SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

I presume this is a Y booking - since part of itinerary is on LH you will need to ring SQ to book and it will become a *A (Star Alliance) booking - should be the same number of points but the taxes may vary.

Hello and apologies if this is the wrong place to ask this question but I am looking to make a KF redemption booking for 2 from Sydney to Manchester at the end of May. There are seats available at 53000 points each Sydney to Frankfurt on SQ and then Lufthansa availability to Manchester. Does this have to be 2 separate bookings or just 1 ticket I would need to phone to book right through and how many points should it be?
Are you looking to stopover in FRA, depending on the date of travel fly to MAN but not every day.

No that was the only economy saver seats I could find to get to Europe on or about May 31st from Sydney. My daughter is competing in Manchester on 3rd June but works full time so dates are pretty inflexible.

@luxury-lizard it has been a while since I have booked SQ plus another *A partner on the one ticket and I seem to recall it worked similar to QF being calculated by segment by carrier with *A partners requiring a few more points. The *A award rates kicks in when you do the RTW thing. I maybe wrong.

You could book to SYD-FRA with the availability you can see and ask to be waitlisted on the flight to SYD-MAN flight. Each to there own but I would go for the waitlist and book FRA-MAN separately closer to the date if the waitlist does not clear.

@freakyfly Here is the chart for Star Alliance round-trip awards. One way is half of 103,000, so 51,500 miles.
I think that is almost correct, I would have thought the total would be the one way is half of 103,000, so 51,500 miles SYD-FRA on SQ and then one way is half of 25,000, so 12,500 miles FRA-MAN with LH. So I would guess 64,000 points in total, at 51,500 miles AU-EU that is cheaper than just using SQ, with is 53,000.

This was the way KF calculated a SYD-HND-JFK a few yeas back. It was 115,000 miles to get to HND then another 140,000 miles to get to JFK with NH. I was to tight to use that many miles and just went the other way SYD-SIN-FRA-JFK on SQ metal for 167,000 miles.

KF is zone-based so the Star Alliance chart mileage should cover both SYD-FRA and FRA-LHR but pretty sure would require a call.
(I wasn't able to add on a Y FRA-LHR leg to a J SYD-BKK-FRA flight on TG booked with KF points once I'd booked the first flight a couple of years back. Not sure if that was because of the change in final destination but not completely relevant to your situation)

Yes changing departure/destination would in normal times mean cancelling and booking again with a change or cancellation fee.

At present due to Covid one can cancel for free and book a new flight. By calling it may be all done in the one communication.

I realise KF is zone based and as @freakyfly pointed out in theory the miles required SW Pacific-EU when using *A partners would be 51,500 miles (Y). Would this this mean if:
  1. If you could find rewards AU-UK, say TG (through flight) or TG and another *A carrier would KF treat this as SW Pacific-EU. In Y this requires less miles than if on KF saver and if in J around 1500 more miles as SQ AU-EU/UK saver is 116,000 miles or if my thinking is correct 117,500 miles using *A carriers based off the mileage chart, or
  2. Would it be charged as SW Pacific-SEA2 and SEA2-Europe which would be around 77,500 miles in Y and 166,000 miles in J, if my math is correct.
I am only asking as I generally use KF miles for SQ J redemptions. On the basis KF considers SW Pacific-EU on a single or multiple carriers (point 1 above) the option of using TG AU-EU/UK direct or to BKK and then any other *A carrier to EU/UK (assuming availability is there) at 117,500 miles my search options may have just widened. Sure TG may not be as good as SQ but in my books a 2nd class J vs 1st class Y wins hands down every time. I may now have to go and look at the milage charts for F comparisons :)

It would treat as option 1
Note that you cannot break those flights with a stopover on a one-way as it then prices as individual flights.
I understand that you can have 1 stopover on a return booking

I am not sure if I have understood what you are trying to do.

However:

In J return. *A.
Australia -Europe return is 235K on *A Chart booked through KF.

KF Saver award on SQ is 232K https://www.singaporeair.com/saar5/pdf/ppsclub_krisflyer/charts/SQ_AwdChart.pdf
Note that origin and destination zones are different for each chart.

Doing it as via BKK as two *A awards is 148K + 184K = 332K return.

Was killing time during 3/4 break in the footy and found the following from some notes I took during R flt FRA-SIN back in 2017 - interesting reading which I had totally forgotten about - you will get the picture 👍

Did I ever mention how much I loved 3C in old R?

Also took these notes after a conversation with ‘Gina’ on the same flt - again I think you will follow:

Used to be quite common to see a group of 20 inductees inside T3 doing initial stages of their training program with a couple of leaders.

Interesting point was that they never got to see inside SQ Lounges unless they were actually flying as civilians with eligible access

Looking at the T&Cs, I'm now not so sure you could book a TG/LH combo

2. Additional conditions for Star Alliance Awards
An itinerary may contain flights operated by a Star Alliance member airline (excluding Singapore Airlines), or flights operated by two or more Star Alliance member airlines (including Singapore Airlines). A maximum of six travel segments are allowed per itinerary

i read that as need to have at least one SQ flight on a mixed-Star award. Maybe it's interpretable more favourably but then don't see why would need the "including SQ" condition

(FWIW I'd pay a few more points to fly on SQ rather than TG if both had availability)

Full T&Cs here

Hey everyone!

So, I will be flying for the first time ever with SQ in June - going SIN - JFK on the A350 in Premium Economy.

Does anyone have any pointers for me, anything I might need to be aware of? I've always been a QF loyalist, but it was actually cheaper for me to go via Singapore (on QF) to the States then it was to go direct...

Can someone please confirm the name of the hotel that's just outside Changi (not one of the 3 terminal hotels). Is it the Crowne? Many thanks,
Though the Crowne plaza I believe is a quarantine hotel and only accepting bookings from the beginning of October. I did try for our May and August trips but couldn't.
