SQ321 LHR-SIN Encountered Severe Turbulence [At least 1 Fatality and 30 Injured]

Avoiding consequences of a death onboard.

i heard someone on the radio who had a family member (from Adelaide) onboard say the seatbelt came on then instantly the turbulence struck.

The tweet (somewhere in this thread) of the person on board says the sign came on and the person put it on and then plane dropped.
Seat belt over the blanket?
I also seatbelt over blanket. Its also more comfortable with more cushioning.

This just reinforces the checking of my kids belts while they sleep under a blanket on a flat bed.
So hard to keep it on them when they are little too, not just because they aren't keen, but also because its a big belt on a tiny body.

Me too, also as a curtesy to the crew. Because on many airlines, they have to check whether you’re strapped or not and it’s only fair not to make them fiddle around with your blanket first. And the benefit for myself is that they don’t have to wake me up (though that’s probably going to happen anyway if the turbulence is bad enough, I’m a very light sleeper).

Don't you love the news.com.au Murdoch press - if you saw this you'd think he was on the plane but no he was in the Bangkok terminal

If a sudden drop in altitude results in people's heads hitting the ceiling, what would that potentially do a person laying down? Would be some serious horizontal whiplash that could be pretty damaging.

Indeed, in my non-expert opinion, a properly fastened seatbelt could be the difference between a minor injury and a life-threatening one. It could be a case of copping some vertebrae damage over, say, major brain deformation.

I view it similarly to all the tech gear in my car which will not totally avoid an accident but is designed to reduce the severity of deacceleration trauma so I may survive a crash.

Your point was well made.
