SYD J International Lounge [not good]

Re: SYD J International Lounge [- not good]

In part it's to do with flight schedules, there are certainly peak and non peak times, but the lounge is also very small. I would guess it's got the same capacity as some smaller capital city airport QP's, but unlike the smaller cities it serves some very large aircraft in one of Australia's main entry points.

Certainly in the morning (worse during school holiday periods) you will have several A330 flights departing for Asia and at the same time the A380 flying to LAX and HKG - all sold out flights and all within 90 mins of each other.

Re: SYD J Lounge

fly out of BNE, it is a very nice , clean and modern lounge with great views

except that I have to walk through the riff raff in the Qp to get to the plane. The horror :/

Re: SYD J Lounge

IF SYD airport wanted to spend $, it could easily build upwards, IF it can't spread outwards.
A few months back, for quite a while, there was a very high rise crane working at SYD T1.
Not sure what work was done at that time.
While its not feasible to close an airport, or even part of it, with money, anything can be done.
Look at ADL int terminal, it still has the layout of the former, ie, SQ lounge is still in the basement etc, but everything inside is new.
Even MEL int built is new glass int terminal about 5/6 years ago.

Re: SYD J Lounge

The state of the lounge has been a known issue for many years and QF know about it and definitely since I dropped down from WP. However QF in their propaganda dress it up especially the food offering, take a look at their Youtube video of their International Lounges.
I personally do not mind the décor but the food is below average.
If travelling by myself when the EK lounge is open I go straight there now. If with family we have to put up with the QF lounge. Unfortunately our other option is the NZ lounge, which is modern and serves much better food however it too is horrendously overcrowded, cannot get seats when we travel while QF lounge is not crowded at all in the late afternoon.
Oh how I miss the First Lounge.

Re: SYD J Lounge

Oh how I miss the First Lounge.

As a lucky regular at the F lounge the yawning gap between the two lounges is beyond absurd.

The differences I can think of - obvious perhaps but need to be listed;

Lounge welcome
Food selection
Food quality
Cleanliness
Drink selection
Alcoholic brand quality
Decor
Design
Natural lighting
View
Number of seats
Quality of seating
Seperate seating areas depending on need
Service
Spa
Toilets
Shower suites
Magazine selection
Feeling when leaving (satisfaction - F lounge / relief - J lounge!)

Out of this list, I would say the outside view, the number of seats and just the general look of the place, it's pretty visually uninspiring.

Re: SYD J Lounge

Given the rebuild of PER and BNE (and LHR internationally) lounges you would think that a new SYD lounge would be on the cards soon.

Wouldn't be as easy I would guess as the other rebuilds as Sydney is obviously much larger, traffic-wise

Re: SYD J International Lounge [- not good]

I visited the SYD international J lounge last week with some guests and was surprised how jam packed it was while also being a total mess all round.

I don't mean to be too critical... but look at it his way... YOU turned up with guests.... and given YOUR entitlement to do so, presumably many others had done so too.....so..... arrive in a group..and complain its packed? Hmmm....

Re: SYD J Lounge

Probably something to do with the fact that the staff in SIN/HK cost 20% of what they do in Australia

HK probably 50% less SIN maybe 30-40% less, rent is likely a far bigger factor than labour

Re: SYD J Lounge

Same deal as SIN / HKG, they put all their effort into making one fantastic lounge rather than split the effort with F getting the lions share.
In SIN, HKG and BKK they could have easily split the costs with BA and had nice business lounge and nice First lounge. But they had a falling out with BA.

Re: SYD J International Lounge [- not good]

If the ice cream in the J lounge better than the F ?

I popped into the J the other month... the ice cream looked more yum!

Re: SYD J International Lounge [- not good]

I haven't tried the ice cream in the F Lounge but I did enjoy some ice cream at the SYD international J lounge last year.

Re: SYD J International Lounge [- not good]

Interesting thread. I will try SYD QF International J early next year on my flight to HKG (CX138). I wonder if at that time, there would be fewer people in the lounge. I always hate crowded lounges where I cannot find a place to sit down.

Re: SYD J International Lounge [- not good]

The A380 flights would have gone earlier in the day so hopefully it could be a little quieter at that time of day.

Re: SYD J International Lounge [- not good]

Flying out of SYD international next month on a QF J ticket. I have no status with QF can I use either the QF or EK lounge in SYD?

Cheers

OT to this but I agree. The BA SIN lounge complex is quieter and has French wine, my personal preference. I never visit QF in HKG because CX Pier F is 50 times better than QF.

QFi J lounge, yes, by the mere fact you have a seat on a QF aircraft in J, you would have access.
I have done both of them, the QFi J lounge and the EK combo J and F lounge in SYD, because I was flying to NZ on a QF flight number, but EK metal flight.
In your case though, am not sure about accessing the EK lounge if only flying QF.

Re: SYD J Lounge

If QANTAS gets their way and flights to NZ leave the Domestic terminal that could also help. With less short international flights using the lounges they might feel they can justify providing a better lounge as those visiting are paying more for their flights.

To Qantas and for most airlines its not about the amount you paid for your ticket its about the yield (profit margin), arguably someone paying $900 for one way J MEL-AKL is more profitable then someone paying $1700~ MEL-SIN one-way J. MEL-SIN uses a lot more fuel, has Aust based crew $$, extra catering requirements.etc. MEL-AKL shorter uses less fuel for a 737, has NZ based crew and aircraft less $$, etc.
All I am trying to say is don't discount a flight because it is 'short' that means nothing in terms of justifying lounge size etc. :) I think you will find our friends across the ditch are just as if not more valuable to QF then some mainland flights
