In the last few moments, a Singapore Airlines Boeing 777 operating a flight between London and Singapore has declared an emergency.

Singapore Airlines flight #SQ321, operating from London (Heathrow) to Singapore on 20 May 2024, encountered severe turbulence en-route. The aircraft diverted to Bangkok and landed at 1545hrs local time on 21 May 2024.
We can confirm that there are injuries and one fatality on board the Boeing 777-300ER. There were a total of 211 passengers and 18 crew on board.
Singapore Airlines offers its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased.
Our priority is to provide all possible assistance to all passengers and crew on board the aircraft. We are working with the local authorities in Thailand to provide the necessary medical assistance, and sending a team to Bangkok to provide any additional assistance needed.

I wonder if the one person was elderly and died from a heart attack perhaps due to the circumstances or they were just caught out without a seat-belt and it was so severe & that person got very unlucky in terms of their injuries.

Anytime there is severe turbulence without a heads up it's very dangerous, but a fatality? Is this the first fatality on SQ in the modern era?

Yes it is a real possibility, severe head trauma from being slammed into the ceiling could result in death, particularly if the passenger was elderly or young.

Happened over the Bay of Bengal. I’ve experienced very bad turbulence that lasted close to an hour that was pretty unbearable. I can’t imagine though what it must’ve been like on this flight.

Yes I was just about to post that flying over the Bay of Bengal is the part of flying that I hate the most. Always make sure I have been to the toilet before reaching it.

All the issues with the 737Max are all apparently relevant even though this incident has got nothing to do with the 737max...

It's a timely reminder to us all to always be strapped in whenever onboard.

Wow isn't this the flight route that we all fly and use? Must have been lots of Australians on board. Thanks for reminding us that no airline is immune from casualties and it is better not to fly if possible to avoid sticky situations like this.

Nothing extraordinary, the routing, has been quite common since Taliban took control of Afghanistan, and indeed QF2 took a similar path.

Relevant to this tragedy, It does seem the path over Bay of Bengal was slightly further north than typical (and slightly further north than QF2).
