So - Ahmet had replied to me via email that to ensure I rcvd full clarity he had contacted SQ Customer Affairs Officer, Australia and New Zealand who have just replied via email:

Dear Mr. Elite

To clarify your query surrounding our satay offering.

We would like to share that satay is offered in Suites, First and Business class on all flights with a flight duration of 5 hours or more featuring a full lunch or dinner service.

In addition, satay is served on flights departing from Singapore. However due to regulations, satay is not allowed to be brought in from Singapore into Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney for use in the flights departing from these cities and we are also not allowed to bring satay from Singapore into the United States of America for use on the return journey.

Mr Elite, we hope this provides clarity for your query and we thank you for taking the time to write to us and to allow us to respond.

FFS - I just read there is 777 on CGK route - less than 2hrs flight time - FFS - more feedback coming SIA way and a call to MEL Station Manager Mon morn - FFS
 
Are you saying this because of the regional/medium haul A350's they keep sending to MEL ?
Absolutely - the 350s with Reg layout were only ever designed for short and med haul flts - MEL route is >7hrs so considered long haul - 777 has F / 350 doesn’t - my favourite flt 238 still operating with 350

Nothing to do with MEL, it seems SQ treats Australia as regional destination ATM. ADL and BNE both > 7h served only by 350s. One can say these are not major cities but what about SYD >8h and the biggest most important hub which used to get up to 3x777 and 2x380 now 1x777, 1x380 and 2x350 :(

I would say that's the clear implication. I would say though there is not a bad seat on SQ.

Not shouting anyone down but I disagree.

The economy seats on the A350 BNE-SIN are simply awful.

Didn't realise how bad they were until the next day SIN-BKK on the A350. The economy seats in that configuration are comfortable. More space all round. Wider. Not tilted.

Wish they would use that configuration on the longer flights.

Not sure about BNE but ADL has always been a regional jet and the a350 was a significant improvement over the a330 with the angled flat beds. That being said even once the a350 was flying to ADL I had a preference to connect via SYD or MEL for the 777 or a380 product.

The problem with 777 and 380 is they have F cabins, which is great if you are in F but when flying J it hurts 😛 so I actually don’t mind 350 in J, especially if can get long haul config to/from BNE and avoid domestic connections :)

@boomy I agree with the a350 (long haul) comments but prior to covid I cannot recall SQ using that aircraft to/ from AU. A few weeks back I spent close to 18 hours in J on the a350 EWR-SIN, other than the meal service I had the seat in the bed position and had heaps of room to wiggle around and get intermittent sleep. To me the a350 regional jet J product is not that different to other J products used on other airlines.

I don’t hate the 350s, otherwise wouldn’t fly them countless times. There are two versions, the regional which I’m not a big fan of but it’s ok for daytime and the long haul which I said more than once and also posted photos on my recent TR showing how good it is, on par with 777 in J.

It was used on ADL (regional confit) and several BNE services (not sure which config).

For MEL it was used for SQ 207/8 and SQ 247/8 (the WLG service) but only in long haul config.

I wonder if the problem with the 777 and the long haul 350 on MEL right now is that the economy cabin is too small for the demand.

Heck, Scoot are selling their flights at least $400 one way, many going for up to $1000 just for MeL/SIN exclusive of luggage in economy, so presumably almost full, and demand is quite high.
 
SQ's flights to BNE, ADL and PER have always (even during the days pre-COVID) been operated by aircraft with a regional configuration so it's probably no surprise that the regional config A359s have replaced the B772 and A333s that used to go to those ports.

Flights to SYD and MEL were mostly (pre-COVID) operated by the A380s and B77Ws. However, the aircraft rotations post-COVID have been a bit of a hodgepodge probably because of a couple of reasons (purely my own conjecture):
  • There aren't enough A380s in the fleet,
  • There may be a shortage of tech or cabin crew on the B777 fleet (or a shortage of engineering staff to bring the hibernating B77Ws back into service),
  • The A350 is just that much more efficient compared to the B77W and so there is less incentive to put the less efficient aircraft back in service bearing in mind, the A350 in the long-haul config seats almost the same number of passengers as the B77W, and
  • There aren't sufficient numbers of A350s in the long-haul config to be able to send them here.
 
Agree with the above and during covid SQ retired 3 77W's as well

We will see what changes with the NH summer updated that commences 26th March 2023 which should be announced very soon

I believe that the final remaining newly refitted A380 is going to be used to Hong Kong from 1 December, which at least frees up 1 more 77W to be used somewhere

Sadly I think MEL will see 2 77W's and 2 A350 regionals for a very long time to come

When the 777X's start to enter the fleet perhaps in 2025 I doubt MEL will see one

It's such a shame SQ has the regional A350 :(
