Strategy to obtain US Amex

Can you explain exactly how you did this ? I have yet to be able to actually speak to a ‘relationship manager’ via their call centre
Applied online and was basically approved in a day or so due to my premier accounts in oz and uk. Received an email asking what the account was required for and I replied with "to facilitate potential investments"

I was hoping AUS address works for HSBC Premier US card, is this not the case?
Fine for checking account

However I found with credit card that it works as mailing address but my UK address was not accepted as residential address (I was actually initially declined for this reason but managed to overturn after updating my address on file). So used myus address as residential and uk address as mailing then was approved.

Did you apply as a new account from the us hsbc site ?
And if so, did you say you were moving to the US ?
And did you give them a US address ?

1) Yes
2) No, just said I was investing from memory
3) No, used UK addresses

Did they ask for proof of your premier status as part of that online application ?

I essentially answered the same as you (but put reason as traveling regularly for work), and received a rejection email a few minutes after completing the application.

Do you remember if you said you would be transferring a large amount across ? I think I put something small like $5k as the initial deposit, and said the annual amount would be under $100k…

They didn't ask for proof but I believe there is a central international database they look you up in. Do you have premier already?

Definitely didn't say I would be depositing large amounts

Yes I have premier.

It did stew on my passport verification for a long time then say it couldn’t do it at the moment before proceeding with the rest of the application

But if that was the issue I would have thought they would simply email to ask for ID verification rather than just rejecting…

But in all seriousness, this card seems like a tremendous earner. Currency Fluctuations dont matter because of the 10 point guarantee. Even if you dont abuse the system, and you pay a 3% currency fee, it still sounds good? You can legitimately go and buy a AU$1.03 whatever garbo junk thing at colesworth per day and get 10 Krisflyer miles etc.
I wouldn't burn my relationship with Citi over such small amounts.

Their cards can be very valuable if you know how to use them. Eg I earn AA EXP (oneworld emerald) for free for P2 using the Citi AA cards.

I actually had an issue with passport verification too, what happened was my browser had cookies blocked or something so it didn't work, but when I copied the link to another browser it worked. If you try to apply again maybe this might help?

All else with HSBC failing, it looks like you can get some sort of bank account with MAZA who also do your ITIN. Haven't investigates myself what type it is but I guess it can't hurt to look

I currently have us mobile number from skype, and unable to receive sms from chase. I wonder if this would affect my application, anyone could suggest a mobile provider that can receive the sms please.
I called chase today to follow up on my application, same feedback as per yesterday (we have received your documents, and you application has been sent to next department for further review, you will get notified by mail within 1-2 wks). The only additional info is that today's rep confirmed yesterday's rep did not forward my application to next department for further review (not as she promised).🤣😂

Hi all,

This thread has been great! Just wanted to provide some info on my own journey for others as it may be useful:
  1. Massive points/card churner in oz, would consider myself expert level
  2. Moved to UK a little while ago, would say I am now a similar level in terms of knowing the market and maximising points
  3. Discovered this thread a few weeks ago and have made this my current points project. Process so far:
    1. Opened a HSBC US checking account (already premier with accounts globally as part of my move to the UK)
    2. Got a MyUS address and VOIP number (both basically free)
    3. Applied for a HSBC US Premier Credit Card (which was approved using UK payslips and bank statement with MyUS address)
    4. Applied for an ITIN through Maza for US $5/m, has been successfully submitted to the IRS
    5. Once ITIN is received will apply for first US Amex (if MyUS address doesnt work, I have a friend in the US who I will use their address)
    6. Once FICO score is decent will apply for Citi AAdvantage Card and aim to get Oneworld Emerald Status through spending 125k US$ a year as I regularly fly Oneworld and this won't be too hard for me to do. However will work out the cost benefit with the fx rates etc so maybe not.
If anyone has any questions (or suggestions/tips!) let me know :)
Did you use android or iPhone for address location verification ?

For those new to chase, don't go too hard on the biz card. I put in a 3k transaction and had a small one in Bora bora (on holiday) and they closed all my accounts.

Need to contact them after 30 days so go small 😞
Oh no, amex seems to be fairly good with this. Used charge card for 20k transaction back in Jun, no issues.
