Squeezed into 80J!

FWIW, Y in the 380 isn't that bad (you get used to it!)

Please don't ever say that again as it makes me shiver.
My fear is when I read things like that it may actually come true for me. Thankfully I've never had to experience Y in an A380 and I thank my luck stars each time I board an international flight over 6 hrs and see what J seat.

So I say to the universe ... thank you for what you have given me but please make this bloody GFC go away so we can all get back to 'extravagant' spending.

I was lucky - I selected seat 80B on my flight from LHR to MEL. 80A and 80C boarded after me and it turned out they were a couple and asked me if I would swap so they could sit together. I ended up in seat 80A instead and now thinking back, I must have spoiled their plans for an empty middle seat!

Trust me you get used to it, no need for the shivers...

I hate when that trick fails

Or even worse, when on JQ (so having paid for seats), choosing 2 aisles across from one another, and finding they've crammed one person into the middle anyway. Sigh.

I was travelling with a friend for a 2 week holiday in the USA. I looked up the flight ahead of time, and quickly realized 80A or 80K would be the best seats for only 25 bucks. My friend is really tall, like 6 foot 7 or something. I'm average height but overweight. Anyway, I told him if he wanted a good seat like me (I chose 80k) that he should book 80A. But he wanted to sit together, which was so stupid. I told him it's his own choice.

You're both muppets for not securing 80A & 80K when you booked months ago.

Anyway skip forward a few months, I kept checking the flight information, and the rear section of the plane there were heaps of spare seats. I knew that the spare seat in our 3 chair row would be empty. When we boarded, I said my friend could have the extra legroom because Id rather have the wider seat, especially because there would be no one next to me. How horribly wrong I was.

Let me rephrase that for you. You kept checking the seat map prior to departure which displays the seats that have been already assigned to pax who either have the frequent flyer status to pre-allocate their seating gratis or for those pax who elect to pay the AUD25.00.

Your biggest mistake here was that you assumed that the unallocated seats were to remain empty when in fact they would have been assigned to pax when they checked in for the flight approximately 2 hours prior to departure.

All that wouldn't be so bad if the two exit row passengers in front of us hadn't been arrogant annoying Americans. But they were. As soon as we hit cruising altitude, less than half an hour into a 13 hour flight, the cough put his seat right back with a nasally "Excuse me" like only Americans can.

You were lucky you got an "excuse me" as most recliners don't even bother to say anything to the pax behind.

Perhaps the thing that annoyed more more than any ridiculously designed seating arrangement, or loud mouthed las vegas gambler, was the fact that there wasn't even supposed to be anyone next to me.

I don't know why you thought somebody wasn't meant to be next to you. You wrongly assumed that the plane would have all these 'spare seats' when all you were looking at is a small percentage of pax who had pre-assigned their seats. The only way to guarantee that is to pay for an extra seat which you didn't.

Remember how I said the plane was mostly empty at the rear? Yeah well it was, until Qantas decided to "Co chair" a united airlines flight. In other words, they hadn't filled their 747 with enough Americans to make it worth their while, so they decided to do a little deal with Qantas, filling our A380 to maximum. Not only that, but these freeloaders also caused a half hour delay to our take off because we had to wait for their extra food service items to be loaded onto the plane.

I believe codeshare (not co-chair) is the term you are referring to however your assumption that QF have a codeshare arrangement with United is incorrect. Perhaps the situation you encountered was that a United flight was either cancelled or overbooked and they would have asked QF how many seats they had available for purchase.

The United pax were not freeloaders as UA would have paid QF a lot of money for those seats, more in fact than what you paid for your ticket.

Well, if nothing else, I am sure the United ticket holders were happy. :D

Having flown United Y a few years ago, it still ranks as one of my most uncomfortable flights.

I love how the fact a free/blocked seat wasn't available lead to a rant about the plane being a death trap. Had there been a spare seat, and somehow no one in the exit row in front to recline, this rant would have been full of praise... it's amazing what a difference a spare seat can make!

I agree with you that the united passengers would have been happy lol

I'm still not sure if this is a real post or the OP was trolling for reactions but I'm going to assume the former for now. In my opinion, this has to be nominated for one of the worst posts on this forum, along with feper's deliberately wetting the seat that was supposed to be his.

I'm most amazed at the rant about the passenger in front daring to recline his seat at some stage during a 13 hour flight and he had the nerve to even say excuse me AND be an American!! Preposterous!

the UA pax are not freeloaders, but nor did UA pay QF the money you think they did. It may however have been more than what the OP paid.

Referring to the highlighted part only. .... and you know this how :?: Unless you provide some justification to your comment I have to disagree with you.

I am sure the post is real

I suggest people lighten up; it was post on another thread before being split out to be a report of its own.

I find it's really interesting how different people react to different situations when flying.

If nothing else (and I believe it is more) this thread is educational.

How did ozbeachbabe know that UA paid QF a lot of money?

But to answer your question there are set fees that airlines charge each other in circumstances such as these which are less than published fares and certainly less than fares available on the day.

Considering OBB's background, I'd imagine she's in a fairly good position to comment

Well I dont know OBB's background, nor do you know mine.
To use straitmans line "Unless OBB provides some justification to her comment I have to disagree with her"

Many of us do know OBB's background. So we don't need such justification. Lack of knowledge of your background is probably why the question was asked of you.

What is this? A playground?

Here I was thinking this forum was one of mature adults sharing their knowledge and mutual interest......

In any case, if you or OBB or anyone else for that matter wants to believe that UA paid published fares to QF for the uplift, you're very much entitled to do so. Ive been a long time lurker and a member for only about 2 months, but its become evident this forum is not for me. I havent experienced this level of petulance and puerility since, well... ever. I was far happier as a guest and see no point in contributing any further.
