Suggestions for Tokyo Hotels

Thanks every one for the suggestions. I mustn't have searched hard enough, if there is stuff in google

Regarding my mobility problems. Basically I lock up if made to stand or sit for long periods of time. I can walk normally otherwise once everything is working properly. But getting off public transport can be difficult if I'm not warmed up. Just given the picture I have of jamming people into tokyo subway trains I imagine that my be something I should avoid (also had a bit of an issue on a crowded ferry in venice), especially if I want to get to a conference session on time.

Anywya, thanks for the ideas I'll give it some more work.

I would suggest studying the Tokyo subway map and pick somewhere close to a Toei line station.Just easier sticking to the one companies lines.Shiodome that has been mentioned is an easy station to access and there are a few upmarket hotels with direct access to it.It meets the Shinjuku line at Morishi*a and if memory serves me correctly it is a simple up and down stairs to connect-there may be a lift but unsure.
Most of the day the subways are not jam packed.Certainly in your case the travel on the Shinjuku line would be opposite to the hordes ie they will be travelling inwards in the morning you will be going out.Same for the Oedo line and Shiodome if you picked there as it is an office area and so everyone coming into Shiodome in the morning.

I'm going there for a conference and I'm having great trouble finding any hotels near the conference venue, which is the Tower Hall Funabori

Recommend you check with the confernce organisers who will have recommended discount hotels.

Alternatively, they may have appointed a local travel agency. JTB (The Japanese Government owned agency would be the likely appointment)

Another option is to ring JTB in Australia and somebody will be able to advise options in close proximity to the venue and more importantly access from the airport.

Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Tripadvisor and Google work well together and have a few options, with some reviews as well:

Thanks everyone. amazing quick and useful information. :D

I've been searching on and off for about 4 months and haven't found anything near as useful.

I did also ask the organising committee about hotels towards the end of last year, the best they offered me was Japanican.com. But checking back on their website last night and there is now 2 hotels listed.

Thanks

Nobody gets to hear about my favorite Tokyo hotel because I don't want it to get booked out..! Sorry folks but I found a goodie (not mentioned anywhere here) and I intend to keep it to myself.

Of those mentioned here... Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku gets my vote. Can be had for around 10000 Yen/night and less if you shop ahead and pick good dates.

Just a teaser... I found something much like the Sunroute but typically costs only 7000 yen/night, or less... Usually I'm the only gaijin at the place... Cleaner than the Sunroute, newer, and basically same amenities.

Why I'm being stingy... years ago I reviewed and posted what I think was the first English language review for Katsutaro Annex in Yanaka/Sendagi... Now it's virtually impossible to get a booking there... I'm not making that mistake again...!

Sorry guys...!

Good luck..!

OK here is another clue for finding hidden gem hotels in Tokyo... take a close look at the hotels that have NO REVIEWS posted on the major travel sites... think about that for a minute.

Some are so new, no reviews yet. Have stayed at quite a few 2009/2010 vintage hotels lately and they are all great value, clean, everything works, internet, refrigerators, yadda yadda...

Some are a bit older but have to this point been listed only on Japanese language aggregator sites and/or don't have English web sites of their own. You would be really surprised just how many hotels there are in Tokyo in this category.

If you are paying more than 10000 yen per night for a Tokyo hotel room then IMHO you are paying too much. My sweet spot is 5000-7000 yen/night. Excellent deals in this range. Please note, however, that I'm only in the room to sleep and shower and at all other times I'm out and about... I never eat at the hotels.
