SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Question for the brains trust, hoping this is the best place for this: we are a family of four and my wife is flying to Europe on points in September '23, to catch up with her family, before I join with the family (kids are 7 and 5 then) a few days later. The plan was this:

wife to fly J on QF points, booked
me and kids to fly Y to Europe, booked (on SQ, fairly cheap, less than $3,800 all up, into FRA, out of ZRH, nearly back to pre-Covid pricing)
all of us fly back together, with wife in J on points, the rest of the family in Y, with changes to who is in J at some stage (we did this before).

Whilst we booked both flights in Y for myself and the two kids, and despite having points for the one way flight reward, the booking engine only displays waitlist options for the day we need, both Saver and Advantage. Looking at it more closely, it appears as if Tuesday and Wednesday departures ex Zurich have Saver availability to Sydney, the Thursday doesn't, and flights just opened up.

What is the proposed strategy here, does it make sense to book the waitlist option and this clears before space is opening up - if it does in the first place - or would you rather continue to monitor availability and jump on it when space becomes available? I really had hoped that every flight would have at least one seat available, that far out, but this doesn't seem to be the case. No status whatsoever with SQ, by the way, in case this is relevant for the order waitlists clear.

Any advice/ input is greatly appreciated, thank you very much!
Thank you for everybody who responded to this, the feedback/ input has been greatly appreciated.

Update, and then we can go back to the choice of Champagne :). My better half actually suggested we call SQ and ask whether they can rebook the Economy tickets to a day that has J Saver availability. As we have booked Economy lite fares that do not allow rebooking, or any kind of changes, I was sceptical but the call centre moved the dates for the Economy booking one day forward, whilst I booked the Krisflyer J redemption online. No fees for doing so, which I questioned three times but we now have confirmed bookings for three Y, and one J, on the same flights, albeit a day earlier than originally planned.

Very happy with the outcome. Thank you again for any suggestions, luckily no need to go down this path.

All credit due to SQ, on our recent trip to the US and CA my beloved daughter MissM borrowed a few items of mine that will never be seen again. In SIN my gadget bag was also missing however by the time I realised it was missing the aircraft we had flown in on was already on heading back to the US. I reported the missing item at the Kris Lounge, MrsM asked do you think you we will get that back, I said if we were on JL or NH most probably yes, SQ not so sure.

I was somewhat surprised this evening when there was an email from SATS informing me that my item (gadget bag) had been found, I have requested that it be forwarded to ADL for collection. I have some faith in humanity that there are still honest people out there.

A question please for those with more knowledge of points bookings.

I have a Saver award booking for 2, LHR-SIN in June next year that I need to ticket by Christmas. I was earlier advised by SQ to wait until now to add a flight into LHR to the itinerary as European award seats were not available when I made the original booking - hence the extension on the ticketing deadline.

I can see plenty of availability on the AC website from FRA, ZRH, VIE and, particularly, MUC to LHR within 24 hours of my flight to SIN but the agent at SQ could not see any flights when I just rang. Was I right to try again later or am I doing something wrong? It would be J into London but F/R to SIN.

I will need to be brief coz 228 very close to push back - there are some posts recently re SYD & MEL checking times - here are official MEL times:
MEL Checkin times
218 - 3hrs pre dep
238 - 3hrs pre dep
228 - 3hrs pre dep
208 - 3hrs pre dep

MEL Lounge opening times
218 - 3hrs pre dep
238 - 3hrs pre dep
228 - 3hrs pre dep
208 - 3hrs pre dep
*Above relates to std checkin counters as opposed to ‘kiosk’ checkin - more on that in later post

SYD is slightly different - technically the same but due to shorter gaps in dep times it almost equates to ‘all day’ checkin as it kinda was pre-Covid I gotta sign off now - more later 👍

Cont:
Check SYD dep times:
212 - 08:55
232 - 12:00
222 - 16:00
242 - 19:05

I cannot remember pre-Covid dep times but I don’t think they varied much from these above - so earliest checkin time is 05:55 with dep 08:55 - add 9 hours to that you get 17:55 so counters are open almost entirety of possible checkin windows - so SQ pretty well decided ‘all day checkin’ and this is still the case now I am informed (Rita called SQ SYD Station to clarify but even they were not sure) - maybe a 1hr window between 232 and 222 where checkin closed - no doubt some SYDsider could clarify?

So here is the thing - until yesterday SQ MEL were using std checkin counters to rear T2 checkin area close to Intl Dep entrance - ya got me?

Yesterday they moved to kiosk checkin area close to T3 where they used to be pre-Covid - ya got me?

But 1/2 the equip there wasn’t / wouldn’t work and it was a zoo - Wesley MEL SQ Station Manager pulling his hair out. But if and when they get it all working then it can and will be ‘all day’ checkin for SQ through the kiosks.

Lounge opening / closing tubes will remain same - advantage? Disadvantage? Who knows - time will tell 👍

Recent postings regarding Satays - here ya go:

OK re Satay offerings on SQ flts - Satay offerings depend on flt timings and routes - all satays are loaded in SIN and kept in chillers for out and inbound flts - they are not uploaded with normal catering supplies from dest ports. You can easily check if your flt will offer you Satay here - WILL I GET SATAY?

Satays are only offered where full lunch / dinner meal service offered - not for late supper service or breakfast service.

Remember only R, F and J pax are offered Satays. And Aust Govt prohibition of inbound meat products means no Satays ex any Aust Port

1 x A380 would help Melbourne, but we will never see that again sadly :(

SQ238 as the 777
SQ228 as the A380

If you believe the website we have also 1 long-haul A350 coming to MEL to replace the other A350

OK so there are 2 sections of SIN T3 SKL J - when you walk in to right is J1 - to left is J2 - I am trying to simply this coz I know boomy and penegal follow my posts - so J1 section is going to be extended again - see hoardings if you look back from SKL *Gold towards SKL main lounge entry?

Inside will be extension J1 to alleviate congestion peak times

T2 *Gold Lounge still not open - could be months nobody really knows
