SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Ok here we go again - I have tried to clarify service continuity during turbulence direct from Crew - OMG so way way more complicated than any of us mere mortals could ever contemplate so please please read following as broad outlines and do not respond with ‘Well on my flight …….’.

Re Captain announcements regarding turbulence - SQ have 3 broad levels of turbulence when seat belt sign will be illuminated:
1. Mild - pax need buckle up and Crew may continue service ‘with caution’
2. Moderate - pax need buckle up and Crew ‘may proceed with caution’ but at direction of Captain and at discretion of Cabin Crew’ -usually trolleys will not be used unless service has commenced and Crew in relevant cabins feel safe and comfortable continuing
3. Severe - pax need buckle up and all Crew will be seated

Now 1,000 variations to above can and will occur - I never ever thought about the fact that pilots seated up front experience nowhere near the degree of turbulence that crew down the cough end where turbulence is more pronounced on aircraft and who are on their feet are greatly more affected?

Have I missed postings by pilots on AFF to this effect?

Damn if you engage with Crew and actually show an interest in what they do it is amazing what you can find out

The problem is that it does not take much to go from Mild to Severe and beyond in a blink.
I wonder what "with caution" actually mean.
To what extent are IFM required to justify "calling it" to their superiors back at Airline Rd, S'pore?. How much pressure is there to deliver Catering to Cruiser/Boomy etc.

350LH best J seats are 11D and 11F or 19D and 19F - again all A and K seats have restricted footwell even the bulkhead rows:

Many thanks for the info and photos. I have made some changes for a couple of upcoming trips. I'm generally happy with 11K on the flight up to SIN, especially if a daylight flight (as I enjoy the view) but for the longer overnight legs, have changed to the D/F option where possible. My flight SIN-FRA in May has no D/F options available at all in the bulkhead rows.

And for those who spruik the views from SYD SKL F rather than the ‘dungeon’ at MEL well here are those wonderful views they speak of:

Just check out the consistency of the corrugations of the roofing steel - you could sit and admire that for hours on end could you not?
C'mon, if you'd just stretched out a bit to the left you'd hv seen the tail for your next flight to Nirvana, unless you arrived some unreasonably early that it hadnt arrvd yet ?

Re the SQ Bears - bear in mind they are designed primarily for children - there are only 5 or 6 pairs loaded ex SIN each dep and that is to accommodate both outbound and inbound sectors so there is not endless supply.

YES I take them whenever I am offered them as I hand them over to ‘the Ette’ who works with refugee children in Australia - many of these children arrive in Australia with the clothes on their backs and nothing else - I free little bear to them is priceless.
Tks for the explanation. Hv commented somewhere before that I hv nv ever been offered a bear in many F trips and indeed nvr seen them onboard, but I am heartened by the use you (and Ette) put them to. Respect

Those protocols are consistent with what was outlined in the other thread.

The issue is SQ’s use of the seatbelt sign - getting akin to those of US airlines - and the effect on service. The seatbelt sign on, even for ‘mild’, means no hot beverages. So for a red-eye into AU you’re going to want to place your order 90+ mins before landing and *hope* there’ll be a minute or two when you can get your coffee before the crew prepare for landing. Same with wanting to use the toilet.

The (over) use of the seatbelt sign is new since the SQ321 incident.

MEL - I only post what Crew inform me of actual status - not my opinions - please understand that.

Be nice to the Cabin Crew - interact with them - it will come back in spades:

You won’t be waiting for a drink - you won’t be saying these are dumb young learner Crew Members - hell you might even enjoy the experience and not even notice that seat belt light come on / go off occasionally 👍

Don’t get me wrong… this is nothing to do with the crew! who are always fantastic.

The service protocols come from head office. The pilots are also responsible for determining the level of warning, and there’s inconsistency there as well which further adds to the confusion of passengers.

It’s the rule itself that’s in question, not the cabin crew who have to do their best under the circumstances.

The bus driver should be and always will be in charge.

I personally have 100% confidence in SQ Pilots - they drive - I ride along - and I kinda think they know a tad more about this flying caper than I do.

It ain’t complicated - you see a better ride out the window? Go chase it 👍

Oh and another matter re onboard experience - BYO entertainment as onboard offerings currently are cough - but that is the way of the world now as we have all mostly seen all decent video offerings before we fly

All of the above - when was the last time you saw a new movie release and thought ‘Wow I gotta go see that?’

Just doubly be sure and BYO
