Successful QF 'Bid Now Upgrades' data thread

Successful bid ADL-MEL from Red-e-deal to J for 3,000 points plus $100.

Not a good value, I know, but felt like spoiling myself after a too early and too long JQ flight BNE-ADL.

Excuse my ignorance but do you actually receive an email invite for this or do you have to go into QF website to request, etc? I've never received any email and am just wondering how it works. Thanks.

They send you out a targeted email offering you the chance to bid for the upgrade. Not sure how it is targeted, I've received one this year from 6 flights.

Got an offer for my MEL-LAX flight this Saturday. Minimum 5000 points with a range of dollars from $870 - $2965. If I up the points to 64000 then the dollars is $405 to $2505. I won't be bidding as I've already paid for an exit row seat on this flight. I've put in a classic upgrade request for the flight back to either business or PE so hopefully that comes through.

Thanks, now I know but still couldn't figure out why not one single invite even when I fly weekly.

Is the offer you received for Y to PE or from Y to J ?

Given a flight upgrade award is 72,000 for Y to J, 64,000+cash seems a lot. Wouldn't you just hand over 72,000 points and no cash?

This makes me think that "bid-now-upgrades" are prioritised ahead of "flight upgrade awards": you've got an offer at about T-170 for a BNU, but would have to wait till T-24 to be offered a FUA (given you're PS).

At the other end though (assume) $850 base fare + 5000 points + $870 = $1620 + 5000 points for potential $4k business fare. Is that good value? My gut feeling is min. points plus min. cash might be worthwhile, as based on the above the ~$400 difference for 59000 values the points at around toaster levels. I'm just a simple engineer though so my logic may be flawed.

Problem is a lack of data at our end I think. Would a bid now upgrade be processed above an award upgrade?

edit: Just realised there has been a lot of debate on the value of these upgrades (mostly my fault) JessicaTam should we have a new thread?

Tangential question: if you accept the BNU offer, do they refund your $180 for your Y seat selection?

I've had a 2 pax booking bid now upgrade accepted lhr->mel so they definitely happen. QF are quite clear that a bid is accepted at their descretion and since when did auctions start at the reserve? It must be a great source of customer behaviour analysis to see what people actually offer, and when push comes to shove there's ultimately an easy way to ensure you get that J seat. ..

Downgraded I hope your moniker isn't a self fulfilling prophecy.

Alas, it is already fulfilled (that's why i chose it). Happy to say QF makes up for some of the shortfalls of corporate travel policy. Could do better though.

With many of the airlines it simply comes down to how the fare was booked.

For you to receive an email then Q has to have your email address. If you've gone via an online site then quite often, despite you dealing with the site by email - the site does not log your email address into the booking with the airline.

I always ring the airline directly after I've booked an online flight and received a confirmation from the booking site. Probably more than 3 out of 4 times they airline has not been given my email address.

So, they then add it into the booking and I receive upgrade offers. Worked like a charm for the last few years across VA and EY especially.

I appreciate the thought, but as I don't have to wade through posts to find the 'data points' I am not overly fussed.

The joys of a self propagating spreadsheet!

Another offer for my flight next Wednesday SYD-BNE. Didn't bid as it looks like the client will be 'postponing' the project. The joys of consulting.

If you add your FF number to the booking isn't that enough for QF to connect your email address?
