re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

As posted, in this situation, you can only check-in by attending in person, at T-3 hrs...

JQ/QF have been quite strict with this of late.

Is this the case just for domestic segments? I'm booked on JQ29 later in the year. Is there a chance I could do web check in on the Jetstar site and get my BP issues at the service desk to avoid queueing with the masses?

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

Inless something has changed recently I don't think OLCI is an option for JQi flights.

Are there any other JQi flights to anywhere departing before JQ29 as check in may be open earlier for those flights?

There is olci for JQi flights, just not domestic sector of JQi flights.

JQ35 early check in

Having done a few of these, ( last weekend was the most recent), and struggled with all that fine wine and food beforehand ;)

I was able to confirm with checkin staff the following;

1/ If JQ counter is open for another JQ flight before 12 noon then you can check in and get a boarding pass

2/ It wont matter if you have baggage as they have a storage cart they are happy to tag your bags and place in until the baggage is accepted after 12 noon

3/ The staff say that this is only done at their SYD counter

The key to whether the counter is open works like this;

Load a one way flight on the JQ website from Sydney to every international destination in turn to see when the counter is open ( remember it opens 3 hours before sceduled departure for that flight and closes about 30-40 minutes before takeoff)

See if the counter will be open when you wish to go to teh airport for early checkin and F lounge

Will give it a go next time but any AFFers who have a JQ35 and want to try it let us know

I apologise for dredging up an old thread. Does anyone know if this advice still holds?

I'm looking at a short holiday to NZ on the current sale fares and would be arriving in Sydney (domestic) in the morning, but my JQ international flight doesn't leave until early evening. Ideally I'd like to check in earlier than T-3, so if the counters are open for another flight and I can get in on that it would be ideal.

It is likely I will have checked baggage if that makes a difference now (the post above suggests that it didn't last year).

Thank you!

I actually had to turn all my charm on last time I flew JQ from MEL and arrived early. It tool quite some convincing, and I am glad I didn't have checked luggage as I think that would have been a deal breaker.

Thank you JessicaTam. After your message I checked Qantas prices against JQ and was pleasantly surprised that the difference wasn't great, especially considering how much easier it will be (better flight times, bags checked through, access to QF inter-terminal transfer, and no hassle checking in for the entire journey many hours early when I check in for my BNE -> SYD flight). So I decided to go all QF instead.

I'm really looking forward to my trip even though it will be only a few days in length. I will experience the QF F lounge for the first time -- maybe the last, since I'm not yet sure if I'll requalify for WP, fly on EK for the first time, and fly on a 777 for the first time as well! Fingers crossed that I won't be disappointed by any of them. :)

So does that mean there will be a trip report? :)

Hmm. I hadn't even thought of that. :)

It's still a few months off, but I'll try to remember.

The brief reviews of 777 3/4/3 layout in EK Y on seatguru are almost unanimously negative, whereas opinions of J seem to be pretty positive. For such a short international flight I'm sure I'll be wide-eyed enough about the new plane to cope with any discomfort in Y, but my fingers are definitely crossed that someone in CHC is nice to me. :)

An angled flat 2-3-2 J gets positive reviews?! It's very outdated

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

IME there little wrong with angled lie flat, I sleep just as well on Skybed Mk i and EK 2-3-2 as I do on Skybed mk 2, VA, NZ or EY business (777) and certainly better than the BA "flexibed".

Any of those are better than an economy seat.

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

Has anyone had any recent experience with checking in early with luggage in SYD?
In particular flying on JQ37 (1725 departure), eg. when JQ203 is open (1145 departure), going to the desk before that time and dropping bags etc?

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

Was just researching flights to/from HNL ex BNE and noticed that it's possible on a Saturday to catch JQ58 BNE/SYD 0855/1130 then JQ3 SYD/HNL 1745/0625 so in theory you should be able to checkin all the way through at BNE Intl which opens 3 hours prior at 0555 so you would clear customs in BNE as SYD would just be classed as an international transit.

JQ58 ops BNE/SYD on Sat & Mon but not sure if JQ3 ops SYD/HNL on a Monday.

If you flew JQ dom BNE/SYD your bags would only be checked as far as SYD then you'd need to lug your baggage around to the SYD Intl terminal then wait until 3 hours prior when check in opens at 1445.

Could
you connect on to QF3 instead, thereby giving at least Platinum passengers the opportunity to check-in any time that day?

Do you mean JQ58 to QF3? Just did a dummy classic award booking via QF site using the multi city tool and you could either book JQ58 connecting to JQ3 or QF3 on the same booking. I believe even if you had a separate pnrs on JQ58 & QF3 (booked via respective airline websites) the JQi will through check to QF or any other airline they have an interline agreement with. I don't believe they have the rule about both flights having to be in the same pnr. WP pax wouldn't need to checkin in SYD as JQi would already have checked them in so they should already have their QF3 boarding pass issued in BNE. At the very least bags could be checked through and they could just get the QF3 boarding pass in the SYD FLounge as they would be in transit airside due to them having cleared customs in BNE and no orange 'D' sticker required.

If going on JQ dom anywherre within Australia on flights departing from domestic terminals it is point to point checkin only so you would need to claim luggage and make your way around to the international terminal and checkin again. QF have all day checkin at SYD so no big deal but JQi only open checkin 3 hours prior to departure.

re: Strategy to get "Early" JQ check-in for International

I would still connect to QF3. I always worry about these JQ "international" dom flights being massively delayed or cancelled, and JQ would send you back to their dom flights and you're stuck with the dom-int transfer.

If the JQi flight was massively delayed then tell JQ to put you on a QF dom flight so your bags can be through checked & you can get both boarding passes.

You don't want to be switched to a JQd flight BNE/SYD as bags will only be checked to SYD then you have to lug them around to intl and checkin all over again.

If a JQ dom flight is available, would they be willing to put you on a QF dom flight? I could be wrong but I would imagine you would need to shift mountains for them to put you on QF dom instead of JQ dom.

I guess it would depend if there was a JQd flight around that time however having an international connection may carry some weight in that you could tell them that had you been on the original JQi flight BNE/SYD you could've been through checked which is why you selected that flight to begin with (right? :-) )whereas on a JQd flight you can't be. You'd probably need to politely stress that fact so the penny drops.

JQ often put pax on QF flights eg BNE/SYD when they cancel one of their own flights however they don't have as high a frequency of flights as QF or VA so there may not be another JQd flight for a while whereas if JQ58 was massively delayed or cancelled there may be a JQd flight not far off.
