20 Nov 2024 SYD airport media --> Sydney Airport announces major overhaul for T2 Domestic
T2 used by Jetstar, Virgin, REX.
  • Sydney Airport reveals ambitious plans to modernise T2 Domestic terminal, the first major upgrade in more than 30 years
  • $200 million investment will enhance passenger experience with streamlined check-in, faster security, and updated facilities
  • New layout, more bag drop technology, and next-gen security technology to speed up departures and improve efficiency
  • Once complete, it is anticipated that 95 per cent of passengers will travel from the kerbside to airside in less than 15 minutes
Sydney Airport has unveiled its design vision for the much-anticipated overhaul of the T2 Domestic terminal, the first major redevelopment in more than three decades at Australia’s busiest domestic terminal.

The $200 million investment aims to provide a faster, smoother, and more efficient travel experience for the 17 million passengers that use T2 every year, focusing on next-generation technology, modern facilities, and greater operational efficiency. Once complete, it is anticipated that 95 per cent of passengers will travel from the kerbside to airside in less than 15 minutes.

The new layout will introduce more self-service kiosks and new bag drop technology, allowing passengers to take control of their check-in process and speed up departures. With the airport currently processing 1,500 bags per hour at peak times, this upgrade will boost capacity to 1,800 bags per hour by 2026, further enhancing efficiency.

Looooooooooong overdue. It basically needs a compete bulldoze rebuild.
Check-in needs a bulldoze, and maybe a direct path to the Virgin pier.. but the food court offerings are well above T3.

Hopefully the special downstairs security doesn't get enhanced. Always useful hand luggage only.

What. A. Dump.
The Budget terminal at Sydney is one of my least favourite terminals….
Start with a bulldozer is my vote.
The entire airport does
Keeping the place open and operating is the issue. If could be 100% closed for X months would be quicker and cheaper.
Having worked in construction design and management for decades $200M does not get much. The hidden, to the public, services of plumbing, electrical, airline IT, security, fire suppression, conveyors, etc are decades old and will be patchwork of upgrades/repairs to keep it going. Far more of those today compared to what Sir Reg Ansett put in.

I saw it covered in Ch7 news last night. Looks like it’s only the main checkin concourse? Too much to redo the piers?

Alas, still no plans to connect T2 & T3 airside….

I would have thought QF would be against that anyway

I don't expect airside, but hopefully they can do something proper in the bulldozed carpark in between.

Agreed - I go there by default nowadays. It's always quick and easy through the secret line, and the staff and passengers on that side both seem to know what they're doing far more than the proles and rent-a-cops that cause all of the problems upstairs.

Is there a real need to connect T2 and T3? Didn't they once run a bus between the two, or am I imagining the civilised world?

Erm, there already is a connection between Terminals 2 & 3 landside.

You just walk along the tunnel that takes you to the station. Pretty easy, covered, and the best option given the circumstances. Not sure what else could be done.

It's a tedious entry/exit on the Qantas side, yes, but it's far better than trekking through the carpark.

Yep.. currently a trek around, or under, the construction zone.

Still don't think they've announced any firm plans for P1. This was the last announcement I could find

I'm fully aware and use it extensively myself, but it is hardly ideal nor seamless. The space in between can be turned into something a lot more streamlined and useable rather than having to use the station connection.

Not if they could expand and use the space in front of the heritage terminal. The air space above would make for a great QP/J Lounge. Although the JQ riffraff would be there en masse…😂

I do think they can probably build and renovate something with the heritage building to connect the two (and possible add some more gates if needed). Although it'd be awkward to serve as QF lounge space given the distance away from the rest of their flights.

Perhaps maybe AMEX or Priority Pass?
