Strategy to obtain US Amex

This is my experience about 3 weeks ago:

ohh that's very interesting, so you didn't need to upload any docs either.

did you receive a similar email saying they had made a decision then as well?

Only an email to call them...never uploaded anything!

So I had to wait til midnight Sydney time to call them (8 am Eastern time)...got through and the agent said he couldn't see an issue with the application but he needed the Global Transfer team to push it through but they only opened an hour later...called back at 1am Sydney time and whilst I was on hold, the Global team approved it with a ridiculously high credit limit (I guess I can reduce it later). The only Qs I got asked were my year of birth, and to confirm my US address (relative's) and to confirm the spelling of my name.

Despite opening an US HSBC Premium account, and waiting a month to get a statement with my US address on it, I never got asked to provide evidence of a US address or for that matter my US phone number (only created a few hours ago) so just a FYI...

Q is do I keep my HSBC acct open? I can always use my Amex statement with US address I guess if I ever apply for another card. ;)

I want to thank the many posters here who have given advice on this thread as I would have had no idea how to get a US Amex credit card!
You usually can only use a checking / savings account statement to evidence address .

Hoping for some P2 related advice here…

I referred my wife for an Aus Plat around 6 months ago while there was a 275k referral.

I don’t want to pay almost $3k in annual fees for 2 platinums, but now have a fair chunk of Amex MR ‘stranded’ in her account.

I had originally planned for her to GT into the fee free US Amex, then move her points to an airline with family pooling.

A few months ago Amex removed the fee free MR card for new applications.

She has no ITIN at this point.

Is the easiest option to suck up the $150usd af for a Green for one year for her ?

Is it possible to do your first GT into a business card ? (I think there is a fee free MR card there)
Can’t get a biz card without ITIN

how did you find out you were approved was it over the phone?

Did you get any kind of welcome pack?

I'm tempted just to wait for them to send out a letter, too difficult to get the wife to call. Would think if they reject it would most likely be because we did a PMB instead of APT or Suite

I was put on hold whilst they spoke to Global transfer team...after 5 minutes, agent came back and said I was approved. 2 or 3 days later received card and welcome pack at my relative's US address who subsequently FedExd it to me in Sydney :)

awesome, thankyou. Will wait and see if the letter is posted. hopefully it comes with a welcome pack and not a declined.

ohh really, but the email actually says "We've finished reviewing your application" and if we don't access via the link they will post. doesn't sound like it's to upload passport.

No ITIN first GT
Just ring them with the reference and ask for global card relationship team. They will just want confirm name. May make you do 3 way call with bank

Ok it’s been a while since I did my first GT but from memory had to do the phone call and then do a video notary cam to prove identity

I don’t think it would hurt to call back on the GT phone line and ask how to access link without ITIN. If someone more recent has done a new GT they may be able to contribute

For Personal Card apply by phone: Call 877-621-2639, available Monday - Sunday from 8:00 - 23:00 (EST).
I also think from memory you can put 9 zeros in if you didn’t enter an SSN/ITIN

It won’t. In theory your application is declined but can be reactivated and approved once you confirm what they want. Just call. All P2 has to remember is she recently moved to US

Most likely declined, unfortunately. Waiting for the letter will not progress anything.
In my experience they decline and letter says as much but also states if you can provide the info we can reactivate the application and approve. Happened on all 4 of mine

Strange that I didn't get ask for any documents....even though I had all of them prepared!

Just to clarify, we received the email that kpc referenced, she called up and was verified by confirming DOB and address. Lady said she needs to upload docs and we would be sent an email with the link to do this. we thanked her and hung up.

shortly after we received the email "we've finished reviewing your application" rather than an email with link to upload any docs.

are saying this is normal to need to call twice to upload the docs?

Ah ok. Thats easy then. If you were able to get in it would just have the link. Upload your passport and bank statement here with the ref number and you should be right : https://docuploadonline.americanexp...owId=authentication_US&_flowExecutionKey=e3s1

Same happened to me before and I never received the email. I called again and they told me to upload the docs in the link provided by @djchuckles above.

Just use that and upload what they requested. Wait a few days and if no response, wait a few more days or call to follow up about the docs if you are eager.

You’d probably be ok with ones here. But many (like this TCN one), themselves block international cards
Oh, it’s local is it? Thanks, I’d never heard of them. I had thought that they may be USA-based.

Yes, Oz gift card purchases from WW, Coles, etc, have always gone okay for me, due to lack of reporting detail to Amex USA (doesn’t give a breakdown of the item purchased).

One of the two/three big local companies. TCN produce the Him, Her etc cards you see in ColesWorth. The other big ones are BHN and One4All I think
