Strategy to obtain US Amex

Applying online should be pretty straightforward to get approved via GT. Not sure if anyone here has tried to apply for a GT via phone. Most people haven’t had issues getting approved with applying using a MyUS address via GT. If not, there are other mail forwarders that should work.

Why would anyone apply by phone? 🤷‍♂️ Am I missing something?

For the community's reference...I get this error when I tried to apply online. It might just be a bug on my end but unfortunately I had to take the phone route. I've scanned this thread and it appears someone else also had the same problem where MyUS address was flagged as a mail forwarding service. It worked on their 2nd attempt.

See Post #2892 (Strategy to obtain US Amex).

Probably just my bad luck!

Applied for the Gold biz bang on two weeks ago. Got asked for identification documents a week in. Submitted it and let it sit for a week or so. Called today, apparently there was a fraud hold on the application for security purposes. CSO confirmed it was me with some questions, put it through and got approved on the spot. Also confirmed I had the 150k offer attached to application.

Applied for my first GT (Amex Green) this morning. Got the usual can we speak to you message. Gave Amex a call, verbally confirmed my name and address, they said they will let me know the decision in 24-72 business hours. Is this common or should I be worried? 😄 I don't have a bank statement with US address in case they ask for address verification!

Yeah usually a 24-28 hour callback period but it could go either way from there. Asked for my address and thankfully the US WISE statement was enough. From recent DPs tho they havent accepted it. Once you get your first US card with Amex though it has been extremely easy since.

Not sure how others found it, but Amex claims if SSN isn’t provided for additional cardholders it will be closed in 60 days

Did you happen to apply for the additional card and get away without an SSN/ITIN? (or does anyone else have recent datapoints?)

Just received an offer on my Surpass this morning?

Add an Additional Card Member to your Hilton Honors American Express Card account and earn 5,000 Hilton Honors Points after an Additional Card Member spends $1,000 in purchases on their Card in the first 6 months of Card Membership. You can earn this offer up to four times, for a maximum of 20,000 Hilton Honors Points. Plus, there’s no annual fee for Additional Cards. Offer ends 5/15/2024.1

Option to provide ssn or pasport . My experience was long ago .

You can upload passport, I did it via live chat.

This was back in November 2023.
Interesting. I was looking at additional cards for my US Amex Gold and it said that if an SSN was not provided for the additional card holder within 6mths (I think, could have been three), they'd auto cancel the card.

So you're saying that they will accept a passport? Does it need to be notarised?

Don’t worry too much about it . Just chat or call and provide passport f details .

I just got ITIN last month.
I am thinking applying for my 1st Amex Business Marriott Bevy, are they harder for approval vs personal card? Any suggestion or anything to look out for eg., send in documents etc.....

Currently DP, I have
Amex Platinum (opened 05/2023) via GT
Amex Hilton Surpass (opened 11/2023) via GT
Capital One (opened 02/2024) via ITIN

Thanks

Hi guys, I am travelling to LA next week for a couple of days.. last minute.

I am thinking I should open a few bank accounts whilst I am there as I've read here that you can only open some in person and also this may help getting credit cards down the line?

Which banks do you recommend I open accounts with and what info/docs will I need to open them? I am assuming passport and drivers license at a minimum?

Should I print and bring a proof an address i.e. a statement from my AMEX, HSBC, C1 accounts?

Is there anything else I should do whilst in the states to further my credit card churning ambitions?

TIA

Ok so an update on this. I went to LA last week for a few days. Pre-arranged appointments at Wells Fargo, Chase and BOFA to setup checking accounts.

Successfully opened WF and Chase checking accounts, just need to deposit money to avoid fees. WF required a $25 deposit there and then where as chase did not.

I needed to provide proof of US address (credit card statement or bank account statement), passport, drivers license and my SSN.

I actually never made it to the BOFA appointment unfortunately as something else got in the way. but overall pretty easy experience just takes a bit of time, id allow 1 hour per bank appointment. Hopefully not having the BOFA account wont hurt me too much down the line...

Side note I went to the LA Lakers V Clippers game in staples centre, and it was phenomenal..

I just wonder if my US address is in Texas, Can I go to branch in LA or SFO?

BoA are good for Alaska biz cards (put $5K in a checking account, wait 1 month, apply for 3 Alaska biz cards in 3 different browsers at the exact same time and voila), but not much else so I wouldn't worry. Main thing is to have one checking account that works.
