Status run idea to take advantage of the Double Status Credits promotion

Hi guys.

I always notice there are red-e-deal fares SYD to CBR for $69 each way. I believe these earn 10SC on discount fares. As I'm a part of the double status credits promotion this would mean earning of 20SC.

In other words $3.45 per SC, which I don't think is too shabby at all.

If I completed five return trips this would equate to 200SC at a cost of $690.

Are there any glaring issues with my logic?

I've never undertaken a status run in Oz, however believe the double SC's promotion makes it very tempting indeed.

My intention is make WP+PG next year, which starts from 1st May for me. I've been WP+PG for three years running now, and the PG helps my wife especially on the likes of CX, JL and BA.

May and June could be very busy indeed...

I am doing this very leg today, $69 each way to get me to QP Silver before my new membership year starts from 30th April.
Unfortunately I was not targeted by the Double Status credits campaign, but only needed 20 more SC's to reach Silver anyway so didn't worry me too much.
My Goal for the upcoming membership year is to get to Gold, (or Platinum).

I already have a number of International trips planned so should be easy to attain.

$690 for 200 SC's is great.

$690 for 200 SC's is great, but you're better off purchasing a return Business class flight SYD-CBR @ approx $300 each way, total of $600+. 160 SC's return, if you include double SC's thats 320 SC's for ~$600.

SYD-CBR only earns 40SCs on Business, so a return trip only earns 80SCs. So even with the promotion, it will only earn 160SCs.

Personally, I've never seen SYD-CBR as low as $300, I've seen it at ~$345... Just make sure you choose the 737 services, or you won't even get a Business class.

For $750 you can get 220SC's during the double period and also have a spare trip with 80SCs thrown in to use later, spend $100 to get yourself to BNE, then do an international multicity BNE-MEL-SYD-NAN in J with the BNE-MEL -SYD on the same day as the trip to BNE and the SYD-NAN leg at a much later date. You can change the SYD-NAN date to a more suitable date later on. End result 320 SC's for $750, but you will need to come back from NAN at a cost.

Or a slightly more cost effective domestic run is actually CBR-SYD-BNE return. 160 SCs for about $1260 ($7.88/SC) whereas CBR-SYD-CBR (or the other way around) is $8.65/SC. With the double promotion that's 320.

(both rates assuming booking in D, if you book in J then it's more expensive obviously).

For the same money you can do BNE-MEL-NAN-SYD-MEL-BNE in J as one trip with no stop, will net you 340 SC or 680 SC with the double credits offer (booking through QF with QF codeshare) and you get back into BNE in time for a return to SYD same day around 24 hours after you left, and you do get duty free to help offset the costs.

As others have mentioned before, heading into Asia or the USA yields the best return on a $ for $ basis. If your going to spend over 1k, fly to USA for $608 with Delta, then do a few of these.

Unless you did two BNE-MEL-SYD.....NAN runs and left the NAN runs for later or expiraiton, still better value at 200SCs before the double up even if you miss the later overseas part.

If you are heading to LAX anyway then yes, otherwise costs of flights etc to get there need to be factored in obviously, the cheapest LAX flight would equal a NAN run (740SC's) alone with the current double up offer and take a lot longer to complete.

Wow. I might seriously do this twice. The first a status run, the second time an actual holiday with my wife.

I checked the Qantas website, and can see a BNE-SYD-NAN-SYD-BNE will cost me about $1300 all up, flying a combination of Air Pacific (I assume the partner / codeshare) and Qantas. How did you manage to get the NAN-SYD-MEL-BNE leg?

That's awesome - I was planning for end of May myself.

How did you manage to get the NAN-SYD-MEL-BNE leg? Did you use the regular booking method for flights in J between BNE and NAN, or use the multi-stop tool?

Took a while to work out with help from Markis.
There is a Red Eye option on Tuesday nights via MEL too.

It's worth double-checking but I would say definitely yes. Just as the Air Pacific flights to and from Nadi on the QF flight number have been promoted as a good earner, there's no reason why a QF codeshare on AA wouldn't be acceptable in the same way.

The T&Cs in my email read:

Eligible flights for this double Status credits offer are flights with a Qantas (QF) flight number where Status credits are normally earned.

Also, if you're in economy, make sure it's a fare class that would normally earn QF points as not all economy fares on AA do.

Going by the T&C's seems the codeshares for AA would work (except for deep discount whY), unfortunatly not a promotion target but for anyone wanting to head to the US, with the Instant upgrades a very quick way to achieve WP, IMHO

They'd work for deep discount WHY as well because of the QF flight number; although Qantas don't sell the First class fare buckets with QF codeshares on AA 2 class metal.
