Suggestions for F/J options EUR to AUS

There's also Shanghai, Beijing, and other cities in China.

If you include 1 stop from Asia, Qatar opens up a range of additional destinations (and origins).

Ah good point, I had previous horrendous experiences transiting through China so I tend to automatically delete it from my eyes!

I used BUD-HEL-NRT-BNE to get my latest award home from EU.

We are in a similar boat with 500K AA points, 100K VA points and 180K QF points and planning a trip to Europe in 2016. I think a good option is to use EY to the Middle East (45K or 60K) and then use VA or QF points for the much shorter distance based award into Europe. QF opens the option of EK flights too. Taxes seem to be more reasonable with this option too - just a thought!

Good idea using QF points for EK flights Europe to Dubai. I just searched Stockholm - Dubai in J, it came to 50k plus 214 pounds, so taxes weren't that cheap.

I pretty much exclusively use QFFP to visit family in MEL bc I see that as the best value use for them. When you start going internationally in premium cabins, the value just doesn't compare vs other programs. So I'm loathe to use them in that way. Not to mention the outrageous taxes QF like to charge.

Cathay or Cathay/QF via HKG tickets as one award and JAL or JAL/QF does too via either NRT or HND. If looking to avoid BA though on the way home look for JAL flights from FRA or CDG (or HEL but I think that might be a JAL plane with angle flat seats in J?)

I decided on flights to Europe next year, although in J, not F. I booked QF MEL - HK, then CX HK - LHR (for 60k AA). Then for my return, I have booked EY AUH - SYD (45k AA), and will decide on a flight from Europe to AUH once I know where approx I am travelling to.

You should keep an eye out for EY F options opening up closer to your return date for only a few incremental points.

There seems to be some F seats available on the a380 from AUH to LHR. I had planned on going J on this sector, but may decide on F for this short flight as I've never been F before.

Change 'may' to 'did'. You won't regret it.

...Apart from it maybe setting expectations too high for many years going forward! haha

edit: Actually for fewer miles, 80k, instead of 85K (45K F, 40k J), I can get QF F FLH to MEL.

Everything else being equal, would people suggest QF F from LHR to MEL or EY F from LHR - AUH, then EY J from AUH - SYD? (yes first world problem I know!)

QF A380 F LHR-DXB-MEL or
EY A380 F LHR-AUH & EY 77W F AUH-SYD & QF/VA J SYD-MEL.

What would you choose?

Depends a lot on how you value your time, but there are few more pleasant ways to get from LHR to MEL than the first option.

Using AA miles, I can only think of CX. Any others particularly in mind?

BA F via SIN as long as you like the old faithful 747 and a bit of 777. When JL introduces the 777-300 you could also fly F to LHR via Tokyo.

Thanks.
I must say, I've never done BA F 747-style. Actually, never flown a 747 at all. I can't say I was impressed by BA 77W F. CX J is just about on par IMO.
I enjoyed JL J the one time I've flown it and look forward to try JL F. That said, I prefer fully enclosed (or at least partially enclosed) suites, and that aspect seems to be a let down of JL F. 1A in CX F on a 77W with 1-1-1 so you don't have a neighbour or seats in front of you would be hard to beat without being on an A380!

I think 2A is better on the CX 777 - the bulkhead isn't right in your face, so there more of a sense of 'space', and 1A is too close to the galley/WC area. 2A is more private in that there is no one to walk past you to the WC.

That's true I guess. I've never tried 2A before. Can you see any part of the person in 1A from 2A?

QF A380 F LHR-DXB-MEL or
EY A380 F LHR-AUH & EY 77W F AUH-SYD & QF/VA J SYD-MEL.

What would you choose?

QF hands down.
Would only go EY if:
1/ The dedicated F lounge at T3 AUH was ready, and
2/ Apartments were available all the way LHR-AUH-SYD
