Hi all,

I'm 105SC short of Gold, ending on 31st July. Qantas has offered 80k point to retain Gold or, alternately, I was going to use a double status points PNR to do a status run.

What do you guys think? I'm in Perth and can only do a domestic run at this stage as my passport is near expiry. I'm guessing 80k points is worth roughly $800. What flights can I take from Perth to do a run and is it worth it?

Thanks

Shame you can't go to Auckland, often cheaper than the east coast cities.

Just a heads up that I have had to manually chase up missing DSC for the significant majority of my eligible bookings (some more eligible than others). So you may face the 6-8week wait before they'll look into manually processing any that fail to automatically post.

Means you may drop to Silver for a period while you wait.

Waiting for passport renewal. :-(

I had a work trip that got cancelled and an Etihad flight to Europe that didn't give me a single status point, thus leaving me 105SC short.

BTW, is it normal for a discounted fare on Etihad to not give any Qantas status points?

Status runs from Perth are hard to do, the 80k offer may not be too bad. A bit frustrating I can't do international status runs.

I found that too, my last trip to SYD I had to ring up and chase my outbound leg's DSC.

Etihad does not generate any earn for Qantas Frequent Flyer. Depending on how long ago your flight was, you may be able to retrospectively claim to Velocity.

Unless you are mistaking Etihad for Emirates, EY isn’t a QFF partner.

To earn SC’s on Emirates, it needs to be booked using the QF code.

Can you do a domestic run (e.g. flying indirect). I would also consider if you have some flights in the coming 12 months to factor the decision of run v money. I like trying to upgrade with points, but how much would 80k mean for you.

My experience is that ex Perth at short notice, it may be struggle getting decent fares.

My bad, very blonde moment. I meant Qatar, not Etihad. Flew Qatar on discount economy, thought I'd get 50SC but got 0 instead. Is that normal?

Was looking at PER-CNS, via BRI or MEL but looking more expensive than $800 now, might as well burn 80k points instead.

If you have booked a fare bucket that isn’t listed here, you will indeed not earn on QFF.

Out of interest, what will SG status mean for you in the next year? IE what is the benefit to you? No matter how you gain it, if you do, it will cost you to get over the line.

80k points is worth $800 easily (this figure changes dependent how you redeem it) but could easily be worth double that and more if you used it for premium travel. But even at the lower end, will you get you ""$800" worth? That is $80 per flight if you do 10 in a year and ONLY if you fly economy. Worth almost nothing if you fly premium.

I believe so. A lot of partner flights do not provide any status credits (or FF points for that matter). For example, QF will only award points / SCs for fare classes KLMV and above, this means that nothing will be earned on flights booked into fare classes SNQTOWG.

These situations are not just limited to Qantas Frequent Flyer, many programs will not credit anything for discount economy airfares on partner airlines (I think some might not even credit points for some of their own discount economy flights!)

A fairly useful website is wheretocredit.com, although I am not sure how accurate or frequently updated it is.

I am in the exact same situation, 130SC's short, based in Perth, and cannot fly internationally (expired passport). Domestic status runs ex PER aren't very good value.

It took 11 days for my passport renewal to be processed and arrive in November last year - it's a simple process (although the $$$ keep increasing).

I would value 80K QFF at rather more than $800 (Try >$2000); however, assuming your "year" ends on July 31st it may be an easier way.

Sat 21 Jul PER-MEL-OOL departing 11:50pm arriving in OOL Sun 12:10pm

Sun 22 Jul OOL-SYD-PER departing 1:25pm arriving back in PER 7:40pm

Total cost $699 and no accommodation costs required and with double SC voucher that should be 120 SCs if I am not mistaken.

And that gives me a thought too. ;)

It may have been mentioned , but you could renew and have a new passport with in a week, how long do you have left to obtain these points ?

I was going to use a double status points PNR to do a status run.

with double SC voucher

I am a little confused, can someone explain what this means?

I have always been under the assumption that for each DSC promotion Qantas does, the flights need to be booked during the promotion.

Are you able to book flights during a DSC promotion, and then add flights to that same PNR retroactively? (eg. the new flights booked still earn DSC's because they were added to a PNR that was created during the promotion?)

They are so inconsistent. I was 120 sc short last year, but after 7 years of (earned) gold and half way to plat in some years (but never got close really), they comped me renewed Gold based on history. No points required. Guess it just depends on hiw valuable the lounge access is to you. Means a lot to me, esp outside Oz.

80K SC to me is worth a lot more than $800

My rule of thumb is 20-25SC per $1 if used as redemption towards an J flight international or domestic
Therefore 80k SC equivalent to about $3k value

Did you get your loyalty bonus of 50SC when you clicked over 500SC?
