How decent? And booking through CX direct or elsewhere?
Booking through CX direct. I have actually been thinking about spending a couple of nights in Colombo just to get a taste of the place.

How decent? That is up to the individual and what they wanted to achieve out of the flights. Not sure they would be suitable for a status run but if you were going anyway then a decent alternative.

Are you booking Aus-hkg-Colombo in the one booking or booking Aus-HKG and then HKG-Colombo separately? I'm wondering if there's any price difference in having two bookings versus one.

Not sure you would need to check. I was looking at BKK-CMB but SIN-CMB is also available.'

I've been book a few CX fares lately and I can confirm that Oz-HKG-Other Asian Destination is regularly far cheaper than two separate bookings.

.

Colombo is not going to give you a taste of the place. Other than being close to the airport, Colombo provides very little for tourists- rest of the country is a great experience

And there seems to be a lot of infrastructure construction going on at the moment. ie roads
As well the express ways (no trucks or three wheelers) will actually open this year.

Try a trip to Horton Plains Park and World's End.
Or the old fort in Galle.
And beach holidays from $20/night to more than I care to spend in a week.

The CX biz class fares to almost anywhere (except perhaps HKG) exCMB are very worthwhile. And are generally available on the CX website with CMB/Sri Lanka as the issuing location. I use a TA since I want stopovers in SIN in both directions.

Happy wandering

How do they compare with the ex TPE runs (btw, for some reason it seems impossible to get deals ex TPE into Berlin, unless I've been very unlucky with the random dates I've put in to experiment with)

TPE is TPE and CMB is no TPE.

Still better value than most Australian business class airfares.

From CMB to BER/FRA going back to HKG would be more of a MR type exercise. For that route use exTPE or wait until UL / MH are OW partners. Or pay BA/QF's fares.

Last year when looking for USA fares CMB was a few hundred dollars more than TPE. But it allows my stopovers in SIN (TPE would not) and is about 2K miles more each way. Unless you want 5* hotels the stopover in CMB can be a lot less expensive (and interesting)

Anyone else been to a national park in Taiwan?

depending on what you want to achieve, ex CMB for me works much better than ex TPE. i like the free stopovers in sin / bkk
