Successful CSM requests

Having recently attained SG for the first time and heading to WP, I now get a CSM greeting me at some point during the flight and asking me to let them know if there is anything I need.

Some are seemingly less sincere than others, just reading off a printout or tablet. To date I've not asked for anything, with the only benefit being a fast track pass through immigration thrust in my direction.

What successful requests have folks had in the past? Better seating? Better food? Better booze? Better amenity kits?

I asked for a pillow in row 4 on a SYD-AKL flight and even took it away with me so I could use it to sleep overnight at the airport before my AKL-BNE flight early the next morning...

A couple of worrying issues there .....

1. There are about 50 flights from Sydney to Brisbane each day
2. What did you do with the pillow at the end of the trip?

My experience lately is that Qantas are a bit random when it comes to on-board greetings. 50-50 to get a greeting, 50-50 on the sincerity index, and I never ask for anything. As a perennial "by the skin of my teeth" SG, I feel a bit of a fraud being lumped in with the real elites.

But Emirates ALWAYS greet me before takeoff, and ALWAYS organise a row of 4 or 3 so I can get some sleep, no questions asked.

I quite like that.

I found quite the opposite with Qantas being more sincere than Emirates on recent flights.

When do they organize the spare seats?

I have a bit of a system
- changing seats to an empty row in the days leading up to the flight
- moving if needed on checkin
- confirming when entering the lounge
- confirming on exiting the lounge

Generally works ok if the flight is not too heavily booked.

My WP colleague seems to get ghost seats blocked around him
 
When I was flying more regularly I often asked for a magazine that wasn't scuffed (if I forgot to pick one up in the lounge) as I kept a collection of them at home. On one occasion, this resulted in a pretty ordinary magazine being given to me, and it wasn't until a few hours later that it clicked to them I collected them and wanted a nice copy for at home, which they got for me. By that stage I was stood in the galley knocking back G&T's and was offered leftovers (unused I would think) from F. I declined and stuck with the cheap alcohol.

Never been bold enough to ask for anything more premium, though I suppose I often ask for Baileys on a long haul in Y and usually get the answer that its only for premium cabins but they'll send some down anyway. I recall another elite near me asked for an eye mask so he could sleep. He probably got a pillow as well.

1. But none long enough to have a sleep with a pillow...
2. The pillow followed me back on my return flight in row 4 the next morning but I left it behind on arrival.
 
I gnerally ask for something when encountering "Is there anything I can do for you, just ask.".

Over the years, these have included mainly amenity kits "if spare" or a glass of "pointy end bubbles".
 
This is such a nice touch. I remember vividly one flight to Sydney I think from LAX I dropped my lip gloss as soon as I got to my seat and couldn't find it. Facing a 15 hour flight without my addiction I started to freak out a bit which was when they came to ask me if they could do anything. I made mention I rarely ask for anything but explained the situation and she could see I was upset so bought me some from a spare amenities kit from business. I don't recall specifically asking for anything else on any other flights. I just keep that offer up my sleeve for the next random situation I find myself in where I really need their help and I find myself in whY.

I hear there is a new line on the way to save money. "if there is anything else I can do for you don't ask" Lol

Losing my lip balm on a flight is one of my worst nightmares. Thank goodnesss for a spare amenity kit!

We dont usually ask for anything, but if offered will say yes to a Baileys or Champagne. We also get the occasional J dessert though we turned down cheese plates after a long lunch in the F lounge. Have definitely collected a few amenity kits while in Y too.
 
We've scored a few pairs of PJs, a stint in the A380 lounge and pointy end whisky (wife's birthday).

Definitely always ask in an equivalent way to "if spare". It's not expected, but if no animals or children are harmed then all good.

Hmmm, usually I can't find anything else that I would like (lip balm just ain't my thing :D) - so next time I might say: "Can you please go down to whY and shout this message: 'Is there a bloke named Serfty down here? If so, there's some bloke up the front who wants us to give you an amenity kit and as many glasses of champagne that you would like.'" :D:D:p

ahh, geeee thanksssss ... nice to know you are thinking of those who occasionally experience the delights of main cabin travel ... :D
 
Have to say I’m a bit shocked to hear SG’s get the ‘let me know if there’s anything you need’ offer. I am P1 and Have not had any such offer in the past year when flying Y except twice after we have already started our descent - so purely a token gesture.

In the past have asked for and received:
- a glass of juice (rather than plastic cup)
- J wine on flights that don’t give free wine to Y.
- On one occasion asked to be moved from a full row 4 on a 737 to another Y seat with a shadow or empty row - the lovely Jetconnect CSM instead put me in J. Request was made in advance, not upon invitation to ‘let her know...’

Never asked for J food (wouldn’t want to deny J pax or the crew) nor F booze, though was once proactively offered F whiskey in J.
 
The offer seems to be reducing in frequency and sincerity in my experience. However, on one recent flight in PE when I asked for premium booze from J it was cheerfully delivered along with several subsequent offers of top ups, which I gratefully accepted. It seems to depend on the enthusiasm of the CSM on the flight.
 
In Y as a QF WP the CSM has offered me J headset, if i wanted any alcohol from J.
Things i havent dared ask for but always wanted
- Amenity kit
- PJ's to take with me.
- Extra express cards.

Although in J i have asked for additional PJ's a few times and got them from the CSM.

This seems very QF focused but CX have always been great at greeting me and and consistently seeing if there is anything i need.
Taking my meal order when sitting right at the back to ensure i got what i wanted.
 
I usually ask and receive the following:
  • Eye mask (when in economy)
  • Pen to complete the incoming passenger card.
As a result I have quite a few Qantas pens. Really really liked the feel of the older grey ones, but starting to enjoy the new red ones.

As a gin lover, the only decent drink is on the ground in the First Class Lounge, so never asked for a 'premium' drink.

Would like to ask for an amenity kit when in economy (as it would have a eye mask in it, plus a work colleague's daughter collects them), however it feels a little wrong and entitled.
