Upgrade from J to F is not worth it for me as I need all the points I can generate.
J is the sweet spot. YMMV

OK, so now my next question.
It looks like I can request an upgrade from DFW-SYD. I have paid for J, but for 50k QF points (I have 80k) I can request an upgrade to F. Is it worth it? I will earn roughly 37k points with this return trip which would leave about 120k points if I don't upgrade.
Sorry, I tend to refer too the whole length of the Geelong-Melbourne road as the 'West Gate' which is wrong, but it's an annoying habit that we west of Werribee tend to do.I'd get off the M1 at Laverton and get on to the Ring Road. Stay off the WestGate.
I would, the bed in F is much more comfortable than J, so unless you see a good use for points after you come back, seize the day and spend the pointsOK, so now my next question.

Agree. Huge difference in hard product between J and F on QF. I find the J bed not very comfortable while their F bed is one of the best in the air.
For such a long flight I would try to upgrade.
It is really good value. Also you will possibly find it easier to get an upgrade from DFW. Upgrades are given out in status order, so you will be quite far down, but I think DFW is less popular.Considering using points + pay with the orginal booking was only going to save me around $500 using 80,000 points, I'd say the upgrade using 50,000 points would be a no brainer? The fare difference alone is about $3500.

That's right. We are all different. Luckily I have saved most of my points and have not wasted them on upgrades. A very busy couple of years coming up and time to use those points with the lower fuel surcharges.Upgrade from J to F is not worth it for me as I need all the points I can generate.

If it's the supper service don't count on getting much to eat onboard - typically it is a small plate only, no entree, no salad, no dessert. Obviously they expect you to have eaten dinner in the lounge beforehand. At the moment I will stick with J for the return flight, but that could change.
I'm flying in to DFW on the day of departure from SAT at 10.30am and then have all day to spare for a 10pm departure to SYD. I'll most likely eat onboard and then sleep much of the way anyway.

This is indeed the case, although I am not sure what the DFW evening catering is like these days in tge lounge QF contracts. If it's the supper service don't count on getting much to eat onboard - typically it is a small plate only, no entree, no salad, no dessert. We were there in May last year. I am a bit hazy as to what bit was the J lounge and what bit was F - we went through into a lounge and then there was a glass door that said F and that is where our friends were, so we sat there. In the main part of the lounge (the bit where I am unsure if it is also F, or whether that bit is J), there was a self service buffet, with a selection of hot food and salads. Enough to make a decent meal if you wanted to eat before boarding. We didn't eat anything, but had a 3 course meal on board the plane (this was in F).This is indeed the case, although I am not sure what the DFW evening catering is like these days in tge lounge QF contracts.

Another quick question. Do I check in at MEL at the domestic counters?
Thank you.Yes you do.
Thank you.
