Status Credits trans-Tasman?

I have just started a job which involves a fair bit of travelling and have come across an anomaly in relation to Qantas SCs.

If I book a Fully Flexible Fare with Qantas SYD - AKL - SYD for $1067(AUD), the fare is classed as Discount Economy and only 20 SCs are awarded each way.

However, if I book the same routes on the same days on Jetstar with a Starter Max fare, it costs $790 and as the Starter Max fares are treated as QF Full Economy for FF purposes, 40 SCs are awarded each way.

Double the SCs for $277 less? Am I missing something here?

That's exactly my point. But if you read the conditions on their website, that's exactly what they do. I only earned 20 SCs on an AKL - BNE fully flexible ticket three weeks ago, that's what started me looking into this!

On trans tasman full economy sc are only awarded on Y fares. All other booking classes are discount. This is the same for all international flights.

Look around - you can get it for $765.

The only issue that may be a problem is the ~6am departure from AKL.

The $1242 is the return cost on their website. Are you suggesting you can get it for $765 return or single?

That's exactly my point, but try booking it on the QF website. They have one column for Red e-Deal (discount economy), one for Fully Flexible (also discount economy) and one for Business. How does one book a Y class ticket on the Qantas website? Ironically, after some of the feedback I've received on here, I'm now wondering why I'd bother anyway!

See post #3 and 8. Yes you can get return SYD-AKL-SYD for $AUD750ish but the ex-AKL departure times are not pretty. If a true FF then you just suck it up and appreciate the SC's.

You need to look for dates when D (or I) class fares are available each way, rather than J.

The there are cheap fares available for ~$762 but with some date restrictions. I think you can't get the cheap fares if booking within the 2 weeks of your travel date. At certain times of year, for instance near Christmas, they are none of the cheap fares available.

Also a few times a year Qantas have sales on business fares transtasman for ~AU$600 one way. They have sales in NZ more often and even better they get down to NZ$650 one way again. So if you have multiple trips to NZ and you know the dates in advance. You can book return tickets that originate in NZ for about AU$1000. Still not as good as LAN price wise. But good that there are more options for times and destinations.

The advantage here it is half the required upgrade points for J or PE and puts you in the next fare category.

If you want to turn this into a habit, do a positioning flight and then purchase out of NZ for NZ$804 or so. With FX, you may cover the cost of a nights accommodation. .???
