flights just opened up.

What is the proposed strategy here, does it make sense to book the waitlist option and this clears before space is opening up - if it does in the first place - or would you rather continue to monitor availability and jump on it when space becomes available? I really had hoped that every flight would have at least one seat available, that far out, but this doesn't seem to be the case. No status whatsoever with SQ, by the way, in case this is relevant for the order waitlists clear.

Any advice/ input is greatly appreciated, thank you very much!

Book what you can get right now IMO.
You can still Waitlist other options for no charge

Try checking a different departure city. I booked a (May ‘23) FRA-SIN this morning as CDG wasn’t available. A bit of mucking about in EU to get there, but the trains are great! 😉

I do find FRA quite good for both redemptions and far cheaper fares in F/J and it's a easy flight from FRA to most places in Europe

Seems like good change if SQ keeps offering choice of two champagnes in F. Means that Krug will be served on every flight unlike the current situation where some routes such as FRA are exclusively Comtes/Dom.

That's a shame. I preferred Dom over the kerosine Krug they serve. ;)

Out with 1 vinegar and in with another - thank God KRUG will be offered on ALL flts - I am on 228 to SIN next Tue with Vinegar 1 and Vinegar 2 being offered then 336 to CDG with Vinegar 1 and KRUG being offered - yeah yeah I can hear the murmurings - only a tool or a flog would describe unlimited free offerings of Dom and Comtes as vinegar but seriously neither do anything for me - in fact on 228 I may well be drinking the CH from J if that is loaded - time will tell - all makes for fun flying huh?

Edit: But ever worser return flts are LH J FRA-BUD (no Champs full stop here) / EK F BUD-DXB-MEL (Vinegar 1 only on these 2 sectors but the reds make up for that - 201 Astralis last EK DXB-MEL flt this time DXB-MEL sector showing 2013 Runrig which I have never tried)

On that point SQ offering The Bogan as a First Class wine is a joke - ple3ase send feedback if you have experienced it
