The wife and I have some flights booked to Tas on Virgin from the 17th July (before the world got into this situation) and were really hoping for some hiking. We had hope that the 2 week quarantine would be over by then but it seems that Tas' stage 3 that is estimated for the 13th July still has the quarantine in place.

What do you think the chances are of Tas lifting those by 17th July? Should we basically forget about it and ask for our travel credits/refunds or is there still hope?

I was looking up the same thing yesterday because we're suppose to go to Tassie in August. At this stage Im not booking hotel or car hire.

Good luck

Unfortunately unless the High court rules border closures illegal before then the Tassie premier has no intention to open the border before then.

Stage Three commences 13th of July, subject to Public Health advice:

  • Gatherings: 50 – 100 (indoor/outdoor) with the maximum allowable number to be determined by Public Health;
  • Aged care homes will be allowed 5 visitors and multiple visits;
  • Border controls will remain in place;
  • Consider opening bars, night clubs and casinos/gaming;
  • Markets to open, subject to Public Health advice;
  • Food courts and food vans at markets open;
  • Spas and bathhouses reopen;
  • Day trips and camping for school groups allowed;
  • Outdoor community sport^ to resume, with numbers to be guided by Public Health; and
  • Indoor sport and recreation^, including pools with numbers to be guided by Public Health.

Tas Stage 2 restrictions got lifted 2 weeks early, so there is hope that Stage 3 will also come forward, but as you observe, quarantine is still scheduled to be in place. The Tas Premier has invoked some of the most conservative de-lockdown policies of any state, so I can't offer much hope that the quarantine requirement will be lifted, sorry.

Will be interesting to see what they do when they do after opening the border. Launch a "Come visit Tasmania!" tourism blitz on the mainland? I think the response will be "Tasmania? Where's that?".

I have travel (flights and accommodation) booked to SA early July but don’t expect to be going as 2 weeks of quarantine on return To Tas is not very realistic

Of course, we might be off direct to NZ before anywhere else in Oz, but that won't help the OP or drron ...

I do have a trip to NZ booked in July, but via Sydney :(

NZ have been clear that they won't open until domestic AU borders are open.

I would like to see my parents who live in Northern Tasmania, and have lost one set of flights already (more VA travel bank) and have another set in August which I would like to use. Of course even if the border is open I may need to book another ticket if VA don't restart Launceston.

QF are going from 2 to 3 flights a week into LST.If the High Court doesn't declare the border closures illegal they could well be still closed in August as the Premier has stated Border closure will not be reviewed in mid July.

I have a trip to Tassie at the back end of October with VA. I am relatively confident I will be able to go, a lot less confident about it being aboard a VA aircraft though.

From the sound of NZ side it seems unless we fully open up our internal borders again they are not going to reopen their borders to us.

So I think your NZ trip may look a bit unlikely at this stage. :(

Regardless - there is a chance VA may not return to flying to Tasmania (perhaps just HBA) if they exit administration - so you could be in for the same treatment even if border restrictions are lifted.

That's interesting, other states are tipped to reveal something on Friday....

I live in tassie, i can tell you that the premier has made it extremely clear he doesn’t care about tourism. He wants to build buildings. Tourism is not a factor like a number of other markets. Unfortunately I wouldn’t be planning anything. He’s also stated that he will be the last one in the entire country to lift borders. Unless its proven to be illegal, I wouldn’t count on anything.

You mean the internal borders maybe lifted after the national cabinet meeting this Friday?

I can't see the Premiers agreeing on a uniform policy on Friday. :rolleyes: The Feds have been saying 'do it' for weeks now. The Premiers will do their own thing. I think Tas & NZ will be an item before Tas & Vic.

"The Prime Minister of New Zealand and the Premier of Tasmania are pleased to announce that a limited direct service will begin between Hobart and Auckland, sanctioned by the Australian Federal Minister for Transport. This will be the first open international flights for both countries after the virus lock-down "

Yeah, Qantas would have absolutely no interest in being involved in that, because, you know, all their planes are occupied at the moment and they hate any publicity. :rolleyes: I guess Air New Zealand wouldn't bother either. :rolleyes:
