Tale of 2 brekkies [or Qantas "Cafe" Breakfast Sucks!]

As I have posted in this and other threads, i've personally given feedback to QF on this (via their website and RedRoo) so the message has certainly been given.

Whilst accepting it takes time to change, it seems this one is not going to be resolved any time soon.

If they do take on the advice of members to improve the food/decor/carpets etc.... then it is inevitable that we will also be seeing the "Qantas increase QC fees by 20%" & "Qantas raise status credits for Gold to 800!" threads appearing 3 months later.

Maybe I'm slow today but I fail to see any real relationship.

As posted a few months ago Mr jojen & I experienced both J & Y+ breakfast on HKG - SYD flights . The breakfast served in Y+ was far superior to what we had experienced a few weeks previously in J. I cannot understand that a passenger in J is served less than in Y+.

Like others we have complained in surveys and by email to Qantas, but wonder how long it will take to rectify.

Not many companies with-hold the cost of improving the service from the customer.

I've had the J experience from SIN-SYD (QF6) and then a couple of weeks later on the same flight I've had the Y experience... can you guess which was better in terms of breakfast!? Even in Y, they sometimes (granted, not always) have a hot breakfast with eggs, sausage, bacon, tomato, etc. If not, then it's certainly no worse than J - the same kind of pastry + juice thing, just it's on a red plastic tray, instead of a proper plate. J was ever so marginally better on my HKG-SYD J flight last week, in that I got a pastry with something inside it - ham and cheese. On the SIN-SYD flight in J, I seem to recall it just being a raisin pastry swirl or something of that kind. Very sad for J on a full service carrier.

Just while I think of it - why do we call this 'snack' / 'excuse for a meal' the "cafe breakfast"? If I went to my local cafe, a cafe breakfast would be a decent plate of bacon, sausages, eggs, sourdough toast, mushrooms, hash browns, beans, tomatoes... you name it! THAT kind of 'cafe breakfast' I would be ecstatic with! :)

Cheers.

Red Roo,

Please also note that the "small plates" issue is intricately related to the "cafe breakfast" issue.

Whilst the thoughts of members in this thread are clear - I do not trust QF management to associate the two matters unless made explicit.

Personally it wouldn't surprise me if the two matters were decided and managed by opposite ends of the company ;)

I think Anna's post sums up the thoughts of why the service was changed (longer sleep break) but this has been implemented poorly.

We know QF's spin on why they implemented it.

The issue though is the lack of CHOICE! J pax should be able to CHOOSE between a proper breakfast/less sleep and a coughpy breakfast/more sleep.

Highly likely... and the hotel room-service order card they were using should have been be able to address that so easily... just add another box for "No thanks, I plan to be sleeping... keep it down, please" ;)

Have any J pax on these medium haul flights been able to request a Y breakfast?

To share an experience from a competitor ..... SQ has a similar style breakfast on their early evening departures from SIN, and a single meal only on their late departures. So essentially on those flights departing around 9pm you get a full 3 course meal and in the morning (if you want) a pastry, some fruit and OJ/coffee/tea. It is a very basic breakfast, but when my body clock thinks it's 3am, I usually pass on the breakfast anyway. The midnight departures are a choice of either supper or a full breakfast - one meal only, and there is only really one "traditional" main meal option in the menu, although you can book the cook if you want a choice of dinners (for supper). Many, including me, skip both meals in favour of sleep and these flights are much quieter due to the limited meal service, later departure, and absence of European originating passengers (which connect to the 9pm flights) - whose body clocks think it still the afternoon.

I really don't see a huge issue with a lighter breakfast on QF's SIN originating flights, although I can see that on the longer flights (eg ex-HKG) it is probably more important. Personally I think the name "cafe" breakfast is a bit of a @*&#*&. When I have breakfast in a cafe it is usually a substantial cooked breakfast, such as eggs benedict + sides, whilst at home I just have simple cereal/toast.

Thanks Red Roo.

Any chance of them acting on all this feedback? ;-)

Thank you RED ROO. Hopefully management will take notice and J passengers will be able to have a decent breakfast very soon !!!!

I worked out how to enjoy the Cafe Breakfast on QF98 this morning..... informed the FA last night that I didn't want breakfast and I had an extra 40 minutes of sleep. It tasted wonderful :)!!

not sure if it was raised on this thread or not but I can confirm the QF128 has a full continental breakfast in First class.

This tiny portion of cold Japanese style rice wrapping or some fresh fruits was all I got for breakfast on QF22 (J).

After some 9 hrs in the air, arriving at 8am, it appears QF expects you to BYO when it comes to breakfast.

Never mind only 1-2 pax ordered dinner anyway (I did not).

Quite disappointing !

It was a paid ticket - ouch !
